French startup INGA sells washable alternatives to disposable household cleaning products, including reusable paper towels and sponges. The figures attached to the original headline need a qualification: a 2024 Daily Galaxy article reported that France uses 140 billion paper-towel sheets and 350 million sponges annually, but its 62-billion figure was for makeup-removal pads—not cotton swabs. The article did not identify the underlying data source, so those totals should be treated as reported figures, not independently verified national statistics.
What does INGA sell?
INGA’s official catalog includes washable sponges, reusable paper towels, microfiber cleaning products, and other washable household goods. Its catalog shows the product categories, while its magnetic sponge page describes a sponge used with a magnetic holder that can be machine washed. These are the company’s product descriptions, not independent performance tests.
The fit with the disposable-waste problem is clearest for kitchen sponges and paper towels: they are reusable versions of two products named in the France figures. The figures do not establish a cotton-swab statistic, and INGA’s cited product range does not make cotton swabs the basis for its answer.
What do the France waste figures establish?
Daily Galaxy reported the following annual France figures in 2024. The article did not identify an underlying primary source in the material reviewed, so the numbers are best understood as figures reported by that publication rather than verified national measurements.

| Disposable item | Figure reported for France | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Paper-towel sheets | 140 billion per year | Reported by Daily Galaxy in 2024; underlying primary source not identified. |
| Sponges | 350 million per year | Reported by Daily Galaxy in 2024; underlying primary source not identified. |
| Makeup-removal pads | 62 billion per year | Reported by Daily Galaxy in 2024; this is not a cotton-swab figure. |
Because the figures are France-specific and their underlying source is not identified, they should not be generalized to other countries or treated as precise, independently confirmed totals.
How to decide whether reusable alternatives make financial sense
A reusable item saves money only if its purchase price is offset by the disposable products it actually replaces, after accounting for its useful life and care. Compare products on practical details rather than assuming that “reusable” automatically means cheaper or lower-impact.

- Microfiber 16 x 12-inch cleaning cloth (24-pack); ideal for cleaning cars, trucks, boats, and more
- Ultra-soft and non-abrasive car drying towels; will not scratch paints, vinyl, glass, finishes, or other surfaces
- Effectively cleans either dry or with liquid cleaners for streak-free results and a lint-free shine
- Durable and absorbent; soak up 8 times their own weight
- Can be reused hundreds of times
- Function and absorbency: Check whether the item suits the spills and surfaces for which you would otherwise use a paper towel or sponge.
- Washing instructions: Confirm how it should be cleaned, whether machine washing is allowed, and how often it is likely to need laundering.
- Expected lifespan and warranty: Look for a stated lifespan or warranty; do not assume one if the seller does not provide it.
- Materials and disposal: Consider what the product is made from and how it can be disposed of at the end of its life.
- Cost versus actual replacement: Compare the upfront cost with the number of disposable items you expect to stop buying, rather than with an assumed household-wide total.
For environmental impact, the relevant comparison also depends on the reusable product’s lifetime, material composition, laundering, and end-of-life route. No independent life-cycle assessment was established for INGA’s products. The company publishes its own estimates, but those are vendor claims rather than independently demonstrated results.

INGA says its magnetic sponge dries about twice as quickly as a disposable sponge. That is the company’s comparison; the available product information does not establish an independent test or provide enough methodology to treat the result as independently verified.
