Ross Ulbricht was pardoned on January 21, 2025. The U.S. Department of Justice records the action as a pardon, and the president’s warrant specifies a “Full and Unconditional Pardon” for Ulbricht’s Southern District of New York convictions. He was not still awaiting a January release: the pardon took place in 2025.
What the official record says
The Department of Justice clemency listing gives January 21, 2025, as the date of Ulbricht’s pardon and records his prior sentence as life imprisonment, followed by lifetime supervised release. The pardon warrant identifies the convictions as those in the Southern District of New York and describes the relief as a “Full and Unconditional Pardon.” DOJ clemency listing · DOJ pardon warrant

“Pardon” is the precise term for the action documented by DOJ. It should not be confused with the separate January 20, 2025 clemency actions involving January 6-related offenses.
Why people were discussing a January release
Ulbricht’s family and supporters campaigned for his release through Free Ross, a family-run advocacy campaign. The site later confirmed that he received the pardon on January 21 and expressed the family’s gratitude. That is the family’s account of its response; the DOJ warrant is the primary record of the legal action. Free Ross

Ulbricht was sentenced in 2015 after his conviction in the Silk Road case. Contemporary reporting described Silk Road as an online or underground marketplace associated with drug sales. Associated Press coverage · NPR coverage

Supporters campaigned for Ulbricht’s release, while critics emphasized the harm associated with drugs sold through the marketplace. The Washington Post, for example, reported the perspective of a mother whose 16-year-old son died after using drugs linked to Silk Road. Those accounts represent distinct views of the case; the pardon settled the legal question of executive clemency, not the broader debate over whether it was justified. The Washington Post
