The headline “Safran Helicopter Engines full-speed ahead in India” appeared in Indian Defence Review on 14 February 2017. Its description of Safran’s India strategy was rooted in cooperation with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), existing helicopter-engine programmes and plans for local maintenance. The major update since then is the Aravalli: on 26 August 2026, Safran announced that HAL and SAFHAL had signed a final contract for joint development and production of the new engine. That contract is a programme milestone, not evidence that Aravalli is already certified, in production or in service.
What changed since the 2017 article?
The 2017 headline’s “full-speed ahead” was the publication’s characterization at the time, not a current, independently measured assessment of production or delivery pace. Its market expectations and proposed industrial plans should be read as historical reporting, not as confirmed present-day outcomes.
The clearest later development is the Aravalli programme. Safran and HAL established SAFHAL as a joint venture for next-generation helicopter engines, with the Indian Multi Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval version, the Deck Based Multi Role Helicopter (DBMRH), as initial objectives. HAL selected SAFHAL in August 2024 to begin joint work on the engine. On 26 August 2026, Safran announced the final contract covering joint design, development, manufacture, supply and lifecycle support.
What is the Aravalli engine for?
Safran places Aravalli in the 3,500–4,000 shp class; shp means shaft horsepower. The intended aircraft are HAL’s 13-ton IMRH and DBMRH. Safran has also described possible future civil-market applications in offshore transportation, utility missions and VVIP transport. Those are potential markets, not confirmed customers or orders.

- This is a plastic model kit. Assembly and painting is required.
- Paint and glue is NOT included.
- Contains parts to build one of each model.
The announcements establish a final development and production contract, but do not state a delivery schedule, certification date, production quantity or entry-into-service date. It would therefore be premature to describe Aravalli as an operational engine or to infer when it will reach a fleet.
How the HAL–Safran partnership developed
Artouste: an earlier licensed-production relationship
Indian Defence Review traces the relationship to a 1962 agreement for Indian production of the Artouste IIIB for Chetak and Cheetah helicopters. The 2017 article reported that more than 600 engines had been produced in India. That figure is the article’s historical claim, not an independently audited current total.

Shakti/Ardiden 1H1: an established engine family
The 2017 report described Shakti/Ardiden 1H1 as a co-developed, 1,400-shp engine built in Bengaluru and said more than 250 were in service at the time. Safran’s current India overview identifies the Shakti/Ardiden 1H1 family as a key element of its partnership with India; Safran’s 2026 announcement says the Shakti family powers the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and Light Utility Helicopter (LUH). The older figure of more than 250 is not a current fleet count.
Safran’s India overview reports that more than 1,200 Safran helicopter engines are in service in India. This is Safran’s company-reported figure; the sources cited here do not independently audit it.

Other engines and proposals reported in 2017
The 2017 article also discussed the Ardiden 1U for the LUH and a possible Indian production partnership for the Arrius 2G1 engine intended for Ka-226T helicopters. The proposed Ka-226T manufacturing arrangement is not established by the later sources as a current or completed Safran–HAL programme, so it should be understood as a 2017 proposal rather than a present commitment.

The 2017 article said a Safran–HAL helicopter-engine MRO joint venture had been inaugurated in 2016 and was expected to support TM333 and Shakti engines. Safran’s India overview later confirms the broader presence of HAL joint ventures for helicopter-engine maintenance and repair. The available sources do not establish current operating capacity, exact throughput or the completion status of every facility described in the 2017 plans.

The 2017 article’s forecast of capacity starting at 50 engines per year and rising to 150 is a historical projection, not a verified current capacity figure. Separately, Safran announced the inauguration of a LEAP engine MRO centre in Hyderabad in November 2025. LEAP is a civil jet-engine programme, so that facility does not demonstrate helicopter-engine MRO capacity.
