Richest football owners in England: what the $13.3bn Sheffield Wednesday claim gets wrong

Sheffield Wednesday’s May 2026 buyer was Arise Capital Partners, not Shahid Khan. His reported $13.3bn wealth estimate dates to January 2025, and available rankings do not establish a dependable top 12 across English football.

Sheffield Wednesday is not owned by Shahid Khan. The club completed a sale to Arise Capital Partners LLC in May 2026, while the $13.3 billion figure attached to Khan is a January 2025 estimate—not a current valuation or evidence that he was involved in Wednesday’s takeover. There is also no reliable, verified ranking here of the 12 richest owners across every English football division.

Who owns Sheffield Wednesday now?

Sheffield Wednesday completed its sale to Arise Capital Partners LLC in May 2026. The EFL identified the consortium as led by David Storch, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The EFL confirmed the ownership change on 2 May 2026 and said Wednesday was no longer regarded as being in administration following the transaction.

The BBC’s 2 May 2026 report also covered the transaction and the consortium. Neither source identifies Shahid Khan as a buyer. The EFL’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test applies to people seeking to own or control a club, and the league says it is applied to current and prospective owners on an ongoing basis.

Is Shahid Khan buying Sheffield Wednesday?

The available transaction confirmations do not support that claim. Khan is associated with Fulham: Norton Rose Fulbright’s 2025 Premier League ownership report identifies him in its 2024/25-season ownership snapshot. That historical snapshot is not a confirmation of Wednesday ownership, nor does it by itself establish Fulham’s ownership status in October 2026.

How much is Shahid Khan worth?

A Shahid Khan biography page reports an estimate of $13.3 billion as of January 2025 and attributes the figure to Forbes. It is a dated estimate reproduced by a secondary source, not an audited statement of Khan’s wealth or a verified figure for October 2026. It should not be presented as his current net worth without a current, attributable valuation.

Who are the 12 richest football owners in England?

A definitive, current top 12 across English football is not established by the available figures. The May 2026 1BoxOffice article is limited to 2025/26 Premier League clubs; it does not cover every English division. It also combines estimates for individuals and collective ownership groups, and acknowledges that estimating wealth is difficult. Those are not equivalent units: a single person’s net worth cannot be fairly compared with a sum for several owners, a family, an investment entity or a fund.

The article’s own figures and ordering also contain visible inconsistencies. Its summary gives Newcastle United’s owners a combined estimate of £723.3 billion, an exceptionally large figure that is not independently validated here. It lists Leeds United at £5.2 billion in its contents but £6.4 billion in its table; its contents also place Liverpool below Leeds despite listing a higher value for Liverpool. These discrepancies make the page unsuitable as a settled ranking of the richest owners.

Norton Rose Fulbright’s 2025 report is useful for a different question: who were the majority owners of Premier League clubs in the 2024/25 season, and what ownership categories, nationalities and acquisition years were publicly recorded? Its table drew on Companies House information and club disclosures available at the report date. It is an ownership snapshot, not a current wealth league table, and a majority-owner listing is not the same as a full inventory of every investor.

Why football-owner wealth rankings are hard to compare

“Richest owner” can refer to very different things. Before comparing any ranking, check what it counts and when the estimate was made:

  • Scope: A list of Premier League owners does not rank owners across the Championship, League One, League Two or non-league football.
  • Who is being valued: An individual’s net worth, a family’s wealth, a consortium’s combined assets and a fund’s assets under management are different measures.
  • Ownership role: A majority owner, minority investor, consortium member and holding company are not interchangeable. An ownership snapshot may identify only the majority owner.
  • Date and method: Wealth estimates change and depend on what assets and liabilities are counted. An estimate from January 2025 should retain that date when quoted.
  • Club value versus owner wealth: A club’s estimated value is not the owner’s personal net worth. Owning a stake does not mean owning the whole value outright.

For a current ownership claim, prefer a league or club announcement confirming a completed transaction. For a wealth comparison, use a named estimator, state its date and methodology, and keep individuals separate from collective groups. Without those distinctions, a numbered list can look precise while comparing unlike figures.

What the $13.3bn headline actually establishes

It connects a dated estimate attributed to Khan with a separate Sheffield Wednesday ownership story. The estimate does not make him Wednesday’s buyer, and the completed transaction points instead to Arise Capital Partners LLC. The available material supports neither a current October 2026 valuation for Khan nor a reliable top-12 ranking spanning the English football pyramid.
