Where the $71,000 figure comes from
Seattle beat New England 29–13 in Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, giving the Seahawks their second championship, according to the Associated Press.
The reported $71,000 difference is arithmetic: a California tax estimate of about $249,000 minus a $178,000 NFL bonus paid to each player on the winning team. Sporting News used that comparison in coverage of the claim. The calculation does not establish that Darnold’s overall Super Bowl-related income, or his finances as a whole, were negative. How the California tax estimate was framed
California’s so-called “jock tax” applies to income nonresident athletes earn for work performed in the state. In the simplified duty-day approach described by CFO.com, the state-source share is calculated by dividing an athlete’s California workdays by total workdays, then applying that share to compensation. The outlet says Darnold had eight California duty days out of roughly 160 for the season, estimates that about $1.875 million of annual compensation was attributable to California, and applies a 13.3% top rate to arrive at a tax bill of approximately $249,000. These are CFO.com’s estimates, not a verified assessment or independently confirmed calculation.

Published accounts do not agree on the duty-day count: Sporting News quotes former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason describing seven California days, while CFO.com and Deseret News report about eight. Because the count feeds into the apportionment calculation, the difference matters when interpreting the estimate; it does not, by itself, establish which figure California used in any final assessment. What the one-bonus comparison leaves out
CFO.com reports that Darnold’s Seahawks contract included a separate $2.5 million Super Bowl victory incentive. It also reports $4 million in performance and playoff bonuses earned during the postseason. The $4 million is broader postseason compensation, not all a bonus for winning the Super Bowl. The outlet says the contract incentive plus the NFL’s $178,000 winner bonus totaled about $2.678 million in championship-related income before the estimated California tax.

Those compensation figures are reported by CFO.com and have not been independently confirmed against the contract or payment records. They still show why comparing the estimated tax bill only with the league bonus gives an incomplete picture. (CFO.com)
