Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney did not complete their purchase of Wrexham Football Club when supporters approved the proposal in November 2020. The Wrexham Supporters Trust vote came first; regulatory approval followed on 5 February 2021, and the takeover was completed on 9 February. Contemporary accounts described the announcement video as comic, though its full script and specific gags cannot be verified from those accounts.
What happened, and when did the takeover become official?
Wrexham’s takeover unfolded in stages. In November 2020, members of the Wrexham Supporters Trust voted on the proposed transfer of control. That vote signaled members’ support; it was not the legal completion of the purchase.
| Date | Event | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| 16 November 2020 | Supporters Trust members voted on the proposal. | The Trust reported that the RR McReynolds Company, LLC would take 100% control, subject to final agreement and relevant football approvals. BBC Sport reported that 98.6% of respondents backed the proposal: 1,809 approved, 26 opposed and nine abstained. BBC Sport’s report |
| 5 February 2021 | The Financial Conduct Authority approved the proposed takeover. | This was a regulatory approval, not the completion date. BBC Sport’s completion report |
| 9 February 2021 | The purchase was completed. | Reynolds and McElhenney became the club’s new owners. BBC Sport reported an immediate £2 million investment into the club. BBC Sport’s completion report |
The 98.6% figure refers to the members who responded to the Trust ballot, not necessarily every Trust member. The tally and the proposed 100% transfer were reported by BBC Sport in its 16 November 2020 account.
Why was the supporters’ vote significant?
Wrexham had been fan-owned since 2011. The ballot was therefore a decision by members of the supporters’ trust on whether to back a proposed change in control, rather than a routine announcement by a club board. The Trust’s statement, as reported by BBC Sport, said the RR McReynolds Company, LLC would take 100% control of Wrexham Football Club Limited, subject to final agreement and league and FA confirmation.

At completion, the new owners acknowledged the Trust’s contribution, saying the club was in a position to thrive because of its efforts. They described themselves as “the latest stewards in the long and storied history of Wrexham AFC” and said the Trust would continue to have an important role at the club. These were statements of intent at the time of completion, not guarantees of particular future results. BBC Sport reported the completion statement.
What was “bizarre” about the announcement video?
The title’s word “bizarre” is a characterization of the video’s unusual, joke-forward announcement style. Contemporary descriptions support calling the clip comic: a video search result described a comical video press release, and RTÉ characterized it as a comic video involving the owners and the club’s kit sponsor. Those descriptions establish the broad tone, but not a verifiable transcript or full account of its visuals.

It is therefore safer to describe the video as a comic announcement than to attribute a specific line, scene or gag to it without a reliable record. The takeover itself was formalized through the approval and completion process, not by the video.
What did the new owners say they wanted to do?
In their completion statement, Reynolds and McElhenney said they wanted to grow the team, return Wrexham to the English Football League (EFL), improve attendances and the stadium, and make a positive difference in the wider community. They also cited protecting the club’s heritage, reinforcing community values, promoting Wrexham at home and abroad, and creating a winning culture. These were the owners’ stated aims in February 2021, not outcomes that had already been achieved.

How did Wrexham’s later rise change the story?
When the takeover was proposed, Wrexham played in the National League, the fifth tier of English football. The club’s subsequent rise belongs to the years after the announcement, not to what supporters knew when they voted. A BBC Sport timeline, published on 26 April 2025 and updated on 9 February 2026, records three consecutive promotions that took Wrexham from non-league football to the Championship. It also notes that the Welcome to Wrexham docuseries and celebrity attendance helped expand the club’s global profile. BBC Sport’s timeline
That later success helps explain why the takeover became a major sports and media story. It should not be confused with the original transaction: members backed the proposal in 2020, and the purchase became complete in February 2021.
