In a Guardian interview published after the deal completed, Couhig also said he spoke to former chief executive Nigel Howe only two or three times and dealt with several sets of lawyers representing Dai.
What Couhig revealed about contact with Dai Yongge
Couhig’s account describes an acquisition process in which he had little direct contact with the seller. “I never spoke to Mr Dai,” he told The Guardian in an interview published on 19 May 2025. He said his contact with Nigel Howe, Reading’s former chief executive, was limited to two or three conversations, while communications involving Dai went through multiple sets of lawyers.
BBC Sport reported the same central point on 15 May 2025, quoting Couhig: “Communication with Mr Dai never happened, I wouldn’t recognise him if I saw him on the street.” These are Couhig’s descriptions of his own experience, not a conclusion inferred from the transaction documents.
Who bought Reading FC, and when did the takeover complete?
Reading FC announced on 3 May 2025 that it had agreed a sale in principle to Redwood Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Dogwood Football LLC, owned by Rob Couhig and Todd Trosclair. The club said the proposed sale covered the football club, Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground. At that point, it said completion remained subject to legal technicalities.

BBC Sport reported that Redwood Holdings completed the acquisition on 14 May 2025. The club’s 3 May announcement confirmed the sale in principle but did not state a purchase price.
How the earlier attempt affected the sale
The 2025 transaction followed an earlier Couhig bid that did not complete. The Guardian reported that a court judgment the previous month upheld Couhig’s claim to security over the stadium and training ground arising from that aborted deal.
In a statement on 27 March 2025, Reading said exclusivity with a proposed purchaser remained in place while the parties worked to resolve a security impasse connected with litigation. The club said a proposal for alternative security had been made to Couhig’s representatives to help facilitate the sale. It also said Dai Yongge had to divest his interests following his director disqualification.
