Salesforce rolls out new Slackbot AI agent as it battles Microsoft and Google in workplace AI

Salesforce’s new Slackbot brings AI search, summaries, drafting and connected workflows into Slack. Here is what it can do, who gets access, what it costs and whether it can compete with Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini.

Salesforce’s rebuilt Slackbot is more than the reminder and notification bot many users remember. Announced on January 13, 2026, it is designed as an AI workplace assistant inside Slack that can search conversations and connected business data, summarize information, draft content and, where integrations support it, help initiate actions.

For buyers, the practical verdict is straightforward: Slackbot is most compelling for organizations already centered on Slack and Salesforce. It is not automatically a better alternative to Microsoft 365 Copilot or Google Gemini for Workspace, and its real value depends on plan eligibility, connected-system permissions, governance and how many actions it can reliably perform rather than merely describe.

What changed with Slackbot?

The original Slackbot was primarily a lightweight utility for reminders, notifications and simple assistance. Salesforce has kept the name but substantially changed the product’s ambition and architecture.

The new Slackbot is described as an LLM-powered workplace assistant that combines language-model responses with enterprise search and connections to business applications. It can use relevant Slack conversations, files and workplace information to answer questions, synthesize context and help users create or update content.

Salesforce’s broader strategy is to make Slack the conversational interface for its Agentforce 360 vision: an employee asks for an outcome in Slack, and the system searches data, invokes connected tools or agents and returns a result. That makes Slackbot part of a larger platform strategy, not simply another standalone chatbot.

What Slackbot can do

Reported and announced capabilities fall into several distinct levels. They should not all be treated as equally “agentic.”

1. Search and retrieval

  • Search Slack messages, channels and workplace information.
  • Find relevant organizational context across connected sources.
  • Search information in systems such as Salesforce and Google Drive where the appropriate connector and permissions are available.
  • Identify relevant Salesforce accounts, opportunities or customer information.

This is the foundation of the product. Slackbot’s usefulness depends heavily on whether important company knowledge is actually in Slack or in systems that have been safely connected to it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Summarization and analysis

  • Summarize conversations and documents.
  • Answer questions using organizational context.
  • Analyze text and uploaded visual information.
  • Prepare meeting or account-related context.

These functions can reduce time spent searching, but Slack is also full of informal, contradictory and outdated discussion. A summary of a channel is not necessarily a summary of approved company policy.

3. Drafting and creation

  • Draft documents, summaries and responses.
  • Create or update material in Slack Canvas.
  • Help turn scattered discussion into a more structured work product.

Drafting is generally lower risk than allowing an AI system to send an external message or change a customer record. Users should review generated content before treating it as final.

4. Calendar and workflow assistance

Launch reporting said Slackbot could read calendars and check availability. Actually booking meetings was expected after the initial release rather than being available on launch day.

Slackbot can also support workflows and actions through connected applications and agents. However, an integration that supports search may not support write actions, and an action available in one organization may require a specific connector, plan or administrator configuration in another.

Image generation was not supported at launch, so Slackbot should not be described as a general-purpose visual creation tool without checking the latest product documentation.

Is Slackbot really an AI agent?

“Agent” is useful only if it describes behavior, not just marketing language. A practical agent should be able to:

  1. Interpret a goal.
  2. Retrieve relevant information.
  3. Select an appropriate tool or connected system.
  4. Take an action where authorized.
  5. Explain what it did and what it found.
  6. Respect permissions and approval boundaries.
  7. Handle ambiguity or report failure instead of inventing a result.

Slackbot clearly goes beyond a basic question-and-answer bot through enterprise search, Canvas generation, connected data and tool calls. But the safest current description is that it is a context-aware enterprise assistant with agentic capabilities, rather than proof that Slack has already solved autonomous, multi-agent work across every business system.

For a buyer, the important distinction is between:

  • Retrieval: finding information.
  • Synthesis: combining information into an answer.
  • Drafting: producing content for human review.
  • Recommendation: suggesting a next step.
  • Workflow execution: carrying out an approved process.
  • Irreversible action: sending, changing, approving or booking something outside Slack.

A product demo can make these categories appear similar even though their risk and operational value are very different.

Which AI model powers Slackbot?

At launch, Slackbot was reported to use Anthropic’s Claude. Slack CTO Parker Harris also discussed supporting additional model providers, including Google Gemini, with OpenAI mentioned as a possibility. Those statements describe provider plans and direction; they should not be treated as a guarantee that every model is currently available to every customer.

The underlying model is only one part of an enterprise AI assistant. Retrieval quality, permissions, indexing, action controls, auditability, latency, data residency and administrative policy may matter more than the model’s brand.

A Claude-powered Slack feature is also not the same thing as Google Gemini for Workspace. A model provider supplies part of the technology; the complete product determines which data can be searched, which applications can be controlled and how the user experience works.

What happens to customer data?

Slack says it does not train generative AI models on customer data. That statement should be read narrowly and accurately. It does not mean customer data is never processed, that it remains entirely inside a customer-controlled environment or that connected third-party systems create no additional risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organizations should separately review:

  • Which data sources are connected.
  • Where data is processed and stored.
  • How long prompts, outputs and activity records are retained.
  • Which third parties process information.
  • Whether the organization’s data-processing and residency requirements are met.
  • How administrators can audit or restrict usage.

Slack’s policy position is relevant, but it is not a substitute for a security and procurement review.

How permissions-aware access is supposed to work

Salesforce and Slack position Slackbot as using information that a particular employee is already authorized to view. That is essential: Slackbot should not be treated as having unrestricted access to every corporate system.

In practice, the answer a user receives can depend on:

  • The connector’s configuration.
  • Whether the source has been indexed or enabled for the organization.
  • Retention and sharing settings in the source system.

Permission inheritance is not the same as complete data governance. If an employee already has overly broad access, an AI assistant may make that information easier to discover. A misconfigured connector or source entitlement can also create exposure for an authorized user who should not have access to a particular business context.

Before deployment, administrators should test sensitive channels, confidential customer records, executive information, deleted material and cross-department access. They should also define when human approval is required before Slackbot takes an external action.

Who gets Slackbot?

The January 2026 launch targeted Business+ and Enterprise+ customers through a phased rollout across January and February. Salesforce said enterprise owners and administrators could configure or restrict access during the rollout.

That launch rule should not be confused with the current access picture. Slack’s pricing page, as observed in August 2026, lists Slackbot across its plan comparison and describes limited trial access for Free and Pro users, while Business+ and Enterprise+ retain ongoing access. Availability can still vary by plan, region, workspace configuration and rollout status, so buyers should verify the entitlement in their own Slack account or contract.

How much does Slackbot cost?

There was no separate Slackbot fee reported for eligible Business+ and Enterprise+ customers at launch. “Included,” however, does not mean that the overall deployment is free.

Plan Listed price Slackbot signal
Free $0 Limited trial access described on Slack’s current pricing page
Pro $7.25 per user/month annually, or $8.75 monthly Limited trial access described on Slack’s current pricing page
Business+ $15 per user/month annually, or $18 monthly Ongoing Slackbot access
Enterprise+ Contact sales Ongoing Slackbot access and enterprise search

Prices and entitlements can change. The figures above reflect the Slack pricing signals supplied for August 18, 2026, not a guarantee of a future quote.

Businesses should calculate the full cost of:

  • Upgrading to a qualifying Slack plan.
  • Salesforce CRM licenses.
  • Agentforce products or usage.
  • Enterprise connectors and application subscriptions.
  • Identity, security and governance work.
  • Implementation, training and ongoing administration.

Slack’s 2025 packaging changes raised Business+ from $12.50 to $15 per user per month when billed annually and introduced Enterprise+. That broader pricing change should not be confused with a separate Slackbot surcharge.

Slackbot versus Microsoft 365 Copilot

The most useful comparison is not which assistant produces the most impressive generic answer. It is where the organization’s work and authoritative data already live.

Question Slackbot Microsoft 365 Copilot
Primary work surface Slack conversations, channels, files and connected applications Microsoft 365, Teams, Outlook, SharePoint and related services
Best ecosystem fit Slack- and Salesforce-centered organizations Organizations standardized on Microsoft identity and productivity tools
Main advantage Context from ongoing Slack conversations and connected enterprise data Native access to Microsoft documents, email, meetings and collaboration workflows
Key buyer question Can Slack safely reach the systems employees need? Is Microsoft 365 already the organization’s authoritative work layer?

Slackbot may be more attractive where decisions and collaboration already happen in Slack. Microsoft may be more attractive where email, documents, meetings, identity and collaboration are deeply embedded in Microsoft 365. Neither is universally superior.

A company should not choose Slackbot merely because it has an appealing agent demo if employees still conduct most work in Outlook, SharePoint and Teams. Moving collaboration systems to access an AI feature can cost more than the feature saves.

Slackbot versus Google Gemini for Workspace

Google’s strongest position is likely with organizations built around Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Meet and the wider Workspace environment. Slackbot instead starts with Slack conversation history and connected business workflows.

Salesforce’s discussion of potentially supporting Gemini as a model provider does not make Slackbot equivalent to Gemini for Workspace. A Gemini-powered feature inside Slack would still have a different data model, administration layer and user experience from Google’s native productivity assistant.

For Google Workspace customers, the central questions are whether Slack contains important operational context, whether the necessary connectors are available and whether adding Slackbot duplicates capabilities already included in the organization’s existing suite.

The strategic contest is about the workplace interface

Microsoft wants Copilot to sit across Microsoft 365 and Teams. Google wants Gemini to sit across Workspace. Salesforce wants Slack to become the conversational front door to CRM data, workplace conversations and a network of internal and third-party agents.

That makes this less a contest between three identical chatbots and more a contest over where employees ask questions, where context is assembled and where business actions begin.

The strategy benefits Salesforce in two ways. It makes Slack more valuable to existing customers, and it gives Salesforce a route to put CRM and Agentforce workflows in front of employees who may not work directly in Salesforce every day. The trade-off is greater platform dependence: the more business context and actions flow through Slack, Salesforce and their connectors, the more important portability and contract boundaries become.

Security and governance checklist

Organizations considering Slackbot should treat deployment as a data-access project, not just a software switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Map authoritative sources. Identify whether the answer should come from Slack, Salesforce, a document system, a CRM record or another controlled source.
  2. Review permissions. Test whether Slackbot returns only information the user can legitimately access in each connected system.
  3. Audit connectors. Confirm whether each connector supports search, reading, writing or external actions.
  4. Protect sensitive channels. Test legal, finance, human-resources, executive and customer-confidential information.
  5. Set approval rules. Require confirmation for external messages, CRM changes, bookings, approvals and other consequential actions.
  6. Check retention and deletion. Understand how source data, prompts, outputs and activity logs are handled.
  7. Define auditability. Determine whether security teams can review searches, tool calls, outputs and actions.
  8. Require source verification. For important answers, users should be able to inspect the underlying messages or records.
  9. Pilot with real permissions. A demonstration workspace with clean data will not reveal production access problems.
  10. Measure outcomes. Track retrieval time, answer accuracy, correction rates and completed workflows rather than relying only on usage statistics.

Common failure modes

Hallucinated or outdated answers

Slack discussions can reflect abandoned plans, personal opinions or incomplete information. Users should verify important answers against current records and require citations or links where possible.

  • Recording: There is a recording jack that can be connected to recording equipment, which can work continuously and clearly for a long time.Realize two-way recording conversion.

Broad permissions mistaken for safe permissions

Slackbot can honor an employee’s existing access while still making an overly broad permission set more powerful. Governance must address the underlying access model.

Search mistaken for execution

A system that can locate a Salesforce record may not be able to update it. A connector that reads a calendar may not be able to book a meeting. Buyers should document each integration’s exact action scope.

Drafting mistaken for approval

A generated Canvas, message or account summary is still a draft until a responsible employee checks it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pricing mistaken for total cost

Slackbot may be included in a qualifying plan while the plan upgrade, CRM license, connector, implementation and governance work create substantial costs.

Who should consider Slackbot?

Strong fit

  • Slack is the organization’s primary collaboration surface.
  • Important institutional knowledge already lives in Slack.
  • The company uses Salesforce CRM or plans to connect CRM workflows to Slack.
  • Employees lose time searching channels, files and scattered business systems.
  • The organization wants AI embedded in existing conversations rather than in another separate application.
  • IT can manage identity, connector permissions and approval controls.

Potentially poor fit

  • The company is predominantly Microsoft 365 and Teams-based.
  • The company is predominantly Google Workspace-based.
  • Slack contains little authoritative information.
  • Data cannot safely be connected across systems.
  • Teams need deterministic automation rather than probabilistic answers.
  • The business cannot justify moving from Pro to Business+ or Enterprise+.
  • Security and compliance teams are not ready to review third-party connectors and retention.

How to evaluate it before buying

A controlled pilot should use real but carefully selected workflows. Good tests include:

  • Finding the latest approved answer from several Slack discussions.
  • Preparing a customer-account brief from Slack and Salesforce data.
  • Summarizing a project channel while identifying conflicting or stale information.
  • Drafting a Canvas from a set of conversations.
  • Checking calendar availability without allowing booking.
  • Attempting to access information from a restricted channel or record.
  • Testing what happens when a connector is unavailable or an instruction is ambiguous.

Measure accuracy, time saved, source visibility, permission fidelity, correction effort and action reliability. Also compare the fully loaded cost with the AI tools already available in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.

Bottom line

Slackbot is Salesforce’s attempt to turn Slack into a conversational control layer for workplace data and AI agents. It is a meaningful rebuild of the old Slackbot, with enterprise search, contextual answers, drafting, Canvas creation and connected-workflow ambitions.

Its strongest case is a Slack- and Salesforce-centered business that wants employees to search, prepare and initiate work without leaving Slack. Its weakest case is an organization whose authoritative data and daily workflows already live almost entirely in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.

The product’s long-term importance will depend less on the “agent” label than on execution: whether it can respect permissions, show trustworthy sources, support useful actions, provide approval controls and deliver measurable value without creating a new layer of licensing and governance complexity.
