Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Bruce Springsteen are among the musicians with the largest widely reported fortunes, but the available 2025 figures do not support a definitive ranking of every musician associated with the 20th century. Here, “20th-century musicians” means artists whose recording or performance careers began before 2001; the table includes only estimates the cited sources establish. These are estimates of net worth, not audited accounts, and the figures come from different source contexts.
2025 estimates for some of the richest musicians
Uproxx reported these figures in 2025, attributing them to Forbes estimates. They offer a useful snapshot, not a like-for-like or complete ranking of all musicians whose careers began in the 20th century.

These four estimates are reported together in Uproxx’s 2025 article on the richest musicians. The reviewed sources do not establish a complete 2025 ranking for all artists meeting the stated scope, so the figures should not be read as a comprehensive top four.
Why the figures are estimates, not precise balances
Net worth is generally a calculation of assets minus liabilities, but outsiders cannot see every private agreement, holding or debt behind a celebrity’s finances. Published estimates may use different methods and may include music rights, property, business stakes and other assets. They should not be treated as audited personal balance sheets or as directly comparable unless the publishers use a common method and date.

The distinction between individual and household wealth also matters. The Associated Press reported that the 2024 Sunday Times Rich List put the combined wealth of Paul McCartney and his wife, Nancy Shevell, at £1 billion, with £50 million of the estimate attributed to Shevell. That is a household figure, not an estimate of McCartney’s individual net worth. The AP report explains the attribution.
What contributes to musicians’ fortunes
Royalties, touring and music catalogs
Forbes’ profile of Taylor Swift estimates nearly $800 million from royalties and touring, a catalog worth about $600 million, and around $110 million in real estate. These are profile estimates, not independently audited balances; they illustrate how a fortune can combine ongoing income with the value of rights and property. Forbes’ Taylor Swift profile describes its estimates and components.
Rank #2
A catalog transaction is not itself the same as an artist’s total net worth. Forbes Australia reported that Springsteen sold his music catalog to Sony in 2021 for $500 million. That is the reported transaction value, not his current estimated net worth or a measure of touring income. Forbes Australia’s report discusses the sale.
Businesses beyond music
Forbes says Jay-Z has more than doubled his fortune since becoming hip-hop’s first billionaire in 2019, with growth attributed in part to liquor businesses. Its profile describes him as the world’s wealthiest musician, but a dynamic profile estimate may change; it should not be substituted for the specifically dated 2025 figure above. Forbes’ Jay-Z profile covers its estimate and reported wealth drivers.

How to interpret a musician net-worth ranking
- Check the scope: “20th-century musician” could refer to a birth date, career start or a historical list. This article uses career start before 2001, not birth year.
- Check the date and publisher: a current profile estimate and a figure reported in a 2025 article may differ because estimates move over time.
- Keep unlike figures separate: a catalog-sale price, annual earnings figure or combined household estimate is not interchangeable with an individual net-worth estimate.
- Compare cautiously: different estimates may count catalogs, property and outside businesses differently, so a precise ranking across publishers is not established here.
The difficulty is not unique to any one artist. Money.it notes that private agreements can make musicians’ fortunes difficult to calculate precisely. Its discussion of estimating musicians’ wealth underscores why rankings should be understood as informed estimates rather than exact disclosures.
