Deliveries and production measure different things: production counts vehicles made during the quarter, while deliveries count vehicles handed over. Production exceeded deliveries by 5,971 vehicles. That difference does not, by itself, establish how many vehicles were finished and waiting for customer handoff; the reported sources do not break down the gap or its causes.
Why did Rivian expect a difficult start?
Before the quarter, Rivian said it expected a challenging opening to 2025. As reported by TechCrunch, the company cited a difficult demand environment, partly driven by the Los Angeles fires, and seasonal weakness early in the year. What was Rivian’s 2025 delivery forecast?
Rivian maintained its forecast of 46,000 to 51,000 deliveries for full-year 2025, according to TechCrunch’s April 2, 2025 report. That range was the company’s estimate at the time—not current guidance or a guarantee. Rivian’s later outlooks illustrate why a dated forecast should not be treated as a lasting target: company guidance is forward-looking and subject to risks and uncertainties.

How did deliveries change after Q1 2025?
Later reports show that Rivian’s quarterly delivery figures changed substantially. These results span different quarters and operating conditions; they should not be read as a like-for-like comparison of the Q1 2025 shortfall with the latest quarter.

The Q2 2026 results release also said external deliveries of Rivian’s R2 began June 9, 2026. CEO RJ Scaringe called R2 a potential driver of the company’s long-term growth and profitability in a company statement.
