A jury found for Ryanair in July 2024, but in January 2025 the judge rejected the jury’s finding that Ryanair had established more than $5,000 in qualifying loss. Ryanair’s 2026 filing says the case was ultimately settled; it does not disclose the settlement’s monetary terms or full conditions.
What happened in the case?
Ryanair DAC sued Booking Holdings entities, including Booking.com, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware. The dispute concerned automated collection of Ryanair flight and fare information and its commercial use by online travel businesses.

- July 2024: A jury found Booking.com had violated the U.S. Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), according to Ryanair’s later filing. Ryanair said the jury found unauthorized access to a protected computer and intent to defraud. That was the jury’s finding at that stage of the case.
- January 2025: The trial judge ruled that Ryanair had not established more than $5,000 in qualifying loss, rejecting the jury’s finding on that threshold. Ryanair’s 2026 filing says it appealed. The $5,000 figure was a technical damages threshold relevant to the CFAA claim, not a damages award or an estimate of consumer losses. See the court’s January 22, 2025 opinion for the ruling’s legal analysis and procedural scope.
- By 2026: Ryanair Holdings plc’s annual filing says the case was ultimately settled and that Booking Holdings companies were given access to Ryanair direct distribution and price-comparison agreements. The filing does not disclose the full settlement agreement or monetary terms, so it does not establish a damages payment or an admission of liability.
Ryanair’s filing is the source for its account of the verdict and settlement: Ryanair Holdings plc’s 2026 Form 20-F. Its earlier filing describes the appeal before the later settlement disclosure: Ryanair Holdings plc’s 2025 Form 20-F.
What does screen scraping mean in this dispute?
Ryanair uses “screen scraping” to describe third-party sites extracting flight and fare information from its website or booking system and displaying it for sale through their own sites, sometimes with intermediary fees. The company objects to what it characterizes as unauthorized commercial use, citing contractual, database-right and copyright principles. Those are Ryanair’s positions in the dispute—not a general rule that all web scraping is unlawful.

Ryanair also says resale through intermediaries can make prices less transparent and can interfere with the airline receiving authentic passenger contact and payment details. These are concerns advanced by the airline; they should not be taken as findings that every third-party seller behaves that way.
How does Ryanair’s licensed distribution model differ?
Ryanair says it permits some third parties to distribute or compare its fares through licenses and agreed access methods. Its direct distribution agreements (DDAs) are described as allowing an online travel agency (OTA) to display licensed flight and fare data, then send the customer to Ryanair to confirm the purchase. Ryanair says these agreements require transparent pricing, prohibit hidden mark-ups, provide the airline with passenger contact details, let passengers manage bookings directly, and support prompt refunds in cancellations or disruption.

The company also says certain fare-comparison sites may use schedule and fare information under license. It identifies Amadeus, Sabre, Travelport and Kyte as providers that can supply access to Ryanair fares for specified travel-agent or corporate-booking contexts. The distinction in Ryanair’s account is therefore not simply “third party” versus “airline”: licensed distribution arrangements exist alongside its objections to unauthorized scraping and resale.

| Who displays the fare and total? | OTA may display licensed Ryanair fare data; Ryanair says the DDA requires transparent pricing and prohibits hidden mark-ups. | Ryanair says scraper sites display extracted fare information and may add intermediary fees. Actual practices vary and are not established for every reseller. |
| Where is the booking completed? | Ryanair says the customer is sent to Ryanair to confirm the purchase. | Ryanair describes the tickets as being offered through the intermediary’s own site; the case materials summarized here do not establish every seller’s checkout process. |
| Who receives passenger details? | Ryanair says its DDA terms ensure it receives passenger contact details. | Ryanair raises concern that resale may prevent it from receiving authentic details; the sources do not establish every reseller’s actual handling. |
| Where are changes and disruption issues handled? | Ryanair says passengers can manage bookings directly and that the agreements support prompt refunds in cancellations or disruption. | The sources do not establish a uniform process across resellers. |
What should a traveler check before paying?
The case does not establish that all resellers handle bookings poorly. It does highlight practical details worth checking on any third-party booking page before entering payment information:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Compare the final total with the fare shown on Ryanair’s own booking flow, including any service or processing fees.
- Confirm whether the third party takes payment and completes the booking, or redirects you to Ryanair to finish it.
- Check which email address and phone number will be attached to the reservation, and whether Ryanair will receive your own contact details.
- Find out where you will manage the booking and request changes, cancellations or refunds if a flight is disrupted.
These checks address the transparency, passenger-information and booking-management issues Ryanair raised; they do not presume that every reseller has the same policies.

Ryanair’s 2026 filing establishes that the parties settled and that Booking Holdings companies received access to Ryanair direct distribution and price-comparison agreements. It does not provide the agreement itself, disclose a payment, or state that Booking.com admitted wrongdoing. The available account also does not show the precise operational terms of the access. The case is best understood as a dispute over one company’s claims about unauthorized commercial access and resale, followed by a jury verdict, a subsequent ruling on the qualifying-loss threshold, and a settlement.
