The most defensible used-luxury shortlist is a set of model years with above-average reliability evidence—not a verified list of ten bargains. Consumer Reports’ 2026 used-car guide highlights specific years of the Lexus ES, Acura RDX, Audi A4, and BMW 3 Series. That is a useful place to start, but it does not establish today’s asking prices or prove that any individual car is worth buying.
Which used luxury cars are reliable?
Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide identifies the following model-year candidates as having above-average reliability. Its published year entries support a shortlist, not a ranking of the best values or a guarantee for every car of that year. Check the guide’s underlying entries when comparing a particular model year.

Calling a car a bargain requires a price comparison. The available evidence does not establish ten current model-and-price matches or local asking prices, so it cannot support a nationwide top-ten ranking—or show that any of these cars is cheap relative to comparable listings in your area.

Reliability evidence can help narrow a search, but it does not tell you whether a listing is fairly priced. Compare the asking price with local cars of the same year and similar mileage, then account for condition, maintenance records, inspection findings, and repairs likely to be due. A low sticker price can be poor value if deferred maintenance or an expensive repair erases the savings.
Are used luxury cars expensive to maintain?
They can be. Consumer Reports warns that a used luxury car may bring costly repairs after its warranty expires. A reliability designation is not a maintenance-cost estimate, and it does not remove the risk of a large repair bill. Before buying, get an independent inspection and ask a qualified shop to estimate any work it identifies; use those findings when deciding what the car is worth to you.

Consumer Reports’ used-luxury coverage also weighs comfort and performance and draws attention to practical drawbacks such as awkward controls or cramped interiors. A car that looks attractive on paper may not suit your daily use. Its comparison of a 2019 Audi A6 and a 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is an example of model-specific evaluation, not a blanket recommendation for either brand or all cars in those years. How to decide whether a specific listing is a good buy
- Confirm the exact model year. Check whether that year appears in Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability guide. Do not extend a designation to nearby years that are not listed.
- Compare local asking prices. Look at similar cars in your area with comparable years and mileage. A reliability listing does not tell you whether the seller’s price is competitive.
- Review the vehicle history and service records. Look for a consistent maintenance history and investigate gaps, accident history, or signs of neglected repairs.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Ask the inspector to document defects and likely near-term work. Obtain repair estimates rather than treating an inspection pass as a guarantee.
- Check fit and ownership costs. Test the controls, comfort, space, and features you will use, and budget for routine service and plausible out-of-warranty repairs.
- Recalculate the deal. Compare the asking price plus identified repairs with alternatives nearby. Walk away if the records, inspection, or price do not make the trade-off acceptable.
What brand-level reliability data can tell you
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study found premium vehicles less dependable than mass-market counterparts overall and reported that Lexus ranked highest among all brands for the fourth consecutive year. Consumer Reports likewise cautions, “Don’t choose a luxury car by the name and badge alone.” Its ratings draw on independent tests and reliability and owner-satisfaction surveys, but a brand reputation cannot establish the condition, history, or value of the car in front of you.
