The move made Dell’s naming look more Apple-like, especially through “Pro” and “Pro Max,” but Dell said its goal was simpler, unified branding—not copying Apple.
The story is more complicated in 2026: Dell’s U.S. store again lists XPS 13, XPS 14 and XPS 16 laptops. “Dell killed XPS” describes the direction of the January 2025 launch, not the company’s current U.S. lineup.
What Dell actually announced
On January 6, 2025, Dell announced a portfolio-wide naming system intended to put the Dell name ahead of separate consumer, business and workstation brands. Its three headline categories were:
| Category | Dell’s stated audience | Typical role |
|---|---|---|
| Dell | Play, school and work | Mainstream consumer computers |
| Dell Pro | Professional-grade productivity | Business laptops and desktops |
| Dell Pro Max | Maximum performance | Workstations and high-performance systems |
Those were portfolio categories, not three individual models. Dell also added descriptors such as Base, Plus and Premium. A product could therefore be called Dell Pro Premium or Dell Pro Max Plus, leaving a hierarchy that was less simple than the three-category summary suggested. Dell explains the portfolio in its portfolio overview.

What happened to XPS, Inspiron, Latitude, OptiPlex and Precision?
Dell presented the change as a move away from standalone family names. Contemporary launch coverage mapped the old families into the new structure, but Dell did not establish that every trademark had been permanently cancelled.
| Legacy family | Broad 2025 positioning | What that means for shoppers |
|---|---|---|
| XPS | Dell Premium consumer systems | Premium consumer hardware was initially labeled under Dell Premium. |
| Inspiron | Dell and Dell Plus | Mainstream consumer systems moved into the regular Dell tiers. |
| Latitude | Dell Pro | Business productivity systems were placed under Dell Pro. |
| Precision | Dell Pro Max | Workstation-oriented products moved into the performance category. |
| OptiPlex | Dell Pro or Dell Pro Max desktops | Business and higher-performance desktops used the new categories. |
This is a practical translation of Dell’s launch materials and contemporaneous reporting, not proof that each old name was legally discontinued. The January announcement is documented in Dell’s press release and Engadget’s January 7, 2025 report.
Why the Apple comparison is reasonable—and limited
Apple uses hierarchy terms such as MacBook Pro and iPhone Pro Max. Dell adopted Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max, while placing its corporate name at the front of most products. That makes the comparison understandable: both companies use a centralized master brand with tier labels.
But Dell did not publicly say it was copying Apple. Its stated rationale was easier choices, consistent branding across PCs, displays, accessories and services, and better discoverability for AI PCs. Dell cited research claiming that 74% of consumers had abandoned technology purchases because they felt overwhelmed; that is a Dell-cited statistic, not independent proof of the problem’s size.

- Ergonomic support: Keep your wrists comfortable with lifted hinges that provide an ergonomic typing angle.
The fairest conclusion is that the names and architecture evoke Apple, while Dell’s verified explanation was simplification and portfolio consistency.
Did the rebrand change the hardware?
The change was primarily brand architecture and portfolio organization, accompanied by new 2025 systems. Dell launched consumer Dell models, Dell Pro business laptops and desktops, and Dell Pro Max performance systems using Intel, AMD and Qualcomm platforms. The company tied the products to on-device AI features and tools such as Dell Pro AI Studio.
A new label does not guarantee a new chassis or a particular performance level. Some premium consumer systems associated with XPS looked largely unchanged despite the new naming. Buyers should separate four questions:
- Brand architecture: what the computer is called.
- Product generation: its processor, display, chassis and AI hardware.
- Commercial position: consumer, business or workstation use.
- Availability: when that exact configuration went on sale.
Launch examples and manufacturer claims
Engadget reported that Dell Pro 13 and Dell Pro 14 Premium models were available at launch. Dell 14 Plus and Dell 16 Plus, including 2-in-1 versions, were scheduled for February 18, 2025, starting at $999 in U.S. launch coverage. Dell Pro Max 14 and 16 were expected in March 2025, with pricing initially unavailable.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Launch coverage described the Dell Pro Premium 13 as approximately 2.36 pounds, with a claimed 21.2-hour battery life and an 82% graphics-rendering improvement over Dell’s previous premium enterprise-focused system. These are configuration-dependent manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Dell also described the Dell Pro Premium 14 as the first commercial notebook with a tandem OLED display.
Why the “simpler” system can still be confusing
Dell’s stated objective was to reduce the number of names shoppers must remember. That can help someone begin with a broad need—general use, business productivity or maximum performance. It can also help companies organize procurement across computers, displays and services.
However, Base, Plus and Premium tiers reintroduce several levels. “Pro Max Plus” combines two terms that already imply a high tier, while names such as Dell Pro Max Micro and Dell Pro Max Mini can be less intuitive than the former desktop families. Long-standing labels also carried useful shorthand: buyers often knew that Latitude meant business or Precision meant workstation. Removing that shorthand can make comparisons harder until the new system becomes familiar.
XPS is back in Dell’s current U.S. store
At the January 2025 launch, premium consumer systems formerly associated with XPS were positioned under Dell Premium. Engadget described that direction as the effective death of XPS.

As of August 18, 2026, Dell’s U.S. store lists new XPS 13, XPS 14 and XPS 16 laptops. Dell’s product pages distinguish “XPS (2025)” from “the new XPS,” showing that XPS branding was restored or retained in the later portfolio. The available evidence does not establish whether this was a formal reversal, coexistence strategy or market-specific decision.

For everyday users
Start with operating system edition, display, battery life, weight, ports, repairability, graphics and total price. Do not assume “Pro” or “Pro Max” automatically means better value. Mainstream Dell laptops are aimed at school, home and ordinary work; see Dell’s consumer buying page.
For business buyers
Check Windows edition, manageability, Intel vPro availability, docking, warranty, deployment support and service terms for the exact SKU. A Dell Pro model is not automatically an identical replacement for a former Latitude. Dell lists business systems at its Dell Pro buying page.
For workstation workloads
For engineering, graphics and professional applications, compare GPU certification, memory capacity, thermal design, ISV certification and support. A high-end Dell Pro Max laptop may still be a poor desktop-workstation substitute. Dell exposes relevant systems through its Dell Pro Max and Precision page.

For existing owners
The rebrand does not invalidate a device, warranty or support entitlement. Search drivers and support by service tag or exact model number, not only by family name. A new Dell Premium or Dell Pro model is not necessarily a one-for-one successor to a particular XPS, Inspiron or Latitude.
What the 2026 prices tell you
Dell’s U.S. listings observed in August 2026 illustrate the spread, but these were configuration-specific promotional prices rather than permanent MSRP:
| Example | Observed price signal | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Dell Pro 14 | $1,170.46 | Discounted U.S. configuration observed on Dell’s store. |
| Dell Pro Max 16 | $2,460.32 | Discounted U.S. configuration observed on Dell’s store. |
| Dell Pro Max 14 | $3,015.84 | One U.S. configuration observed. |
| XPS 13 | From $699.99 | Observed U.S. listing; promotions and configurations varied. |
| XPS 14 | From $1,639.99 | Observed U.S. listing; promotions and configurations varied. |
| XPS 16 | From $1,699.99 | Observed U.S. listing; promotions and configurations varied. |
Prices differ by country, configuration, inventory and sales. Compare exact specifications rather than assuming that a higher category is a better purchase for your workload.
Verdict
Dell really did consolidate its PC branding in January 2025, and “Dell Pro” and “Dell Pro Max” deliberately resemble the tier language shoppers associate with Apple. The company’s documented rationale, however, was unified branding, easier choices and AI-PC positioning—not an admission that it copied Apple.
The rebrand changed how products were organized more reliably than it changed every piece of hardware. And because Dell’s U.S. store again sells XPS laptops in 2026, “Dell dumps its PC brands” is now a historical description of the launch—not a complete description of Dell’s current lineup.
