Rogers’ $75 3G fee explained: who was charged and what customers could do

Rogers’ 2025 3G retirement involved a reported $75 one-time charge and $3 monthly fee for identified lines. Here is who was at risk, why June 30 differed from July 31 and August 7, and how customers could challenge a mistaken charge.

Yes—Rogers’ reported $75 3G Administrative Charge was real, but it was not a fee charged to every phone that merely supported 3G. In 2025, Rogers identified particular Canadian lines and devices as still relying on its legacy 3G service or lacking the LTE/VoLTE configuration required for continued service. Affected customers were also told about a $3 monthly Legacy Network Usage Fee unless they transitioned.

The dates caused confusion: June 30, 2025 was the reported deadline to complete the transition without the charge; July 31 was the originally communicated retirement date; and Rogers began a phased shutdown on August 7, according to later reporting. This is now a historical 3G event, not an upcoming 2026 deadline.

What Rogers announced

Rogers said it was retiring its Canadian 3G mobile network to modernize its network and free spectrum and infrastructure for newer technologies. Its notices and media coverage described two possible charges for lines Rogers identified as affected:

  • $75 one-time 3G Administrative Charge
  • $3 monthly Legacy Network Usage Fee

The reported announcement appeared on June 2, 2025 in MobileSyrup. Rogers also offered some eligible affected customers a no-cost upgrade to a 5G-capable device. That was a targeted transition offer, not a promise that every Rogers subscriber could select any phone free of charge.

Rogers called the $75 amount an administrative charge connected with the transition. It should not be described as a normal price for 3G service or as a guaranteed licence to keep using 3G for a fixed period. Customer accounts and timing produced differing understandings of what happened after the charge appeared.

Why June 30, July 31 and August 7 all appeared

Date What it meant
June 2, 2025 MobileSyrup reported the $75 charge, the $3 monthly fee and the transition offer.
June 30, 2025 The reported deadline for an affected line to complete the transition and avoid the administrative charge. It was not necessarily the date the network would be switched off.
July 31, 2025 The retirement date quoted in Rogers customer notices discussed in the Rogers Community forum.
August 7, 2025 Rogers began a progressive shutdown, rather than an everywhere-at-once July 31 cutoff, according to MobileSyrup’s later update.

Rogers’ communications therefore used one date for avoiding the charge and another for the planned retirement. The later phased rollout added a third date to the story.

Who was actually at risk?

Clearly vulnerable devices

  • Phones that could use only 3G or older network technologies.
  • Phones whose voice service depended on 3G because LTE voice, or VoLTE, was unavailable.
  • Unsupported imported or grey-market models, even when they advertised LTE.
  • Lines Rogers’ systems specifically identified as using 3G.

Why an LTE or 5G phone could still be flagged

Radio hardware alone did not settle the question. Rogers’ operational requirements could also involve the exact regional model, supported frequency bands, carrier firmware, IMS and VoLTE settings, device approval, the SIM card and the IMEI recorded on the account. A phone replaced months earlier could remain associated with an old device in Rogers’ records.

Customers on the Rogers Community forum reported LTE- and 5G-capable phones being flagged or needing an account correction. Those are individual experiences, not proof that every compatible phone was misclassified.

Other connected equipment

The issue was not limited to handsets. Cellular tablets, smartwatches, security systems, vehicle systems, alarms and trackers can also depend on legacy network support. A replacement process designed for a phone may not apply to these devices.

Does a 3G icon prove the fee was valid?

No. A handset may fall back to 3G in a weak-coverage area or during a call even though it supports LTE and 5G. Conversely, an LTE-capable phone can fail Rogers’ requirements if VoLTE is not provisioned, the firmware is incompatible, the model is not approved, the SIM is outdated or the account has the wrong IMEI.

The useful questions are whether the line was provisioned for LTE/VoLTE, whether the exact model and regional variant were accepted by Rogers, whether the software and carrier profile were current, and whether the account identified the correct device. Wi-Fi calling is not a universal substitute for compatible cellular VoLTE, and it should not be treated as a guarantee of emergency access.

What affected customers needed to do

  1. Read the notice carefully. Confirm the specific phone number or line Rogers identified.
  2. Record the exact device. Note the model number, regional variant and IMEI rather than relying on a marketing name.
  3. Check compatibility. Use Rogers’ bring-your-own-device compatibility guidance.
  4. Install updates. Apply available operating-system and carrier-firmware updates.
  5. Check VoLTE or LTE calling. The menu wording varies by manufacturer, Android version, firmware and region; do not assume one universal setting path.
  6. Restart the phone. Network provisioning changes may not apply until the device reconnects.
  7. Replace an outdated SIM if Rogers requires it.
  8. Correct the account record. Ask Rogers to refresh the IMEI and device assignment if the phone was replaced or misidentified.
  9. Test the result. Make a voice call, send SMS, use mobile data and verify that the phone behaves as expected in more than one location. Do not assume emergency calling is covered merely because data works.
  10. Keep evidence. Save the notice, screenshots, bills, chat transcripts, dates, model details and IMEI if a charge is disputed.

If a compatible phone was charged

Ask Rogers to identify the reason the line was flagged: actual 3G use, an unsupported device profile, an old SIM, a stale IMEI or another provisioning issue. Request that the representative correct or refresh the device record and provide a written explanation.

If Rogers confirms the phone was compatible or the account was wrong, request removal or a credit for the charge. Keep the case number and copies of every response. Rogers’ published complaint path is Resolve a concern. If the matter remains unresolved, a customer may consider the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS) where the complaint is eligible.

Forum posts describe long waits, inconsistent answers and store or support agents correcting records. These reports show why documentation matters; they do not establish a universal Rogers refund policy.

Replacement and switching choices

Option When it makes sense Main caution
Rogers upgrade or support You want to keep the number and plan and have Rogers verify eligibility or replace the device. The 2025 free-upgrade offer was eligibility-specific and historical. Current models, taxes, activation, shipping, setup, SIM and plan terms must be checked separately.
Unlocked Canadian-model phone through BYOD You want more choice or potentially lower total cost while keeping Rogers service. “Unlocked” does not guarantee Rogers VoLTE approval. Confirm the exact model, firmware, IMEI and carrier support first.
Move to another provider You prefer another network or support process. Changing carriers does not cure a phone without modern voice capability or a compatible imported variant.
Keep the old device on Wi-Fi The handset is useful without cellular voice or mobile data. This does not preserve cellular calling, SMS or dependable emergency access.
Replace specialized equipment A tracker, alarm, vehicle system or wearable depends on 3G. Confirm the replacement hardware and service support the required network and emergency functions.

If shopping for a replacement, verify the Canadian model directly with Rogers before buying. Official manufacturer starting points include Apple’s Canadian iPhone page, Samsung Canada’s Galaxy page and Google Store Canada phones. A new handset does not automatically remove a disputed $75 charge.

What this means now

As of August 18, 2026, the 2025 Rogers 3G charge story is historical. Rogers’ currently surfaced retirement material concerns a separate 2G policy, including a different $75 2G Administrative Charge and $3 monthly 2G Legacy Network Usage Fee ending after June 30, 2026. That page is Rogers’ 2G retirement guide; it is not evidence that the 2025 3G fee remains active.
