Samir Bodas, the co-founder who led Icertis as CEO for more than 15 years, died following cancer in January 2026 at age 61, according to the company and GeekWire. His influence on Icertis’s culture is clearest not in its values statement alone, but in stories about choices he made: he favored team recognition over an individual award, encouraged joy at work, and during the pandemic put self-care and family ahead of business.
From Pune to Icertis
Icertis says Bodas was born in Pune, India, and moved to the United States in 1982 to study at the University of Texas at Austin. He started his career as a software programmer at National Instruments, earned an MBA at Wharton, and joined Microsoft in 1992, holding sales and marketing roles. He later pursued entrepreneurship at iMandi, Jamcracker, Disha Technology, and Aztecsoft.
In 2009, Bodas met Monish Darda, and the two launched Icertis. The company built its business around contract intelligence: making contract information more useful across an organization. Icertis describes the founders’ aim as creating a consequential company grounded in values. GeekWire’s reporting adds a business rationale for Bodas’s focus on contracts: he viewed them as strategic assets that could help companies save money, move faster, and manage risk.
What were Icertis’s FORTE values?
Icertis names its values FORTE: Fairness, Openness, Respect, Teamwork, and Execution. The company says Bodas and Darda wanted to build an enduring, consequential business on a values-based foundation. The distinction matters: FORTE is the company’s own framework, while the examples below are reported recollections of how Bodas tried to put priorities into practice.

How Bodas’s leadership reflected those values
He came to see culture as more than compensation
At a 2019 TiE Seattle event, Bodas acknowledged that he had once dismissed workplace culture. “When I came out of business school, I thought culture was all BS,” he said. He described his earlier belief that paying people enough would make them accept workplace hardship, then rejected it: “That’s absolutely wrong.” The shift suggests culture was a learned leadership conviction, rather than a slogan he claimed to have held from the start.
He favored team recognition
GeekWire reported that in 2021 Bodas asked to withdraw from a CEO of the Year finalist category because Icertis preferred recognition for the team over an individual award. The episode illustrates teamwork as a choice about who receives credit, not just a word in the company’s framework.
He made room for joy at work
Colleagues recalled Bodas emphasizing laughter and joy in the workplace. Those recollections add a human dimension to the company’s stated values: an organization’s culture is shaped by the everyday experience of working together, as well as by its formal principles.
He put people before business during the pandemic
During the early COVID-19 period, Bodas introduced the Four Rings of Responsibility, in this order: self-care, family, community, and business. GeekWire reported that he likened the principle to putting on one’s own oxygen mask before helping others. It was a practical way to communicate priorities during a crisis, and a clear example of business not being treated as the first obligation in every circumstance.

His view of contracts and Icertis’s growth
Icertis framed its mission around treating contracts as sources of clarity, trust, and value. GeekWire described Bodas as seeing contracts not as static legal documents but as strategic business assets. That framing connects the company’s product to its wider purpose: bringing useful information and accountability into business relationships.
In August 2025, after more than 15 years as CEO, Bodas became Executive Chairman, and Anand Subbaraman was appointed CEO. At the time, Icertis said it was approaching $350 million in annual recurring revenue and that more than one third of the Fortune 100 used its platform. Those are dated figures reported by the company in its leadership announcement, not independently verified current measurements.

How colleagues remembered him
In an email to GeekWire, Microsoft CEO and longtime friend Satya Nadella described Bodas as “level-headed” and entrepreneurial, adding that he took risks. Subbaraman, in Icertis’s announcement of Bodas’s death, called him “a pioneer in every sense of the word” and said his leadership set the bar for the company. Darda said Bodas challenged colleagues to think bigger, act with integrity, and build an enduring company.
Bodas died following cancer in January 2026. GeekWire reported that he was 61; the available company announcement and report do not establish exact birth or death dates.
