But that does not make every product equally protected or every website using the Robinhood name genuine. Check which Robinhood entity and account type you are using, and distinguish brokerage protections from ordinary investment risk.
Robinhood may suit self-directed investors, but whether it suits you depends on the products, costs, cash arrangements, and service features you need. Review the current account agreements and fee schedule before opening or using an account.
Robinhood at a glance

| Is Robinhood regulated? | Robinhood identifies its securities broker-dealer subsidiaries as registered broker-dealers and SIPC members. Other products may be offered through different entities and have different protections. |

| Is every Robinhood website genuine? | No. Scammers can impersonate the company through clone sites, fake ads, accounts, and messages. |
Is Robinhood authorised and legitimate?
Robinhood Markets, Inc. describes a business that includes retail brokerage and other financial services. For U.S. securities brokerage, Robinhood identifies Robinhood Financial LLC as the broker-dealer and Robinhood Securities, LLC as the clearing broker-dealer; it says both are registered broker-dealers and SIPC members. Check the current disclosures and the exact entity named in your account documents rather than treating every Robinhood product as the same service.
Legitimacy does not mean a product is risk-free, suitable for every investor, or covered by the same regulator or protection scheme as another product. In particular, Robinhood’s disclosures distinguish brokerage securities and cash from crypto, futures, and bank-deposit arrangements.

How to check that a Robinhood contact is genuine
Scammers may exploit a broker’s name to solicit deposits or sensitive account information. Be especially cautious of guaranteed-return claims, requests to send money to a personal account, or offers to recover losses for an upfront fee.
- Type the official Robinhood website address yourself or open the official app; do not rely on an unexpected message link.
- Check the domain carefully for misspellings, extra words, or unusual endings.
- Check the legal entity in your account terms or disclosures.
- Verify the entity using the relevant regulator’s own records, rather than relying on a number supplied by a caller.
- Use an official app-store listing and check the developer identity.
- Never give a password, one-time passcode, or recovery code to someone claiming to be support.
If you suspect impersonation, stop communicating, preserve messages and payment records, and contact Robinhood using the official app or website.
What can you trade on Robinhood?
Robinhood offers multiple services through different product arrangements, and availability and eligibility can vary. The source material identifies retail brokerage, crypto, advisory, digital banking, and private-markets access among Robinhood Markets’ business areas, but does not establish a complete current product list or a country-by-country comparison. Check the current disclosures and agreements for the specific account you plan to use.
Do not assume that every product associated with the Robinhood name is a securities brokerage product or has the same protection. Robinhood says crypto and futures positions are not protected by SIPC. Review the relevant product agreement before trading or transferring assets.

| Product or arrangement | What to check |
|---|---|
| Securities brokerage | Which broker-dealer handles the account, current fees, eligible assets, and applicable SIPC disclosures. |
| Uninvested brokerage cash | Whether you opted into cash sweep, which program banks may receive deposits, and the conditions and limits on FDIC coverage. |
| Crypto or futures | The provider and agreement, product-specific risks, and the fact that Robinhood says these positions are not SIPC-protected. |
| Other Robinhood services | The legal entity, cash or asset handling, fees, eligibility, and protections for that particular service. |
Robinhood fees: check the current schedule
Do not assume that a service is cost-free because a trading commission is absent or described as zero. Robinhood’s disclosure library lists a brokerage fee schedule dated September 30, 2026, a crypto customer agreement dated September 29, 2026, and a crypto fee schedule dated July 1, 2026. Fees and terms can change, so consult the current schedule and agreement for the product you use.
| Potential cost | What to check |
|---|---|
| Brokerage charges | Current fee schedule, including applicable transaction, regulatory, or exchange charges. |
| Options or margin | Applicable contract charges, borrowing rates, eligibility, and liquidation terms. |
| Crypto | The current crypto fee schedule and customer agreement; do not assume securities-brokerage terms apply. |
| Cash services | Terms and charges for the specific cash product or sweep arrangement. |
Before placing a trade or opting into a service, read the current schedule and agreement for that product. This research does not provide a complete line-by-line fee comparison or independently tested cost comparison with other brokers.
How customer money and investments are protected
Protections depend on the asset, account type, and legal entity. Robinhood’s protection disclosures say Robinhood Financial LLC and Robinhood Securities, LLC are SIPC members. Robinhood lists a SIPC limit of $500,000 per account type, including a $250,000 cash limit. These are protection terms described by Robinhood, not insurance against a fall in an investment’s value. SIPC explains that its protection applies to specified customer property when a member firm fails, subject to its rules and limits.
Robinhood says eligible uninvested brokerage cash may be deposited at program banks through its opt-in cash-sweep program. It describes potential FDIC pass-through coverage of up to $2.5 million for individual investing accounts or $5 million for joint accounts, subject to program conditions, bank capacity, existing deposits at the same institutions, and ownership limits. Robinhood states that it is not an FDIC-insured bank. Do not assume these sweep terms apply to every cash product or account.

- SIPC is not protection against investment losses caused by market movements.
- Robinhood says crypto and futures positions are not SIPC-protected.
- FDIC coverage applies to qualifying deposits at insured banks under applicable conditions, not to every product associated with a financial app.
- Check the relevant product disclosure and account agreement to understand what is covered and by whom.
Robinhood also says its brokerage entities have additional insurance that supplements SIPC after SIPC limits are exhausted, subject to stated limits. Robinhood says this does not protect against market-value losses. Read the current disclosure for its terms.
Trading risks and operational limitations
Trading through an app does not remove investment risk. Consider the following before placing an order:
- Market risk: investments can fall in value, and protections such as SIPC do not reimburse ordinary market losses.
- Product risk: crypto and futures have different arrangements from securities in a brokerage account and, according to Robinhood, are not SIPC-protected.
- Order and execution risk: understand the order type and applicable terms before trading; this research does not independently test order execution.
- Account and service risk: account agreements and product terms govern access, handling, and service arrangements. This research does not independently establish service reliability, outage frequency, or customer-support quality.
Review the risks and terms for each product rather than assuming a familiar interface or company name makes a transaction safe.

Robinhood identifies its securities broker-dealer subsidiaries as registered and SIPC-member firms. SIPC does not cover market losses, and Robinhood says crypto and futures positions are not SIPC-protected.
Check the exact account entity, current fees, product agreement, and cash-protection terms before depositing or trading. Use verified Robinhood channels only, and treat unsolicited investment offers using its name with suspicion.
