In its April 13, 2026 outlook, CRISIL Intelligence forecast margins would decline 150–200 basis points year over year to 16–18%. Producers’ ability to raise prices, control costs and benefit from demand will shape company results—and share prices will also reflect expectations and valuations.
Why fuel costs can pressure cement margins
Cement production uses energy-intensive kilns, and fuel also affects electricity generation and the movement of raw materials and finished cement. When coal, petcoke, power or diesel costs rise faster than the prices companies realize for cement, the difference can reduce operating profit per tonne and narrow margins.
CRISIL Intelligence’s April 2026 analysis put power and fuel at 26–28% of Indian cement makers’ total costs. It forecast that category would rise 10–12% year over year in FY2026–27, while total costs would rise 4–6%. These are forecasts, not reported sector results. Sehul Bhatt, director at CRISIL Intelligence, said geopolitical disruptions were expected to intensify cost pressures in the first half of the fiscal year, with energy prices and moderately higher raw-material and freight costs contributing to the increase.
Can cement makers pass higher fuel costs to customers?
They can try, but passing costs through is not automatic. CRISIL expected cement prices to rise 1–3% year over year, to Rs 355–360 per bag, and estimated that realization per player would improve 2–4%. Those gains were expected to offer some relief, not fully offset the projected rise in costs. CRISIL also cautioned that capacity additions and competition could constrain further price increases. Whether a price increase protects profitability depends on how much of it is actually realized across regions, products and sales channels, and how quickly it reaches customers. Motilal Oswal’s April sector note likewise identified elevated input costs and the sustainability of announced price hikes as important for earnings; that is time-bound analyst commentary, not an official sector forecast. What the forecasts imply—and what they do not
CRISIL’s expected 150–200-basis-point margin decline to 16–18% is a meaningful warning about near-term operating profitability in India’s cement sector. It is not a prediction that every producer’s margin will fall by the same amount, nor a stock-price target. Company exposure, cost controls, sales mix and price realization vary; investors’ returns also depend on what the market has already priced in, valuations and later results.

Demand is another variable. CRISIL forecast Indian cement-demand growth of 6.5–7.5% in FY2026–27. Ambuja Cements, in a May 2026 release, gave a softer expectation of about 5% industry-demand growth for FY2027, citing geopolitical challenges and an early forecast of below-normal monsoon conditions. How ACC and Ambuja described the pressure
ACC
ACC reported FY2026 operating EBITDA of Rs 2,950 crore and an operating EBITDA margin of 11.4%. It identified fuel, diesel, packaging supply constraints and rupee depreciation as headwinds it expected to persist into the first half of FY2027. The company described fuel-mix optimization, greater renewable-energy use, rail and sea logistics, and production and inventory discipline as cost-management measures. Ambuja Cements
Ambuja reported a Q4 FY2026 operating EBITDA margin of 13.4%. It cited fuel, diesel, packaging and currency pressures, and described fuel-mix changes, renewable energy, logistics improvements and operating discipline as responses. Its margin is for a quarter, while ACC’s 11.4% figure is for a full fiscal year; comparing them directly as a company ranking would be misleading. Ambuja Cements’ financial results and releases
How to compare cement companies on fuel-cost risk
A useful comparison should use the same reporting period and examine more than the headline margin. Relevant measures include:

- Fuel and power costs per tonne, and how those costs changed.
- Fuel mix, sourcing and any hedging or contractual protection.
- Realized cement prices, product mix and sales channels.
- Volume growth and exposure to regional demand.
- Freight, diesel and currency exposure.
- Cost-mitigation investment and its effect on operating costs.
- EBITDA per tonne, operating margin, capacity additions and financing costs.
The cited company releases do not provide a complete, same-period comparison across a defined group of producers. The disclosed numbers therefore show different snapshots, not enough to rank the sector by resilience.

Outside India, Vicat reported in its first-half 2026 results that energy costs increased 11.6%, largely because of higher volumes, and transport fuel costs increased 27.3% to €45 million. The company said hedging moderated energy-cost increases excluding volume effects, while price increases and contractual indexation offset much of the transport-fuel inflation. Amrize’s Q2 2026 presentation said fuel surcharges and pricing were expected to partially offset freight and diesel inflation, with second-half price-cost improvement expected. This is North American company guidance, not a forecast for India. Amrize quarterly results
Tokyo Cement’s FY2026/27 outlook described short-term margin pressure from fuel, energy, raw-material and freight costs in Sri Lanka. That is a separate market example, not evidence of Indian cement companies’ cost or margin outlook. Tokyo Cement investor relations
What investors should watch next
For an investment decision, the margin forecast is a starting point, not a complete stock call. Track whether input-cost increases persist, whether announced price hikes hold, and whether volume and demand support realization. In company results, compare like-for-like periods and look for fuel and power costs per tonne, EBITDA per tonne, margins, and evidence that mitigation efforts are reducing costs. Also consider valuation and expectations: a company can report margin pressure without its shares necessarily falling if investors already anticipated it, and a favorable operating outlook does not guarantee a stock gain.
The available evidence establishes an FY2026–27 risk forecast and company disclosures from April and May 2026; it does not establish October 2026 spot fuel prices, later FY2027 results or current valuation-based performance across a defined basket of Indian cement stocks. Forecasts can change as input prices, demand, monsoon conditions and realized prices evolve.
