Forbes estimated Rupert Murdoch & family’s net worth at $24.9 billion as of September 10, 2026. That is a dated estimate for a family grouping—not an audited statement of Murdoch’s individual assets or an exact figure for October 8, 2026.

What does the $24.9 billion estimate mean?

The figure comes from Forbes’ profile for “Rupert Murdoch & family.” Forbes describes its billionaire ranking as tracking wealth changes daily, but its surfaced profile estimate is dated September 10, 2026. It should therefore be cited with that date and family wording, rather than presented as Murdoch’s precise personal net worth today. Forbes’ profile provides the estimate; its real-time billionaires list explains that its rankings track daily wealth changes for people it has confirmed as billionaires.

A public ranking estimate is not the same as a disclosed, audited balance sheet. The cited sources do not provide an itemized calculation of Murdoch’s personal assets and liabilities, or a same-day October 8 estimate. The “& family” label also matters: the $24.9 billion should not be restated as wealth belonging to Rupert alone.

Why News Corp ownership figures are not his net worth

Corporate share disclosures describe particular ownership and voting interests in particular companies; they do not total a person’s assets, debts, or family wealth. News Corp’s 2025 annual report, for example, reports that as of June 30, 2025, the Murdoch Family Trust beneficially owned less than 1% of News Corp Class A common stock and approximately 40.6% of its Class B common stock. Because Murdoch could appoint certain members of the corporate trustee’s board, he could be deemed a beneficial owner of trust shares, but he disclaimed beneficial ownership of those shares. The report also describes additional Class B shares and gives an aggregate figure of approximately 41.2% of Class B shares that he beneficially owned or could be deemed to beneficially own. News Corp’s 2025 annual report presents these as company share disclosures, not a valuation of his total personal fortune.

Beneficial ownership, economic entitlement, and voting control are related but distinct. A person may be deemed a beneficial owner under a corporate filing because of authority over shares without claiming those shares as personal property. Likewise, a voting-control arrangement does not establish that the person controls the full economic value of a trust or owns its assets outright.

What changed in the Murdoch family trust arrangement?

In a September 8, 2025 announcement, News Corp said litigation over the trust had ended. The company described new beneficiary trusts for Lachlan, Grace, and Chloe Murdoch, while Prudence MacLeod, Elisabeth Murdoch, and James Murdoch would cease to be beneficiaries of trusts holding News Corp or Fox shares. The arrangement also involved cash consideration funded partly through public share sales. News Corp’s announcement said remaining shares held through LGC Holdco were expected to represent approximately 33.1% of News Corp Class B shares and approximately 36.2% of Fox Corporation Class B shares; voting control of those specified shares would rest solely with Lachlan through his appointed managing director. The announcement also said Rupert Murdoch would continue as News Corp Chairman Emeritus.

Those percentages concern expected trust-held shares after the announced transactions, not Rupert’s personal shareholdings or net worth. A separate 2026 SEC-filed News Corp proxy says the trust held approximately 40.7% of outstanding News Corp Class B common stock before a September 2025 sale of 14,071,293 shares. The sale generated approximately $450 million in gross proceeds to selling stockholders. That transaction-specific amount should not be added to Rupert’s net worth: the proxy describes proceeds to certain selling stockholders, not a payment to him personally. The proxy and related SEC filings discuss the share sale and trust holdings.

Each number answers a different question: Forbes estimates a family’s wealth, while company filings report interests in specific share classes and transactions. They are not interchangeable measures and should not be added together to create a net-worth total.
