The company said the vehicle could carry up to 500 pounds in 10 lockers and would initially target retailers and customers in Austin, Texas. However, the available reporting describes a planned rollout—not a verified nationwide service or confirmed operating business.
What Robomart announced
According to TechCrunch’s August 2025 report, Robomart’s RM5 is designed to deliver orders from multiple retailers in a single trip. The company described the vehicle as capable of carrying up to 500 pounds across 10 separate lockers.

Robomart’s proposed customer charge was a flat $3 delivery fee. Retailers would create storefronts through Robomart’s app, broadly resembling the marketplace model used by DoorDash and Uber Eats. The company planned to begin onboarding Austin retailers before a proposed service launch later in 2025.
That timing matters. The available evidence does not independently confirm that the Austin service launched, how many RM5 vehicles were deployed, or whether the service was still accepting consumer orders in 2026.

How the RM5 is supposed to work
- A customer orders from a participating retailer through Robomart’s app.
- The retailer prepares the order and places it in one of the vehicle’s lockers.
- The RM5 combines multiple orders into a route instead of making one trip per customer.
- Customers retrieve their orders from the assigned locker when the vehicle arrives.
The loading and handoff details above describe the apparent operating logic of the design; the original report did not establish every operational procedure, including customer authentication, building access, returns, or failed deliveries.
The RM5 is also different from a small sidewalk delivery rover. Robomart characterized it as a Level 4 autonomous vehicle, but that classification was presented as a company claim. The available source does not provide independent validation, a safety certification, or a complete account of remote supervision and regulatory permissions.
What the $3 fee does—and does not—tell customers
The defensible claim is that Robomart proposed a $3 delivery fee. That is not necessarily the same as a $3 total order cost.
A final checkout total could also include the merchandise or menu price, taxes, packaging charges, service fees, minimum-order requirements, or tips. The available reporting does not establish whether the fee would vary by distance, weather, order size, delivery time, or product category. It also does not confirm whether retailer prices would match in-store prices.
A predictable delivery charge could be attractive to customers and merchants, particularly for short, dense routes. But the headline fee alone does not show that Robomart would be cheaper overall than every DoorDash or Uber Eats order.

Can the economics work?
Robomart CEO Ali Ahmed said the robots could reduce delivery costs by up to 70%. He compared the model with a human driver earning about $18 per hour and representing roughly $9 to $10 per delivery in driver cost. These are company-provided estimates, not independently audited results.
The RM5’s 10-locker capacity is central to the proposed economics. One vehicle serving several nearby customers could spread its travel cost across multiple orders. A robot making a long trip for one order would be much less compelling.

Even without a human driver on every trip, the business would still have to pay for:
- Vehicle purchase, depreciation, charging, and maintenance
- Remote supervision and fleet dispatch
- Retailer or warehouse staff who pick, pack, and load orders
- Insurance, customer support, and refunds
- Damage, theft, vandalism, and failed deliveries
- Permits and compliance with local operating restrictions
In other words, autonomous delivery may reduce the cost of moving an order, but it does not eliminate the labor and overhead involved in preparing, supervising, and recovering that order. The key financial test is whether each vehicle can maintain high utilization and reliable batch density—not simply whether it can drive without a human behind the wheel.
Robomart versus DoorDash and Uber Eats
Robomart was positioning the RM5 against established delivery platforms, but it was not yet demonstrated to be an equivalent competitor.

Human couriers remain more adaptable when an order must be carried upstairs, delivered inside an apartment building, brought through a gated community, or handled during severe weather. DoorDash and Uber Eats also provide demand generation and operational infrastructure that a new autonomous network would have to build.
Practical limitations and failure points
The RM5’s real-world usefulness would depend on details that were not established in the announcement:
- Can it reach apartment buildings, offices, gated communities, and homes?
- What happens when a customer is unavailable or enters the wrong location?
- Can lockers accommodate hot food, drinks, groceries, frozen products, or fragile items?
- How long can food remain in a compartment while the vehicle completes other deliveries?
- What happens during rain, extreme heat, flooding, construction, crowds, or blocked routes?
- Who handles theft, tampering, damaged goods, late orders, cancellations, and refunds?
- How often must a remote operator intervene?
- What roads, lanes, or neighborhoods can the vehicle legally use?
There is also a labor trade-off. Retailers or fleet staff still need to prepare and load orders. If loading is slow or requires extensive manual coordination, some of the savings attributed to autonomous driving may shift rather than disappear.

Robomart began with a “store on wheels” concept: an autonomous mobile store that could bring products such as pharmacy goods and ice cream directly to customers. TechCrunch reported that the company began piloting that model in 2020.
The RM5 represented a strategic shift from carrying inventory controlled by Robomart toward transporting orders supplied by third-party retailers. That could make the company more like a delivery network and marketplace than a mobile convenience store.

Robomart was founded in 2017, according to the report. Ahmed previously founded U.K. delivery company Dispatch Messenger in 2015. He said Robomart had raised nearly $4 million; TechCrunch described total funding as less than $5 million. Those figures should be treated as reported company statements rather than a current, independently verified balance sheet.
Availability: announcement versus operating service
The original announcement described planned retailer onboarding in Austin and a planned launch later in 2025. It did not establish broad availability, a completed launch, the number of vehicles in service, or a confirmed price in 2026.
Readers should therefore treat the RM5 as a proposed Austin pilot and business model unless Robomart provides current first-party evidence of live ordering. The similarly named Robomart.com electronics store is unrelated to this autonomous-delivery startup; its terms page identifies it as an electronics business operated by Nextspark Ventures LLP.
What would prove the model is working?
The most useful evidence would be sustained operations in a defined market, not merely the vehicle’s carrying capacity or announced fee. Investors, retailers, and customers would need to see:

- A live ordering process and clearly stated delivery zone
- Actual fleet size, operating hours, and delivery times
- Reliable batch utilization per route
- Transparent retailer fees and customer checkout terms
- Performance across apartments, bad weather, and different order types
- Clear safety, insurance, supervision, and recovery procedures
Until those details are available, the $3 fee is best understood as a proposed pricing strategy, and the 70% savings figure as a company estimate.
