Two Protocols That Look the Same but Are Very Different
RTMP and RTMPS are both ways to send your video from your encoder to YouTube’s servers. The difference is one word: encryption. RTMP sends your stream key and video unencrypted. RTMPS encrypts both. On public networks, this difference means security. On home networks, this difference barely matters. But on public Wi-Fi, it means the difference between a private stream and anyone nearby intercepting your broadcast.
Most creators have never heard the terms RTMP and RTMPS because YouTube handles the protocol automatically. You paste your stream key into OBS, and OBS handles the rest. But if you’re using a custom ingest server, building a streaming application, or broadcasting from a public network, understanding the protocol choice matters.
What RTMP Is and Why It Exists
RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. It was designed by Macromedia (now Adobe) in the early 2000s to stream video from encoders to servers and servers to players. It’s not a video codec; it’s the mechanism that packages your video data and sends it to YouTube.
RTMP works like this:
- Your encoder (OBS, Streamlabs) opens a connection to YouTube’s RTMP server at a specific address and port (usually 1935).
- Your encoder sends your stream key to prove you own the YouTube channel.
- Your encoder sends video and audio data continuously.
- YouTube’s server receives the data, encodes it into multiple quality tiers, and delivers it to viewers.
The whole process is unencrypted. Any packet sniffer on the same network can see your stream key and your video data. On a home Wi-Fi network where only you and trusted family are present, this is not a practical risk. On a coffee shop Wi-Fi, it’s a significant risk: anyone with a laptop and Wireshark can intercept your stream key.

RTMPS: RTMP With Encryption
RTMPS adds encryption on top of RTMP. The “S” stands for Secure, indicating SSL/TLS encryption (the same encryption that protects your bank login).
With RTMPS:
- Your encoder opens an encrypted connection to YouTube’s RTMPS server (port 443, the standard HTTPS port).
- Your encoder sends your stream key encrypted.
- Your encoder sends video and audio data encrypted.
- YouTube’s server decrypts and processes the data.
From the outside, an attacker sees only encrypted bytes. They cannot extract your stream key or see any of your video.
The tradeoff: RTMPS uses slightly more CPU (encryption is computationally expensive) and slightly more bandwidth (encrypted data has small overhead). Modern computers handle both easily, but on a Raspberry Pi or an old mobile device, the CPU cost might matter.
Which Should You Use
If you’re streaming from:
- Home Ethernet: RTMP is fine. Your network is isolated.
- Home Wi-Fi: Use RTMPS if possible. Your neighbors could intercept RTMP.
- Coffee shop Wi-Fi: Use RTMPS. Mandatory. An attacker two tables away can intercept RTMP.
- Mobile hotspot: Use RTMPS. Hotspots are less secure than home networks.
- Corporate network: Use whatever your IT policy requires, usually RTMPS.
YouTube supports both RTMP and RTMPS ingest. Most modern encoders default to RTMPS. Check your OBS or Streamlabs settings to confirm you’re using RTMPS if you’re on public networks.

- RTMPS URL:
rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/(encrypted) - RTMP URL:
rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live/(unencrypted)
If you’re manually entering the server URL (instead of letting OBS auto-detect), use the RTMPS URL. If you’re using OBS’s auto-setup with your YouTube channel, it defaults to RTMPS, and you don’t need to change anything.
In Streamlabs, the same distinction applies. Check Settings > Stream > Ingest Server. If it says “rtmps://”, you’re encrypted. If it says “rtmp://”, you’re not.
The Practical Risk: When Does This Matter
RTMP data interception is possible but requires:
- An attacker on the same network. This is trivial on public Wi-Fi, where many people are present.
- The attacker has packet-sniffing tools. Free tools like Wireshark exist, and anyone with basic technical knowledge can use them.
- The attacker extracts your stream key. Once they have it, they can start their own stream on your YouTube channel.
This has happened. A streamer on public Wi-Fi had their stream key intercepted, and someone else started broadcasting on their channel (interrupting the legitimate stream).

The risk is low for most creators (most people on public Wi-Fi are not trying to steal stream keys), but the fix is simple: use RTMPS.
Performance Impact: Does RTMPS Slow Down Streaming
RTMPS is encrypted, so it requires CPU cycles for encryption/decryption. The impact is typically:

RTMP is appropriate only if:
- You’re streaming from a controlled network. Your home Ethernet with no untrusted devices.
- Your stream key is not secret. Some creators intentionally make their stream key public (rare, but it happens for interactive streams where viewers can submit video).
- You’re testing or developing. Temporary streams where interception is not a concern.
For any production stream, especially on public networks, use RTMPS.
Stream Key Security: Beyond the Protocol
Even with RTMPS, protecting your stream key is critical:
- Never share your stream key publicly. Anyone with it can broadcast on your channel.
- Rotate your stream key regularly. YouTube lets you generate a new stream key, which invalidates the old one. Do this monthly or if you suspect exposure.
- Use unique credentials for different devices. If you stream from your PC, phone, and tablet, generate a different stream key for each. If one device is compromised, the others are still secure.
- Use a password manager. Never hardcode stream keys in configuration files. Store them in a password manager or environment variable.
The protocol (RTMP vs RTMPS) is one layer. Key management is another. Both matter.

Cloud Streaming and Protocol
With StreamNeo, you upload your video once and paste your YouTube stream key once. The service handles the RTMPS connection to YouTube from its servers. Your computer is off. Your home network is not involved. This eliminates the security concern entirely: your stream key is on StreamNeo’s secure server, not transmitted over your home Wi-Fi or public hotspot. The stream runs continuously with automatic recovery, and nobody on your network can intercept anything because nothing is being transmitted over your network.
For creators streaming from untrusted networks (coffee shops, shared offices, mobile hotspots), cloud encoding removes the security concern and the latency variance that comes with public networks.
Keep YouTube Live Running Without Your PC
StreamNeo is a practical fit when you want a prerecorded video to become an always-on YouTube Live stream without leaving an encoder running. Upload the video and paste your YouTube stream key, then the broadcast runs in the cloud while your PC stays off.
For a dependable unattended broadcast, StreamNeo checks stream health every 30 seconds and automatically restarts a dropped stream. That keeps the live workflow independent of an unattended home computer or public Wi-Fi connection.
You can validate the workflow with a free 24-hour 720p/30fps trial with no card at signup. Upload a test video, paste the key, and use the trial to confirm the channel behavior before committing to a longer always-on setup.

FAQ
Can I use RTMP if my stream key is public?
Technically yes, but use RTMPS anyway. Even if your stream key is public, encrypting traffic protects the integrity of the stream (preventing tampering) and hides your video from casual interception.
How do I know if I’m using RTMP or RTMPS?
Check your encoder settings. In OBS, go to Settings > Stream and look at the “Server” field. If it starts with rtmps://, you’re encrypted. If it starts with rtmp://, you’re not.
If someone intercepts my RTMP key, what happens?
They can start their own broadcast on your YouTube channel, interrupting your stream. YouTube’s system will show both streams as active, and viewers might see either one. Your channel is compromised until you rotate the stream key.
Does RTMPS prevent YouTube from seeing my stream?
No. YouTube decrypts the data on their end. Encryption protects your data in transit (between your encoder and YouTube), not at YouTube. YouTube still sees your stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs RTMPS required by YouTube?
YouTube supports both RTMP and RTMPS. Neither is required. But YouTube’s best-practice guidance recommends RTMPS for security.
If I’m the only person on my network, do I need RTMPS?
RTMP is functionally safe on an isolated network. RTMPS is still a good habit: the performance cost is negligible, and if you ever stream from a less-isolated network (guest Wi-Fi, etc.), you’re already using the secure protocol.
Can streaming at RTMPS cause buffering?
No. The protocol does not affect quality, bitrate, or buffering. It only encrypts the transmission.
What if my encoder doesn’t support RTMPS?
Modern encoders all support RTMPS. If you’re using very old software (pre-2015), you might only have RTMP. Consider upgrading. OBS, Streamlabs, and Wirecast all support RTMPS.
