In November 2005, battery maker Saft announced a multi-million-pound plan for a new manufacturing facility somewhere in North East England, intended to replace or supersede its ageing South Shields operation. It was a site-search and reinvestment plan—not confirmation of a selected location, approved build, or factory opening.
What Saft announced in November 2005
Contemporary reports dated the announcement to 28–29 November 2005. Saft said it planned a state-of-the-art UK battery-manufacturing site in the North East and was working with a developer and local and regional bodies to identify a suitable location. The company described the investment as multi-million-pound, but did not specify an amount. Evertiq’s November 2005 report and Electronics Weekly’s contemporary coverage describe a proposal, not a completed project.
The stated aim was to sustain dedicated UK production of advanced battery systems for industrial and defence-related programmes. The reports did not identify a final town, industrial estate or factory site.
Why Saft was looking beyond South Shields
Saft’s UK activity was concentrated at its South Shields facility in South Tyneside. The company had acquired the site in 2001 and had already modernised it, but said the ageing building and its layout no longer suited the requirements of a high-technology battery manufacturer. Saft expected future customer needs to require substantial investment and judged a new facility preferable to simply upgrading the existing base. The contemporary account presents this as a reinvestment decision, not a response to insolvency or an announced withdrawal from UK manufacturing.

South Shields was still under consideration
The 2005 plan had two tracks: Saft was considering redevelopment of the South Shields site while also searching for a suitable new North East location with a developer and public-sector partners. That distinction matters: the announcement did not say the South Shields plant was definitively closing, nor did it establish that the company would relocate to a different town.
A purpose-built facility could offer a more suitable production layout and support changing technical requirements. Redevelopment could retain staff, technical knowledge and existing regional relationships. The company had not publicly resolved that choice in the announcement.

What the proposed facility was meant to support
Saft supplied batteries to industrial and defence customers, including the UK Ministry of Defence and major original-equipment manufacturers. Contemporary coverage describes products including industrial nickel-cadmium batteries, primary lithium batteries and specialised technologies for defence and space. Embedded.com’s report also noted that Saft had 16 other production facilities worldwide at the time.
This was not announced as an electric-vehicle lithium-ion gigafactory. The stated case was for advanced battery manufacturing serving established industrial, defence and other specialist markets, alongside future UK programmes.

What can be verified about the outcome
The available sources do not establish whether Saft selected a new site, built the proposed replacement facility, spent the stated investment or completed a relocation. A later Saft article published in 2024 refers to a purpose-built South Shields factory operated by Cell Pack Solutions and to ongoing local battery-pack activity. That confirms a later South Shields manufacturing connection, but does not show whether the 2005 proposal was completed, changed or abandoned.

Modern North East manufacturing sites, including those promoted by Invest South Tyneside and the Port of Tyne, provide current regional context only. Neither is evidence of a location Saft selected in 2005.
