The right choice depends on how you plan to buy, what the full purchase and withdrawal will cost, and whether you want a provider to hold your Bitcoin or want to manage your own keys. No available comparison establishes one provider as universally cheapest or best.
Start with the custody decision
With a custodial account, the provider controls the private keys while your Bitcoin remains on its platform. You access your balance through your account, but you do not hold the keys yourself. With self-custody, you control the keys and take responsibility for backing them up and recovering access.
Robinhood Crypto is custodial: Robinhood says it manages customers’ keys and does not give them the private keys to its corporate crypto addresses (Robinhood Crypto transfers). Robinhood Wallet is a separate self-custody product. Robinhood says users hold its keys and must back them up; support cannot recover a lost secret recovery phrase (Robinhood Wallet).
A hardware wallet is optional equipment for a self-custody approach, not a requirement for buying Bitcoin or keeping it in an exchange account. Ledger says a Ledger device is required to take self-custody through its app (Ledger Bitcoin Wallet). Self-custody changes who is responsible for access and recovery; it does not eliminate risk.

Compare the purchase method and full cost
A displayed Bitcoin price is not necessarily the total cost. Compare the spread, any trading fee, payment method, order size, and market conditions. If you plan to withdraw Bitcoin later, include the withdrawal charge or network-fee estimate as well.
Coinbase: simple Trade or Advanced
Coinbase says simple Trade pricing includes a spread. Coinbase Advanced uses an order book and does not include a spread, though trading fees may still apply. The price and fees depend on the transaction, so review the order preview for the amount and payment method you intend to use (Coinbase pricing and fees disclosures).

Kraken: check which product you are using
Kraken’s fee schedule lists 1% for instant and recurring trades and 1.5% for custom orders, subject to Kraken+ terms and product scope. Those figures do not describe Kraken Pro spot trading. Kraken also distinguishes trading charges from crypto withdrawal and funding-provider fees, so verify the applicable product, location, and displayed fee before comparing (Kraken fee schedule; Overview of fees on Kraken).
Robinhood’s fee range is conditional
Robinhood says its exchange-routing fee tiers range from 0.00% to 0.95%, based on eligible trailing 30-day crypto volume. Maker/taker availability is rolling out gradually; market orders are taker orders, and routing can affect costs. The range is Robinhood’s fee-tier disclosure retrieved in 2026, not a guaranteed rate for an individual order (Robinhood crypto fee tiers).

Check withdrawal terms before choosing
If your plan is to move Bitcoin to a wallet, compare the withdrawal details for the specific asset and destination, not just the cost to buy. Coinbase says it estimates the network fee and discloses fees in the transaction preview; Robinhood says its estimated network fee appears before confirmation. Check any minimum, provider charge, and transfer limits shown for your account (Coinbase fees; Robinhood Crypto transfers).
Before sending, confirm the destination address and that the destination supports the transfer. Robinhood says its transfer feature is available to eligible customers, that limits depend on account-specific factors, and that it supports specified Bitcoin address formats but not Lightning transactions or Taproot addresses. Robinhood’s transfer help page warns: “Crypto transfers are final. Once sent, they can’t be canceled or reversed, even by Robinhood.” A mistaken address or incompatible network can mean permanent loss (Robinhood Crypto transfers).

- Purchase interface: Decide whether you prefer a simple buy flow or an order-book interface, and confirm which fees apply to that exact product.
- Total acquisition cost: Review spread, trading fee, payment method, order size, and the live price in the order preview.
- Withdrawal: Check Bitcoin network support, minimums, provider charges or estimates, and how often you expect to withdraw.
- Custody and recovery: Find out who controls the keys while Bitcoin is held on the platform and what recovery options exist if you lose account access or self-custody backup material.
- Availability and account conditions: Confirm access in your state or country, verification requirements, limits, and any subscription eligibility that affects the quoted terms.
- Support and reversibility: Provider support for an account differs from the recovery limits of self-custody and the finality of an on-chain transfer.
These providers’ fee disclosures describe different products and conditions; they do not establish a consistent, like-for-like fee basket. Robinhood also says crypto is not FDIC-insured or SIPC-protected and that Robinhood Crypto is not a FINRA or SIPC member. Its security page describes most held coins as being in cold storage, with some in hot wallets for operations, and says crime insurance covers a portion of assets; that company description is not a guarantee against loss (Robinhood crypto security; Buying and selling crypto).
