Robert Irwin was announced as the first major speaker for the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit, scheduled for Crown Perth from 8–10 October 2024. The Western Australian Government said the 2024 summit would be the first time it had been held in Australia. The event dates have passed.
What was announced, and when?
In an announcement dated 30 May 2024, the Western Australian Government named Irwin as the summit’s first major speaker. That wording described the first speaker announcement; it did not mean he was the only or final headline speaker. The summit was scheduled for Crown Perth on 8–10 October 2024. Western Australian Government announcement, 30 May 2024.
Why was Perth’s summit described as an Australian first?
The WA Government said the 2024 summit was the first time the WTTC Global Summit had been held in Australia. This is the government’s claim about the host country, rather than a claim that Perth was the first city to host a WTTC summit worldwide. The summit’s stated theme was “Ancient Land: New Perspectives,” intended to showcase Western Australia’s cultural heritage and natural offerings. WA Government announcement.
Was Robert Irwin the only headline speaker?
No. Irwin was the first major speaker announced, not necessarily the only or final one. A later WA Government announcement named former US Secretary of State John Kerry as a headline speaker and continued to list Irwin among the speakers expected at the summit. The later announcement establishes that the lineup expanded beyond the initial announcement; it does not, by itself, document the complete final program. What did the government say about tourism and economic benefits?
Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti said Irwin’s interest in wildlife and nature made him a fitting speaker, and that he could be a draw for attendees. In the 30 May 2024 announcement, she said: “Robert’s passion for wildlife and nature definitely make him an ideal speaker for this event, and I have no doubt he’ll be a major drawcard for attendees.”
Saffioti also framed the summit as an economic opportunity, saying business delegate spend was “generally being up to five times more than the average leisure visitor.” That is an attributed statement in the government announcement; the announcement does not provide the methodology behind the comparison. It should not be treated as an independently established statistic applicable to every business delegate or event. WA Government announcement, 30 May 2024.

The available announcements establish the dates, venue, theme and announced speakers, but do not establish the complete final program or a measured economic outcome. A LinkedIn post recounts Irwin taking the stage, but it is an attendee’s account rather than an official post-event record. LinkedIn attendee recollection.
