Rheinmetall reported two Canadian Army orders worth about €87 million combined: roughly €70 million for C16 automatic grenade launchers and ammunition, and about €17 million to modernize 42 Leopard 2A4 tanks acquired from the Netherlands. The announcement set delivery targets for early 2012; it does not independently confirm whether those targets were met.

It was also assigned spare-parts provision, servicing, and maintenance of the C16 during military operations.
What was planned for the 42 Leopard 2A4 tanks?
The second order covered modernization and overhaul of 42 Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks Canada had acquired from the Dutch armed forces. How does this differ from later Canadian Leopard contracts?
Canada’s subsequent Leopard-related contracts were distinct procurements, not extensions or repeats established by the 2010 announcement.
2024 fleet sustainment contract
In September 2024, Public Services and Procurement Canada announced that KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG had received the Leopard 2 Family of Vehicles long-term sustainment contract. The announcement described an initial term of six years and seven months, four option periods that could extend the contract to March 2036, and an estimated value of CAD 2 billion including taxes. The work includes program management, maintenance, technical services, supply support, and engineering support.

2025 LEOBEN engineering services
A separate CanadaBuys contract record lists a 2025 contract with Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH valued at CAD 471,382.88 for Canada’s share of technical investigations and engineering services in LEOBEN working groups. The work concerns cooperation among Leopard users on joint logistics and in-service development, including keeping configurations uniform and carrying out technical changes. It is not the 2010 order to modernize 42 Canadian Leopard 2A4s.
