The production total was 503 vehicles higher than deliveries, leaving a difference that can reflect inventory, vehicles in transit or other timing effects. Rivian’s release did not provide a model-by-model explanation.
How much of the record came from the R2?
There is no verified R2 unit count in the cited Q3 update. It would be incorrect to treat all 19,248 deliveries as R2s or to estimate the R2 total by subtracting older models without a company breakdown.

Rivian began external R2 deliveries on June 9, 2026. That makes Q3 the first complete quarter in which customers could receive the midsize electric SUV, so the launch coincided with the record. The available figures establish timing, not how much the R2 caused the increase.

Those dates describe Rivian’s announced rollout, not a guarantee that every reservation holder will receive a vehicle on the same date. Availability, configuration and region can affect timing.

Rivian’s reaffirmed 65,000–70,000 delivery guidance implies that the company still expects substantial volume in the remaining quarters of 2026. A single record quarter does not establish that the full-year target will be met, because deliveries can vary with production, logistics, demand, configuration mix and launch execution.

The company’s Q2 2026 earnings release described R2 as a potential long-term growth and profitability driver. CEO RJ Scaringe said, “This quarter we began external deliveries of R2. I believe R2 will be a game changer for our customers and a driver of Rivian’s long-term growth and profitability.” That is management’s outlook, not reported evidence of R2 profitability or a disclosed contribution to Q3 deliveries.
