Richard Yu became chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group (Consumer BG) in a personnel change reported on April 30, 2024. He Gang, then the group’s chief operating officer, took over as CEO. Huawei’s current executive profile and its 2025 annual report list Yu as Consumer BG chairman; contemporaneous reporting described the chairmanship as a newly created role.
What changed at Huawei in April 2024?
The Paper reported that Huawei circulated an internal personnel adjustment dated April 30, 2024: Yu Chengdong, known internationally as Richard Yu, would leave the Consumer BG CEO position and become the group’s chairman. He Gang, previously the group’s COO, would become CEO. The Paper said Huawei confirmed the change to its reporter. The Paper’s April 30 report described the chairmanship as a newly established position.
The South China Morning Post also reported the transition on May 1, 2024, citing a local report and sources. It said Huawei declined to comment at that time and likewise characterized the chairmanship as a new role. SCMP’s report provides contemporaneous coverage, but the appointment details should be distinguished from Huawei’s later official title listings.
Who became Consumer BG CEO?
He Gang succeeded Yu as CEO. He had been Consumer BG COO, making the transition a change in the group’s executive leadership rather than Yu leaving Huawei. Yu’s move was to the chairman position within the same business group.

Is Richard Yu Huawei’s “first chairman”?
Contemporaneous reports called the Consumer BG chairmanship a newly created role, which supports describing Yu as its first chairman. Huawei’s current executive biography confirms his title as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Consumer BG, but does not itself call him the “first” chairman. Huawei’s executive biography lists his current positions; Huawei’s 2025 annual report also records him as Consumer BG chairman.
What does the chairman title mean in this case?
Yu’s Consumer BG chairmanship is a business-group position. It is not the same as chairing Huawei Technologies’ company-wide Board of Directors or holding the company’s rotating/acting chairmanship. Huawei describes its corporate Board of Directors as the highest body responsible for corporate strategy and operations management, and lists Yu’s Consumer BG role separately from Huawei’s company-level governance positions. Huawei’s corporate governance page explains the company Board’s remit.

Why did Yu move from CEO to chairman?
The Paper reported that the change was intended to give Yu more time to focus on consumer products. That explanation came from an unnamed source, not a named Huawei executive or an on-record public statement from the company, so it is best treated as reported context rather than an officially confirmed rationale. The Paper’s report is the source for that account.
Yu Chengdong’s Huawei career
Huawei says Yu was born in 1969, holds a master’s degree from Tsinghua University, and joined the company in 1993. His listed career includes roles in 3G products, wireless technical sales and product leadership, European-area leadership, strategy and marketing, and Consumer BG leadership. Huawei’s executive biography provides the company’s account of his background.
