Salesforce named longtime executive Denise Dresser CEO of Slack on November 13, 2023, after Lidiane Jones announced she would leave to become CEO of Bumble. Dresser took the role immediately; Jones was expected to help with the handoff through the end of 2023. The appointment was an internal promotion and a test of Salesforce’s effort to make Slack a more integral part of its enterprise platform.
What happened in November 2023?
Salesforce announced Dresser’s appointment on November 13, 2023. She succeeded Jones, who had announced the previous week that she was leaving Slack for the top job at Bumble, the publicly traded dating-app company. Dresser started immediately, while Jones planned to remain through year-end to support the transition. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report covers the announcement and handoff.
Jones’s departure was described as a move to a new CEO opportunity, not as a firing or a performance-related exit. She had taken over from Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield around the end of 2022 and held the role for about 10 months.
Who was Denise Dresser?
At the time of the appointment, Dresser had worked at Salesforce for approximately 12 years. Her most recent role was president of Accelerated Industries; previously, she was an executive vice president overseeing enterprise sales. TechCrunch reported those positions and her background at the company.

Salesforce and CEO Marc Benioff presented Dresser as a leader with experience in customer success, innovation, enterprise sales, and team building. Those are the company’s characterizations of her record, not independent performance measures. Her years inside Salesforce meant she already knew its sales organization, enterprise customers, and operating model.
Why promote an internal Salesforce executive?
The appointment offered a continuity advantage: Dresser did not need to learn Salesforce’s enterprise business from the outside. That background could help her coordinate Slack with the company’s sales teams and products. It also made her experience relevant to a central strategic question—how Salesforce could sell Slack as part of a wider enterprise platform rather than only as a standalone collaboration service.

That interpretation is not the same as a publicly announced list of targets. Salesforce did not disclose a formal integration mandate or new product roadmap as part of the leadership announcement. Dresser’s appointment made closer coordination plausible; it did not prove that Salesforce planned to absorb Slack’s identity or change its products in a particular way.
Why Slack mattered to Salesforce
Salesforce completed its acquisition of Slack on July 21, 2021. In its completion announcement, Salesforce framed Slack as part of its broader digital workplace strategy. Its acquisition FAQ described plans to connect people, customer information, applications, and workflows, and to integrate Slack across Salesforce products and Customer 360.

That made Slack more than a messaging app in Salesforce’s strategy: the company viewed it as a potential collaboration and workflow interface for customer data and business applications. The challenge for its leadership was to strengthen those connections while keeping Slack useful and recognizable to customers in its own right. Salesforce had said Slack would continue under its own brand and pursue its product mission, so deeper integration did not necessarily mean abandoning that independence.
What did the leadership turnover signal?
Dresser became Slack’s third leader in roughly a year, following Butterfield and Jones, a rapid sequence that raised questions about stability for employees, customers, partners, and investors. Bloomberg’s report described the succession and Slack’s position as a Salesforce business unit.

There was a countervailing argument: an internal Salesforce leader might be able to settle into the role more quickly and align Slack with the parent company’s enterprise strategy. That is an inference from Dresser’s background, not proof that the leadership change resolved concerns about continuity. The announcement itself established a personnel transition, not a product change, restructuring, or workforce reduction.
