The RRC Northern Railway application window for its 4,096 Act Apprentice training slots is closed. The 2024 notice required more than a 10th-pass certificate: applicants needed at least 50% aggregate marks in 10th and an ITI certificate in the relevant trade. These were apprenticeship training slots, not permanent railway jobs.
Is the RRC NR 4,096-slot application open now?
No. Railway Recruitment Cell, Northern Railway issued notification RRC/NR/06/2024/Act Apprentice on 13 August 2024. Applications opened on 16 August and closed on 16 September 2024. The notice expected the merit list in November 2024, and the official RRC site later marked the application link closed and published candidate-status notices. RRC Northern Railway 2024 notification and status
The 4,096 figure refers to notified apprenticeship training slots for the 2024–25 cycle. It does not mean Northern Railway was recruiting 4,096 permanent employees.
What qualifications did the 2024 notice require?
Passing 10th alone was not enough. An applicant had to meet both academic requirements, with results available by the notification date:
#1 Best Overall
- Pass SSC, Matriculation or an equivalent 10th-standard examination under the 10+2 system, with at least 50% aggregate marks, from a recognized board.
- Pass ITI in the relevant trade, with a certificate issued by NCVT or SCVT and recognized by the Government of India.
Candidates whose results were awaited when the notification was issued were ineligible under that cycle’s rules. Eligibility requirements in the 2024 notice
What were the age limits and relaxations?
For this cycle, age was calculated as of the application closing date, 16 September 2024. Applicants had to be at least 15 and under 24 on that date. The notice specified upper-age relaxations of five years for SC/ST candidates, three years for OBC candidates and ten years for persons with disabilities, in addition to separate provisions for ex-servicemen. These cutoffs apply to the 2024 notification only. Applicants considering a later cycle should use that cycle’s notice rather than carrying forward these dates or limits.
How did selection work?
The notice described merit-based selection, not a written examination. 10th and ITI marks received equal weight in preparing the merit list. Candidates were ranked by cluster, trade and community in descending score order. Selection criteria in the 2024 notice

Where candidates had the same score, the older candidate ranked first. If their dates of birth also matched, the candidate who passed matriculation earlier ranked first.
Why trade and unit choices mattered
Applicants needed to match their ITI trade to slots available in their chosen cluster and unit. The notice warned that an application could be ineffective if no slot matched the candidate’s trade. Unit and cluster choices could not be changed after final submission. Trade, cluster and unit conditions

What fee and documents did applicants need?
The 2024 application fee was a non-refundable Rs. 100, payable online. The notice also contained exemptions and other fee rules, so applicants needed to check the original notification for the rule applicable to them. It did not state a fixed stipend figure in the sections reviewed; stipend and training period were subject to applicable rules. Fee and training terms
Applicants had to upload education certificates and any relevant category or disability documents with the application. At document verification, they were required to bring originals and two self-attested photocopies. The notice warned that missing required uploads could lead to rejection. Does an apprenticeship guarantee a railway job?
No. The notification explicitly said: “Imparting Training in Railway will not confer any right to the candidates for their absorption in Railway after successful completion of training.” It also stated that the railway was not obliged to offer a job after training. The 4,096 slots were for training, not a promise of permanent employment. Absorption disclaimer in the 2024 notice
How does the 4,096-slot notice differ from the later cycle?
Northern Railway subsequently issued a separate 2025–26 apprentice notification listing 4,116 slots. Official records show document-verification activity for that cycle in February 2026. It was a new cycle, not an extension or reopening of the 2024 application window. Northern Railway records for the later apprentice cycle
Anyone assessing a later recruitment should verify its own application status, dates, qualifications, age cutoff, selection process and document-verification instructions in the relevant official notice; the 2024 terms above do not automatically apply.
