Robot Vacuum Not Connecting to Wi-Fi? Troubleshooting Steps

Check the home network, password, Wi-Fi band, and app permissions before restarting your robot vacuum or resetting its Wi-Fi. Steps vary by model and brand.

If your robot vacuum will not connect, first confirm that your phone is on the correct home Wi-Fi network, re-enter the password, and check the vacuum’s model-specific network requirements. Then verify app permissions and signal strength before restarting equipment or resetting the robot’s Wi-Fi. A Wi-Fi problem does not always stop basic cleaning: some models can still start a cleanup and return to their dock using onboard buttons.

1. Select the home network and verify the password

Connect your phone to the home Wi-Fi network you want the vacuum to use, then enter that network’s password again in the vacuum app. During setup, the robot may also broadcast a temporary Wi-Fi network. That network is used as part of setup; it is not the home network the robot should join for normal operation. In the app, select your home network rather than the robot’s temporary network. See Roborock’s Wi-Fi failure and offline guidance and its Android setup instructions for examples of this flow.

2. Confirm that the vacuum supports your Wi-Fi band

Check the manual or support page for your exact vacuum model before changing router settings. Band compatibility is not universal across brands. Roborock states that its current robots support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and do not support 5 GHz: “Our robots currently only support the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band and do not support 5GHz at present.” That statement applies to Roborock, not every robot vacuum. Read Roborock’s Wi-Fi band guidance.

If your router uses one network name for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Roborock recommends trying that combined network first. If setup still fails, ask your internet provider (ISP) or router manufacturer whether the bands can be separated or whether another router setting is preventing connection. Do not change the router’s network layout until you have checked what your vacuum supports.

3. Check the app’s phone permissions

Permission requirements depend on the app and phone operating system. Roborock’s setup guidance asks users to enable location permission; its support article also calls for local-network access on iOS 14 or later. Follow the current prompts in your vacuum app and check its instructions for your specific phone and operating-system version. Roborock’s connection troubleshooting guidance and Android instructions describe its requirements; other manufacturers may differ.

4. Improve reception and check security settings

Try setup close to the router

If the signal may be weak where the robot is docked, move it closer to the router for setup. Roborock’s S4 Max manual lists poor Wi-Fi reception as a possible cause of connection problems and recommends a location with good reception. Consult your model’s manual for equivalent guidance: Roborock S4 Max manual.

Check supported encryption before changing it

Roborock’s general connection guidance says WEP is unsupported and advises WPA or WPA2. Security compatibility varies by device, so check the vacuum’s manual and the router manufacturer’s documentation before changing encryption. If you are unsure how a setting affects other devices on your network, ask your ISP or router manufacturer rather than making an unfamiliar change.

Keep advanced router changes optional

Roborock also mentions trying a network name or password without special characters and changing DNS to 8.8.8.8. Treat these as brand-specific, optional troubleshooting suggestions—not routine fixes for every vacuum. DNS changes affect router configuration and are best left to someone comfortable managing those settings. The suggestions appear in Roborock’s connection guidance.

5. Restart the equipment, then reset Wi-Fi if necessary

  1. Restart the robot and router. Follow the instructions for your devices, then try adding or reconnecting the vacuum in its app.
  2. Reset the robot’s Wi-Fi only if the basic checks fail. Roborock advises resetting Wi-Fi if it is disabled or the configuration remains abnormal, then adding the robot again in the app. The exact controls and indicator signals vary by model.
  3. Follow the exact model’s reset procedure. For example, the Roborock S7 manual describes holding designated buttons until a “Resetting WiFi” alert and a slow-flashing Wi-Fi indicator appear. Do not assume those buttons or indicators apply to your vacuum; use its own manual or manufacturer support page.

A Wi-Fi reset is not the same as a factory reset. Do not choose a factory reset as an early troubleshooting step: it may remove saved settings, and the Wi-Fi procedure may be all that is needed. For model-specific examples, see Roborock’s support steps and the S4 Max manual.

If the vacuum still will not connect

Contact the vacuum manufacturer if its app and model-specific instructions do not restore the connection. If those instructions point to a router setting, network configuration, or internet service issue, contact your router manufacturer or ISP. The correct next step depends on the robot model, router, phone, and app; the cited Roborock procedures should not be treated as universal instructions for other brands.

Can you still use the vacuum without Wi-Fi?

Possibly. Roborock says its robots can perform basic cleanups and return to the dock using onboard buttons without Wi-Fi, while app-dependent features such as scheduling require a connection. Check your exact model’s manual to see which controls and functions remain available offline: Roborock’s offline guidance.
