SAIL’s 2024 recruitment advertised 314 Operator-cum-Technician (Trainee), or OCTT, vacancies across ten disciplines. Applications closed on 18 March 2024, so this is a past recruitment cycle—not an open application opportunity. Selection comprised a computer-based test (CBT) and a qualifying skill test for shortlisted candidates.

Can you still apply for SAIL recruitment 2024?

No. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Advertisement No. 01/2024 was dated 22 February 2024, and the online application deadline was 18 March 2024. SAIL’s careers portal later showed notices for CBT shortlisting, skill-test scheduling and call letters for the same advertisement. Check SAIL’s current careers page for newer recruitment rather than treating this notice as open.

How many OCTT vacancies were advertised?

The recruitment covered 314 posts in ten disciplines. These totals are reported by Jagran Josh for the 2024 recruitment; the advertisement itself provides vacancy tables by unit and category. The figures below are discipline totals, not unit-wise allocations.

Discipline Vacancies
Metallurgy 57
Electrical 64
Mechanical 100
Instrumentation 17
Civil 22
Chemical 18
Ceramic 6
Electronics 8
Computer/IT 20
Draughtsman 2
Total 314

The advertised posts spanned SAIL plants, units and mines, including Alloy Steels Plant, Bokaro, Bhilai, Chandrapur Ferro-Alloys, Durgapur, IISCO, Rourkela, RDCIS and SAIL Refractory Unit. Applicants could indicate preferences among units with vacancies in their discipline, but those preferences were indicative; final posting remained at management’s discretion.

What were the age and education requirements?

For the listed OCTT disciplines, the standard age range was 18–28 years as of the 18 March 2024 closing date. The advertisement provided category-based relaxations, including five years for SC/ST candidates, three years for OBC non-creamy layer candidates, specified relaxations for PwBD candidates, and an upper age limit of 45 for departmental SAIL candidates. Eligibility depended on satisfying the notice’s conditions and supplying the required category documents.

Most disciplines required matriculation and a relevant three-year full-time diploma from a government-recognized university or institute. Minimum qualifying marks were 50% for unreserved, OBC and EWS seats, and 40% for seats reserved for SC, ST, PwBD or departmental candidates. Accepted diploma branches differed by discipline; the advertisement lists related streams for Electrical, Instrumentation, Electronics and Computer/IT, so applicants needed to check the specific discipline entry rather than assume any technical diploma qualified. Distance, correspondence and off-campus qualifications were not eligible.

Additional requirement for Draughtsman

Draughtsman applicants needed a three-year full-time diploma in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or Architectural Assistantship, plus one year of experience as a Draughtsman or Design Assistant preparing drawings using AutoCAD in an industrial or commercial establishment.

What was the SAIL OCTT exam pattern?

The CBT was in Hindi or English and consisted of 100 objective questions to be answered in 90 minutes:

  • 50 questions on domain knowledge.
  • 50 questions on aptitude.

The advertisement set separate minimum qualifying percentile thresholds by discipline and category. Candidates who qualified were shortlisted for the skill test in merit order at a 1:3 ratio per post and discipline, subject to the notice’s tie-handling rules. The skill test was qualifying only; CBT marks carried 100% weight in final selection under the advertised merit and reservation rules. The notice also provided for a discipline-wise panel at a 1:1 ratio for non-joining vacancies, valid for six months from approval. Test-day requirements included a call letter or admit card, government photo ID and biometric authentication.

What were the training pay and employment terms?

Selected candidates were to undergo two years of on-the-job training, which SAIL could extend by up to a further two years according to company requirements. The 2024 advertisement listed consolidated training pay of ₹16,100 for the first year and ₹18,300 for the second, with benefits such as medical facilities and leave under company rules.

After successful completion of training, candidates would be considered for regular S-3 grade employment under the stated terms and company rules. The notice gave an S-3 pay scale of ₹26,600–3%–₹38,920 and approximate annual CTC of ₹10.4 lakh at the minimum S-3 scale, excluding location-based and category-specific allowances. These were the advertised terms for this recruitment, not a guarantee of current pay or appointment.

How did the 2024 application process work?

Applications were online only through SAIL’s website careers page or sailcareers.com. The advertisement stated, “No other means / mode of application shall be accepted.” It described the following process for the now-closed intake:
