The evidence is narrower than the claim that scalpers cleared every card in Europe: it centers on specific Founders Edition retailer channels, and no public independent audit establishes what happened across every country or model.
What happened at the European launch?
Nvidia announced the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 for release in late January 2025. In the affected European Founders Edition channels, hardware reporting said ordering links became usable before the advertised public launch time, around 3 p.m. Central European Time on January 30. According to ComputerBase, orders were placed early using a bot associated with a German scalping-focused Discord server. That is reported evidence, not a public forensic audit of all orders or inventory.
Retailer statements confirm that stock was scarce, but a sellout by itself does not prove bot activity. The bot allegation rests on reporting about early access to order paths and automated purchases. German and other European coverage described cards appearing on resale marketplaces soon afterward; ComputerBase reported RTX 5090 Founders Edition listings around €1,800 or more on eBay. Those were asking prices, not proof that buyers paid those amounts.
Overclockers UK said both cards sold out shortly after launch and that it had to stop preorders because of limited quantities, according to Tom’s Guide. These reports document a severe launch shortage in particular channels; they do not show that every European buyer, retailer or country had the same experience.

Which cards and markets were affected?
The strongest reports concern Nvidia’s Founders Edition versions of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, especially ordering routes in Germany and neighboring markets. UK reporting documented a separate retailer shortage. Availability could differ by country, retailer, distribution arrangement and the time a listing went live.
Founders Edition cards are not the whole RTX 50-series supply. Nvidia’s launch announcement also named partner manufacturers including Asus, Colorful, Gainward, GALAX, Gigabyte, INNO3D, KFA2, MSI, Palit, PNY and Zotac. Their cards use separate designs, pricing and retail channels. The reports about early Founders Edition orders do not establish that bots bought all partner cards, complete PCs containing these GPUs, or later restocks. Nvidia’s launch details are at its product announcement.

How could bots get ahead of ordinary buyers?
The reported sequence was that an order path appeared before the public release time, the link circulated among scalpers, and automated purchasing tools submitted orders before ordinary shoppers reached the public storefront. If a link can place an order before a launch gate is active for everyone, the advantage is not simply faster clicking: it is earlier access.
“Bot” can describe a mix of tools rather than one fully autonomous program. Stock monitors can detect a live product page; cart or checkout scripts can reduce manual steps; alert channels can distribute links; and human operators may complete or supervise purchases. Reporting has not established that any one named tool or group acquired the entire European supply. The public evidence also does not show whether every reported order completed, remained valid, or was later canceled.

How much did the shortage affect prices and wait times?
Nvidia announced U.S. starting prices of $1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080. These are U.S. launch MSRPs, not European checkout prices; VAT, currency conversion, distribution and the specific card design affect local prices. The figures appear in Nvidia’s Blackwell announcement.
Higher-priced partner cards are not automatically scalper listings. Cooling, factory tuning, retailer margins and local taxes can affect their prices. To judge a resale offer, distinguish an authorized retail price from a marketplace asking price and from a completed sale; also account for shipping, VAT and marketplace fees. The €1,800-plus eBay figures reported by ComputerBase were listings, not confirmed transaction prices.

Restock estimates were retailer- and market-specific, not delivery promises for Europe as a whole. UK reporting cited estimates of three to 16 weeks for RTX 5090 and two to six weeks for RTX 5080 in some channels, while Overclockers UK stopped preorders amid limited supply. A separate four-month concern reported by Tom’s Guide should likewise be understood as a retailer-specific warning, not a guaranteed wait for every buyer.

For most buyers, waiting for a legitimate retailer shipment is the lower-risk financial choice. A launch premium buys speed, but it can disappear as supply changes, and marketplace purchases add risks that an ordinary retail transaction does not.

- Confirm the exact GPU model and that the seller physically has it; a listing may represent an allocation or preorder instead.
- Ask for a dated proof of purchase and check that the manufacturer warranty applies in your country.
- Review the seller’s identity, return terms and payment protections. Avoid bank-transfer-only offers and pressure to pay immediately.
- Compare the total checkout cost, including delivery, VAT and marketplace fees, with current authorized-retailer offers.
- Consider whether a partner card, a complete system, a previous-generation GPU or waiting for another shipment better fits your workload and budget.
Retailer stock alerts and price-monitoring tools can help you notice a listing, but they do not reserve a card or guarantee checkout. Treat “in stock” cautiously unless the item can be added to the cart and the order can actually be completed. Avoid services promising queue evasion, CAPTCHA circumvention or automated bulk purchasing.
What is confirmed—and what is not?
Retailers reported limited quantities, rapid sellouts and, in the UK, stopped preorders. German hardware publications reported early ordering paths and bot-assisted purchases for Founders Edition stock. Nvidia’s public launch announcement covered product availability and pricing but did not confirm the alleged bot operation. The available reporting does not amount to an independent inventory audit across every European country.
Later, Nvidia clarified that Founders Edition cards removed from its website had not been discontinued; they had been taken down while out of stock, according to Tom’s Hardware. That later clarification is another reason not to read the launch sellout as proof that the cards were permanently unavailable.
