What the 2009 study tested
The study, “Efficacy of combined local mechanical vibrations, continuous passive motion and thermotherapy in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee,” appeared in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, volume 17, issue 10, October 2009, pages 1269–1274. It was a controlled double-crossover study involving 71 people with knee osteoarthritis. The active intervention combined a Kineticure knee-brace system with local heat and vibration, plus continuous passive motion delivered using a foot pedal. Four-week treatment periods were compared with a sham device.
The journal abstract reports a net treatment effect of 14.4 ± 4.1 mm on the visual analog pain scale (P=0.001) and 8.8 ± 1.9 points on the WOMAC measure (P<0.001). These are reported results for the study’s Kineticure intervention and participants, not measured RejuvaKnee performance. The authors concluded that four weeks of combined continuous passive motion, vibration and local heating reduced pain and improved range of motion and quality of life in their study population. The U.S. National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases says exercise can reduce osteoarthritis pain and stiffness and improve flexibility, strength and endurance; heat and cold therapies can also reduce joint pain.
