Sagem (Safran) announced a contract with MBDA to integrate SIGMA 30 navigation and pointing systems into several VL MICA surface-to-air weapon systems for international markets. The announcement did not identify the customers or countries, contract value, delivery schedule, exact quantity, or SIGMA 30 variant.

What the MBDA contract covered

The agreement concerned SIGMA 30 integration into “several” VL MICA systems. SIGMA 30 is a navigation and pointing subsystem; it is not the VL MICA missile itself. The public announcement described the systems as intended for international markets but did not identify the end users.

IDR News Network published the announcement on March 3, 2015; a contemporaneous Deagel report is dated March 2. The safest summary is that the contract was announced March 2 or reported March 3, 2015. IDR News Network’s report reproduces the announcement, while Deagel’s report provides contemporaneous secondary coverage.

What was not disclosed

  • The customer or customers and destination countries
  • The contract’s financial value
  • Delivery dates or schedule
  • The exact number of systems beyond “several”
  • Which SIGMA 30 variant was included

Those details are not established by the cited contract reports, so the announcement cannot support a precise procurement comparison or a claim about the award’s current status.

What Sagem said SIGMA 30 was designed to do

The 2015 announcement described SIGMA 30 as based on digital large ring laser gyro technology. Sagem said it was designed to support air-defense deployment and firing without GPS, distributed launcher deployment, and nominal operation despite jamming and decoys. These are characteristics stated by the supplier, not independently verified performance results.

“Sagem designed the SIGMA 30 pointing system to give air defense systems independent deployment and firing capability in the absence of GPS.”

How SIGMA 30 variants and other uses fit the story

Safran’s June 2016 product-family announcement later described two variants with different intended applications. That information provides family context, but it does not identify the variant used in the 2015 MBDA contract.

Variant Intended applications stated by Safran in June 2016
Sigma 30-200 Short- and medium-range artillery and air-defense weapons
Sigma 30-800 Heavy artillery and long- and very-long-range radars

In that same 2016 announcement, Safran said the SIGMA 30 family was then in service in more than 40 weapon systems and programs internationally. The figure describes Safran’s statement at that time, not the number of systems covered by the MBDA award. Safran’s June 14, 2016 announcement gives the variant and portfolio context.

A separate Safran release on November 18, 2016 described an export contract for several dozen SIGMA 30 systems for mobile counter-battery radars serving an unnamed foreign army. Safran said those systems help locate enemy batteries after firing and provide autonomous engagement capability when GPS is unavailable. This was a separate contract, not additional detail about the MBDA/VL MICA agreement. Safran’s November 18, 2016 release also lists family applications including ground-survey vehicles, Caesar, 2R2M, Archer, PzH2000, Mars II, VL MICA and associated radars, and identifies its Coriolis facility in Montluçon as the system integration site.
