The most widely cited contemporary estimate put Richard Burton’s estate at $4.58 million, according to a November 18, 1984, United Press International report relaying a Sunday Mirror account. Later reports gave separate figures for proceedings in Bermuda and Britain. They refer to different dates and jurisdictions, and the available reporting does not reconcile them into one final probate total or establish a modern net-worth figure.
What was Richard Burton’s net worth when he died?
Burton died on August 5, 1984. The best-known figure published soon afterward was a reported estate of $4.58 million. UPI attributed it to the Sunday Mirror, which said it had consulted estate auditors; UPI did not reproduce an audited statement. UPI’s November 18, 1984 report therefore supports describing this as a contemporary newspaper-reported estate estimate—not as a verified, consolidated accounting of everything Burton owned.

The report attributed these components to the newspaper’s account:
- More than $2 million in a Bermuda bank
- $1 million in property
- Nearly $100,000 in investments
- About $380,000 in art and personal effects
- $20,000 in film residuals
These were reported categories and amounts, not a separately audited balance sheet in the UPI article. They should not be treated as a precise reconciliation of the $4.58 million headline figure.

Why do later reports give different estate figures?
Subsequent coverage concerned particular wills and jurisdictions. The amounts have different currencies and reporting contexts, so they are not interchangeable with one another or with the 1984 headline estimate.
| Publication and date | Jurisdiction or context | Reported figure | What the report says |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI, November 18, 1984 | Newspaper-reported estate estimate | $4.58 million | UPI relayed the Sunday Mirror’s account, attributed to estate auditors; it was not a reproduced consolidated accounting. |
| UPI, March 1985 | Bermuda will and court settlement | $2.7 million | The Bermuda Supreme Court settled the estate in March 1985; UPI said the bulk went to Sally Burton and reported bequests to daughters and other beneficiaries. |
| Los Angeles Times, May 1985, reporting from UPI | British will | £675,000 (about $845,000) | The report described the value shown in the British will and separate provisions for daughters and other beneficiaries. |
The later figures do not establish that the 1984 estimate was revised, nor do the reports explain how the Bermuda and British amounts relate to the earlier figure. Do not add them together or present one as an inflation update of another: the sources do not provide the accounting needed to support either interpretation. UPI’s Bermuda report and the Los Angeles Times report on the British will describe distinct proceedings.

Who inherited from Richard Burton?
The reports describe different wills rather than one complete, reconciled distribution of all assets.
- 1984 newspaper account: The Sunday Mirror report relayed by UPI said the bulk of the reported estate went to Burton’s widow, Sally Burton, while his daughters and siblings received bequests. The same account attributed to Sally Burton the statement, “Everyone seems to be under the impression I am penniless. But that is not so.” UPI said it could not reach her for confirmation and attributed the quotation to the newspaper. The report also mentioned a missing Picasso sketch that Sally Burton said she was happy to leave with Elizabeth Taylor, and a Dylan Thomas manuscript auditors reportedly could not find. These details remain claims in that newspaper account. Read UPI’s account.
- Bermuda will: UPI’s March 1985 report said the bulk of the $2.7 million estate went to Sally Burton and listed allocations to daughters Katherine, Jessica, and Maria. It said Elizabeth Taylor was not included in that will. Read UPI’s Bermuda report.
- British will: The Los Angeles Times’ May 1985 report, sourced to UPI, gave a value of £675,000 (about $845,000) and described separate percentages for the daughters under prior agreements, alongside other bequests. Read the Los Angeles Times report.
Is there a reliable current-dollar or present-day net-worth estimate?
The cited reports do not establish either a documented inflation-adjusted equivalent or Burton’s present-day net worth. An inflation calculation could convert a stated historical amount into an estimate of purchasing power, but it would not resolve what the historical figure covered, reconcile the jurisdictions, or create a new valuation of the estate. No current estimate should be presented as if it were a probate figure supported by these reports.

What is established about the date and place of his death?
The National Museum Wales records that Burton died on August 5, 1984, at his home in Céligny, Switzerland, from a cerebral haemorrhage. National Museum Wales: Richard Burton (1925–1984). Swansea University Archives describes a Richard Burton Collection containing diaries, correspondence, photographs, scripts, press cuttings, recordings, a personal library, and other materials; its catalogue description provides archival context but does not establish an estate value.
