Robin Williams’ former family home in San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood sold for a reported $18.1 million, closing on January 23, 2025, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The property, at 540 El Camino Del Mar, had first been listed for $25 million.

Sale price and listing timeline

The sale followed two earlier asking prices. The Chronicle reported the $18.1 million closing price and, attributing the closing date to Compass, said the transaction closed January 23, 2025. The home was initially listed at $25 million in October 2023; by late 2024, its asking price had been reduced to $20 million, according to SFGATE.

Reduced asking price $20 million Reported as the asking price in late 2024; SFGATE

These figures describe different points in the listing and sale process, not separate estimates of the property’s value. The sale price and closing date are based on contemporaneous news reporting; the sources cited here do not establish a buyer’s identity or provide independent deed verification.

Where the house is and what it is like

The residence is at 540 El Camino Del Mar in Sea Cliff, a coastal San Francisco neighborhood. Reports describe views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands. Built in 1926 in the Italian Renaissance style, the house has approximately 10,600 square feet across three levels and six bedrooms, according to the Chronicle. SFGATE describes it as nearly 11,000 square feet, so published area figures are approximate and vary by outlet.

The Chronicle’s sale report lists five full bathrooms and three half bathrooms, along with a Japanese-themed bathroom, wine cellar, library, media room, walk-in vault, and a one-bedroom guest apartment. SFGATE also notes carved ceilings, arched windows, and a grand staircase. SFGATE identifies the architect as Earle B. Bertz; the Chronicle reports that the property had previously belonged to Oliver J. Olson, associated with a San Francisco shipping and lumber company.

Robin Williams’ family history in the home

Robin Williams and Marsha Garces Williams bought the house for $3.2 million in 1991, according to the Chronicle’s 2023 coverage. The couple renovated it in the early 1990s, reportedly rebuilding from the studs while retaining historic materials. After their divorce in 2010, Marsha retained ownership. In the Chronicle’s account, she described it as “a beautiful, happy house” and recalled “many, many fantastic years of fun and play and joy there.”

Reports have also described secret rooms and passageways added for the children, as well as a topiary dinosaur that stood above the walls. SFGATE describes a concealed room designed to serve as a safe room, office, or meditation space; these unusual features are reported descriptions rather than details independently confirmed here.

Compass listing agent Steven Mavromihalis told the Chronicle that the renovation preserved rare materials from the home’s 1926 construction: “They took great pains to preserve the rare and valuable building materials used in 1926, which are simply no longer available in the construction of modern homes.”
