How many Rio Tinto jobs were expected to go?
PerthNow reported an expected total of up to 500 potential job cuts in its 21 November 2016 article. Its account divided that estimate into more than 130 management and support roles potentially affected within two months, followed by up to another 350 in the new year. These were reported expectations, not a final tally confirmed by Rio Tinto. PerthNow’s report said a Rio spokesperson would not comment on the latest cuts.
ABC News reported on the same date that Rio had confirmed rolling reductions in its Western Australian iron-ore division but would not confirm a number. ABC said 500 jobs, or 4% of the workforce, were understood to be at risk; that figure was not company-confirmed. ABC News’ account quoted Rio describing market conditions as challenging and pointing to cost-cutting and productivity measures.
Which locations and roles did the 2016 report identify?
The reported effects spanned Rio Tinto’s Perth head office and its Pilbara mine, port and rail operations. PerthNow described the first group as management and support roles. It did not provide a detailed list of job titles or identify how many of the projected cuts would fall in each location or function.

Was Rio Tinto cutting jobs in 2026?
A separate PerthNow report published on 7 May 2026 discussed the possibility of further reductions in Rio’s Perth workforce. It attributed an estimate of more than 20% of Perth white-collar roles potentially affected to sources close to the company—not to a confirmed company total. CEO Simon Trott declined to specify the scale or duration of the changes. Trott said the company continued to make changes to its business, as it had in 2026, 2025 and 2024, to structure activities efficiently and effectively. That statement did not confirm the estimate or establish a specific number of jobs to be cut.

These are reports about different periods and should not be combined into one ongoing round of cuts. The 2016 coverage establishes that reductions were under way and records an expected number, but it does not establish the final number of jobs ultimately removed.
