Rigetti Computing’s reported 28% workforce reduction was announced in February 2023—not a new 2026 layoff. The company said the move affected approximately 50 employees and was part of a revised business strategy and technology roadmap focused on nearer-term priorities.
When did Rigetti announce the layoffs?
Rigetti announced the workforce reduction in February 2023. In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2024, the company described the action as affecting approximately 50 employees, or approximately 28% of its workforce at the time. The percentage is historical; it does not describe Rigetti’s current workforce.
Rigetti’s 2023 Form 10-K also recounts the reduction. The reviewed later company and SEC materials do not establish that the 28% cut happened again in 2026.
Why did Rigetti reduce its workforce?
The company tied the reduction to an updated business strategy and revisions to its technology roadmap. It said it intended to direct resources toward nearer-term strategic priorities. The filings do not provide a more detailed employee-by-employee explanation or establish an industry-wide layoff trend.

What support and costs did Rigetti disclose?
Rigetti said affected employees were offered severance payments and temporary assistance with healthcare coverage. For the three months ended March 31, 2023, the company recorded a $1.0 million restructuring charge related to the action and said it expected no further charges for it.

Rigetti’s investor-relations page listed later 2026 announcements, including a September 8 item about a $100 million U.S. government agreement for superconducting quantum-computing research and development, an August 19 systems-delivery organization announcement, and second-quarter results. These updates describe later company activity; they are not evidence of a new workforce reduction.
Rank #2
The SEC’s September 8, 2026 Form 8-K filing index lists filing information and items, but an index alone does not establish every exhibit’s contents or prove that no separate staffing changes occurred. The available evidence therefore supports identifying the 28% figure as a 2023 event, not making a broader claim about all later staffing activity.
