Jamie Siminoff returned to Amazon in 2025 as a reported vice president of product overseeing Ring and related connected-home businesses. GeekWire reported that his remit included Ring, Blink, Amazon Key, and Amazon Sidewalk. Amazon confirmed his return in an April 4, 2025 interview, although the company’s interview did not specify the vice president title.
What Siminoff’s new Amazon role covers
Siminoff’s reported portfolio extends beyond Ring. According to GeekWire, he returned as a vice president of product with responsibility for:
- Ring: Video doorbells, cameras, alarms, lighting, and related home-security products.
- Blink: Amazon’s separate consumer security-camera brand.
- Amazon Key: Services and hardware designed to enable controlled delivery access, including in-garage delivery where available.
- Amazon Sidewalk: A neighborhood wireless network for compatible connected devices—not a camera or alarm product itself.
That breadth makes the move more significant than a simple return to the Ring brand. Siminoff is re-entering Amazon in a product leadership role spanning several parts of its connected-home ecosystem.
At the time of the appointment, Amazon’s Devices and Services organization was led by senior vice president Panos Panay, who joined Amazon in 2023 after a long career at Microsoft. Organizational reporting lines can change, so that should be treated as the structure reported around the appointment rather than a confirmed current chart.

Why the founder’s return matters
Siminoff founded Ring and served as its longtime chief executive before and after Amazon acquired the company. A founder returning to lead products associated with the original business can bring historical knowledge, product intuition, and familiarity with the problems the company initially set out to solve.
But Amazon’s home-security operation is now broader and more complex than the original startup. Siminoff’s role reportedly covers multiple brands, services, hardware categories, cloud products, and network infrastructure. His return therefore does not necessarily mean Ring will operate like an independent startup again.
Amazon’s own account describes Siminoff as an inventor and product leader closely associated with Ring’s mission. In a related interview, Siminoff said he viewed artificial intelligence as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity,” as reported by GeekWire. That establishes AI as part of the strategic discussion, but Amazon has not announced a specific AI roadmap, product, release date, or investment amount for his group in the supplied reporting.
From DoorBot to Ring
Siminoff developed the original connected video-doorbell concept after realizing he could not reliably see or hear visitors at his front door. Amazon says the early prototype was built in his garage. The product was initially known as DoorBot before being rebranded as Ring.

Siminoff appeared on Shark Tank in 2013 but did not secure a deal. The appearance nevertheless helped generate attention and sales. Amazon’s company history also says the Alexa Fund later supported Ring before the acquisition.
Amazon announced that its acquisition of Ring closed on April 12, 2018. The deal was widely described in the press as worth roughly $1 billion. Amazon’s 2018 annual report, however, recorded approximately $839 million in cash consideration, net of cash acquired. Those figures use different descriptions: the first is common transaction-value shorthand, while the second is Amazon’s accounting figure.
Amazon’s acquisition announcement and its 2018 annual report provide the underlying details.
Why did Siminoff leave?
Siminoff left Amazon in 2023, roughly five years after the Ring acquisition. In Amazon’s 2025 interview, he said he left to “take a breath and explore the world beyond Ring.” That is his explanation and should not be treated as proof of a particular internal dispute or restructuring.

The available reporting does not establish whether his departure resulted from a strategic disagreement, a personal decision, an organizational change, or another factor. It also does not indicate that Amazon fired him.
Elizabeth Hamren replaced him as Ring CEO in 2023, according to GeekWire. Hamren had previously held executive roles at companies including Discord and Meta. When Siminoff returned, GeekWire reported that Amazon described Hamren as considering opportunities inside and outside the company. That wording does not establish that she was fired, reassigned, or had left Amazon.
The privacy and security issue Amazon cannot avoid
Ring’s products handle sensitive information: video of homes and neighborhoods, household activity, account credentials, and data connected to physical access. That makes privacy and security central to any assessment of the business—not a side issue to a founder-comeback story.
In 2024, the Federal Trade Commission said it was distributing more than $5.6 million to Ring customers following a 2023 settlement. The FTC alleged that Ring failed to sufficiently restrict employee and contractor access to customer videos and failed to implement adequate security protections. The agency also said hackers had taken control of some accounts, cameras, and videos. It reported that 117,044 eligible consumers received PayPal payments.

These points describe the FTC’s allegations and enforcement action. They do not establish personal wrongdoing by Siminoff, and GeekWire reported that Amazon disputed the allegations associated with the settlement. Still, the history explains why future product decisions involving automation, cloud video, access control, and AI will be judged partly on trust and safeguards.
More capable AI could potentially improve camera alerts, video search, household automation, and the filtering of irrelevant activity. It could also increase the consequences of unauthorized access, excessive data retention, incorrect classifications, or opaque uses of household footage. No specific future Ring feature should be inferred from Siminoff’s general comments about AI.

The available sources confirm the 2025 return but do not independently verify every aspect of Siminoff’s status as of September 4, 2026. They do not establish:
- His exact start date.
- Whether he remains in the same role today.
- Whether he directly leads Ring or oversees it through another executive.
- Hamren’s subsequent position at Amazon.
- A detailed AI or connected-home product roadmap.
- Whether the role includes engineering, marketing, commercial responsibility, or only product leadership.
- Any current Ring, Blink, Key, or Sidewalk revenue, budget, headcount, or profitability figures.
- Any privacy-policy change specifically attributable to his return.
Accordingly, the most accurate description is that Amazon brought Siminoff back in April 2025 in a reported vice president of product role overseeing a broader home-security and connected-home portfolio. It is not supported to call him Ring’s current CEO or to present a specific AI launch as confirmed.

What this means for customers and investors
For customers, Siminoff’s return is not evidence that a Ring or Blink device is automatically the best security choice. Buyers still need to consider cloud dependence, subscription requirements, local-storage options, professional monitoring, regional availability, and comfort with internet-connected cameras.
Ring is most closely associated with Amazon’s Alexa-centered security ecosystem. Blink may appeal to people seeking a simpler camera setup, while Amazon Key and Sidewalk serve different functions: controlled delivery access and connected-device network infrastructure, respectively. Product capabilities and service terms vary by model, location, and plan.
For investors and personal-finance readers, Amazon does not separately disclose enough information in the supplied sources to evaluate Ring’s standalone revenue or profitability. The appointment is best understood as a leadership and product-strategy signal, not as proof of a specific financial outcome.
Bottom line
Jamie Siminoff’s return gives Amazon the founder of Ring back in a senior product role, but the assignment is broader than Ring itself. The opportunity is to combine founder-led product judgment with Amazon-scale execution across security, delivery access, and connected-home services. The test will be whether that strategy can improve usefulness and innovation while addressing the privacy and security risks inherent in putting cameras and automated analysis inside people’s homes.
