AI is replacing parts of coding work, not proving that software engineers are obsolete. Today’s coding agents can generate code, edit repositories, run tests and open pull requests. They still cannot reliably decide what a business should build, recognize every hidden constraint, secure a production system or accept accountability when it fails.

That distinction matters to workers, managers and investors. A company may need fewer people paid mainly to type routine code, while needing more value from engineers who specify, review, test, operate and own software. As of August 18, 2026, the evidence supports AI-assisted engineering—not wholesale replacement of professional developers.

The question is not whether AI can write code

A model can produce a working endpoint in minutes. It may not know whether that endpoint violates a data contract, exposes another customer’s records, breaks an older client, creates a race condition or makes an incident harder to diagnose.

“Replacing coders” can mean several different things:

  • App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
  • Replacing keystrokes: generating syntax, boilerplate and routine edits instead of typing them manually. This is already common.
  • Replacing routine tasks: drafting tests, documentation, migrations, scripts, CRUD endpoints and simple integrations.
  • Reducing headcount: allowing a team to deliver a project with fewer developers. This is plausible for some products and tasks.
  • Eliminating professional software engineers: removing the need for people who make technical decisions and take responsibility for outcomes. Current evidence does not establish this.

The easier code becomes to generate, the more important it becomes to know which code should exist and whether it can safely be trusted.

What Gates, Altman and the original argument actually establish

Coverage has attributed different positions to Bill Gates and Sam Altman: that AI will not simply eliminate programmers, and that it could make coders dramatically more productive rather than replace them. The available material does not provide a sufficiently direct transcript or original post to verify the exact wording, date or context of either claim. The reports should therefore be treated as secondary attribution, not as established quotations.

The original VentureBeat article, published October 4, 2025, describes a practical concern: reviewing and correcting complex generated code can take longer than writing a smaller change directly, especially when the system contains proprietary business logic. That is a useful hypothesis and personal observation, not a controlled measurement. Read the VentureBeat article.

Celebrity opinions cannot settle a labor-market question. The stronger case comes from what tools can do, where they fail, and how software work is measured.

What current AI coding tools do well

Modern assistants are considerably more than autocomplete. Microsoft describes Copilot use cases including generating examples, explaining logic, improving existing code and debugging. GitHub documents editor assistance and agents that inspect repositories, make multi-file edits, run tests and produce pull requests.

High-confidence uses include:

  • Boilerplate, CRUD handlers and repetitive transformations.
  • Unit-test drafts and test-case expansion.
  • Small, well-specified bug fixes where tests express the intended behavior.
  • Mechanical refactoring and language translation.
  • Repository search, code explanation and documentation.
  • Scripts, data cleanup and one-off internal automations.
  • Prototype applications and examples.
  • Pull-request summaries and draft changes.

GitHub’s agent workflow explicitly keeps a developer in the loop: a person selects the task, supplies context, reviews changes and decides what is merged. GitHub Copilot overview · editor capabilities · agent capabilities.

Where generated code becomes expensive

Generated code can be plausible and still be wrong. GitHub warns that Copilot may reproduce insecure patterns, bugs, outdated APIs and undesirable idioms, and recommends testing, review, security tooling and human judgment. GitHub’s limitations and plan guidance.

The costly failures are often contextual:

  • Assuming an undocumented requirement that is false.
  • Inventing a package, API, command-line flag or configuration option.
  • Passing superficial tests while failing in production.
  • Implementing incorrect authorization or data isolation.
  • Introducing race conditions or distributed-systems failures.
  • Breaking compatibility in a legacy system.
  • Leaving incomplete migrations, weak observability or unsafe rollback paths.
  • Adding dependencies with supply-chain, licensing or maintenance risk.
  • Generating tests that merely reproduce the implementation’s mistake.
  • Expanding the codebase and review surface without increasing customer value.

An agent can execute a plan. It does not guarantee that the plan reflects the business, legal, security or operational reality around the software.

Experience is judgment, not typing speed

Senior engineers are valuable because they can decompose an ambiguous problem, identify hidden risk and reject an attractive but unsafe implementation. Their work includes:

  • Discovering requirements that were never written down.
  • Choosing architecture and making trade-offs among cost, speed, reliability and maintainability.
  • Recognizing failure patterns from previous incidents.
  • Designing security boundaries and data-handling rules.
  • Debugging under uncertainty across services, databases and infrastructure.
  • Coordinating with product, legal, compliance, operations and customers.
  • Deciding whether a migration is reversible and how to recover when it is not.
  • Owning the result after deployment.

Repository context, retrieval and tool access can give an AI system more information. They do not ensure that it notices the decisive information or understands why an apparently obvious change was rejected years earlier.

What the evidence says about productivity

The METR study is a warning, not a universal verdict

An early-2025 randomized METR study of 16 experienced open-source developers found that participants using the then-current AI tools took longer on the study tasks, even though they believed they had been faster. The result supports two conclusions: experienced developers can misjudge AI’s effect on their speed, and complex repository work carries substantial context and verification costs.

It does not prove that every AI tool makes developers slower. The sample was small, the tasks and tools were specific, and newer agents may behave differently. The study does not establish results for novices, greenfield projects, simpler work or tightly controlled enterprise environments. Read the METR paper.

Adoption is not replacement

JetBrains’ 2024 Developer Ecosystem survey, conducted in May and June 2024, reported that 69% had tried ChatGPT for coding-related activities and 49% used it regularly. Forty percent had tried GitHub Copilot and 26% used it regularly. Almost 80% of organizations either allowed third-party cloud AI tools to some extent or had no established policy, while 11% completely prohibited them.

These are survey responses, not a census of developers or proof of net productivity. They also predate the current generation of agents. See the JetBrains survey.

Vendor capability claims need independent measurement

GitHub’s product pages demonstrate an intended human-plus-agent workflow. They do not independently prove that a particular team ships safer software faster. Measure outcomes, not activity.

Why lines of code are a bad business metric

Ten thousand generated lines can mean ten thousand lines a team must review, secure, operate and eventually replace. Commits, files and agent messages are activity measures, not customer value.

More useful measures include:

  • Time from an issue to a safely deployed change.
  • Review time and percentage of changes requiring substantial rework.
  • Defect, rollback and change-failure rates.
  • Security findings and incidents involving generated changes.
  • Mean time to recovery.
  • Maintenance cost and customer impact.
  • Cost per accepted feature, including model usage and review.
  • Developer satisfaction and ability to retain experienced staff.

Where AI may reduce headcount or reshape hiring

Rejecting total replacement does not mean dismissing economic disruption. Routine implementation work is the easiest to automate, particularly in small products, prototypes, internal tools and well-tested systems. Some teams may deliver the same scope with fewer developers, or expect each engineer to supervise more agents.

The risk is especially serious for the junior pipeline. Entry-level developers traditionally learn through small fixes, tests, documentation and maintenance. If those tasks disappear, new engineers may be expected to supervise AI before they understand software fundamentals. A short-term reduction in junior hiring could create a long-term shortage of people with the experience needed for architecture, security and operations.

That is a labor-market risk, not a proven universal outcome. Claims about a specific percentage of programming jobs already lost require authoritative data defining the country, occupation and period.

AI’s total cost is more than a subscription

A finance-minded comparison should include review, testing, security, governance, incidents, training and vendor dependence—not just an AI license.

For example, GitHub’s documentation lists Copilot Business at $19 per user per month and Enterprise at $39 per user per month. It lists 1,900 and 3,900 AI credits per user per month respectively, with additional usage at $0.01 per credit; code completions and next-edit suggestions are not billed in credits on paid plans. Long agent sessions using frontier models cost more than short lightweight interactions. The relevant comparison is the cost per successful, supportable change—not the cost per generated line.

A safer adoption framework

Work type AI role Human requirement
Boilerplate Generate Review and test
Tests Draft and expand Validate behavior and coverage
Refactoring Propose multi-file changes Check compatibility and performance
Security-sensitive code Assist only Expert review and security testing
Architecture Explore alternatives Human decision and ownership
Production incidents Summarize and suggest Human diagnosis and command
Safety-critical systems Limited assistance Specialized approval and controls

Start with bounded work

Good first candidates have clear requirements, strong tests, low blast radius and easy rollback. Avoid beginning with authentication, payments, safety-critical behavior, compliance-sensitive data flows, irreversible migrations, security boundaries or poorly documented core algorithms.

Require controls

  • Human review and clear ownership.
  • Automated tests, static analysis and dependency scanning.
  • Secret scanning, license and provenance review.
  • Sandboxed execution and audit logs.
  • Production monitoring and rollback plans.
  • A policy for confidential code, prompts and data residency.

The practical conclusion for workers and companies

The likely future is not “no coders.” It is fewer people paid mainly to type routine code, and more people expected to direct, verify, secure and own systems built with AI.

Workers should build durable skills in requirements, architecture, testing, security, operations and communication—not merely learn to produce more code. Companies should buy AI tools to reduce toil and accelerate bounded work, while preserving the people who can decide whether the resulting software is correct.
