What happened

The alleged firebombing
The Justice Department alleges that Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, 20, of Spring, Texas, traveled to San Francisco and threw an incendiary device at Altman’s home. The device allegedly ignited an exterior gate. That description does not support claims that the entire house burned, was destroyed, or sustained major structural damage.
Authorities also allege that Moreno-Gama went to OpenAI’s headquarters afterward, threatened to burn the building and kill people inside, and attempted to damage or enter the office. Federal charges announced April 13 included attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm. A criminal complaint is an accusation, not a conviction.

The Justice Department said investigators recovered alleged incendiary materials, including kerosene and a lighter, and an alleged document opposing artificial intelligence and advocating violence against AI executives, board members and investors. Prosecutors said they would examine whether the conduct was intended to influence government policy or coerce officials, a question relevant to any domestic-terrorism characterization. That does not establish that the incident legally constitutes terrorism.
The later possible-shooting investigation
According to SFPD’s official release, officers responded at approximately 2:56 a.m. on April 12 after a report of possible shots fired. Police identified a vehicle with two occupants near the relevant location and later detained them at a residence on the 2000 block of Taylor Street.

Tom, 25, of San Francisco, was booked for negligent discharge under California Penal Code §246.3, according to SFPD.
Muhamad Tarik Hussein
Hussein, 23, was arrested with Tom and booked for the same alleged offense, according to SFPD.

SFPD’s account describes possible gunfire and negligent-discharge bookings. It does not, in the cited material, establish that bullets struck Altman’s home, that either suspect intentionally targeted him, or that the pair knew Moreno-Gama.
Are the two cases connected?
Not on the evidence publicly identified in the cited Justice Department and SFPD materials. The events occurred two days apart near the same residence, but proximity alone does not prove coordination. The three arrests should therefore be described as arising from two incidents, not as three members of a confirmed conspiracy.

Was Altman at home?
The available Justice Department release does not establish whether Altman was present when the alleged incendiary device was thrown. Reports said no injuries were reported. There is also no verified basis to state that his spouse or other family members were inside. The exact address and private security details should not be published.

The alleged anti-AI document is part of the federal allegations against Moreno-Gama specifically. It should not automatically be treated as the motive for Tom or Hussein, whose arrests arose from the separate April 12 investigation. Altman later called for de-escalation in rhetoric and tactics surrounding AI, according to The Guardian; that public reaction is separate from police findings and court allegations.

Legal status and what remains unproven
