This is a retrospective of The Verge’s August 26, 2025 roundup of 30 REI Labor Day sale picks—not a list of deals available now. The sale was reported as offering discounts of up to 30 percent, and many offers were due to expire September 1, 2025. Prices, stock, and promotions may have changed since then.
What the 2025 REI sale roundup covered
The picks combined outdoor and travel equipment with consumer electronics suited to trips outside. The Verge described the sale as an opportunity to browse across several practical categories; its product notes reflect the August 2025 article, not a current specification check.
- Satellite communication and navigation: Garmin inReach Mini 2 and Garmin inReach Messenger. The Mini 2 was described as a palm-sized satellite communicator for two-way messaging and navigation. Satellite service requires a subscription.
- Wearables: Garmin Venu 3S and Garmin Venu 3. The article reported battery life of up to 10 days for the 3S and up to 14 days for the Venu 3.
- Portable power: EcoFlow River 3 Plus, with maximum output reported as 600W, and InfinityLab InstantGo 5000 Power Bank.
- Cameras and audio: Insta360 X5, GoPro HERO13 Black Specialty Bundle, DJI Osmo Mobile 7, Shokz OpenRun Pro 2, Shokz OpenFit 2, Shokz OpenFit, and JBL Vibe Beam 2. The X5 was reported to record 8K footage at up to 30fps.
- Water, cooking, and camp essentials: LifeStraw Peak Series Straw, MSR TrailShot, Jetboil Stash, Hydro Flask Travel Tumbler and Food Jar, and Humangear Stax containers. The article described the LifeStraw as a backcountry water filter and the Jetboil as a compact stove-and-pot cooking system.
- Shelter, sleep, and seating: REI Co-op Half Dome 2 Tent, REI Flexlite Camp Chair, REI Magma 30 Down Trail Quilt, Exped MegaMat Duo, Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sol, and Kelty Low Loveseat. The Half Dome 2 was described as a two-person tent.
- Bags, lighting, and other gear: Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 70L, Sea to Summit Hanging Toiletry Bag, Mpowerd Luci Solar String Lights: Color, Petzl Tikka Headlamp, and Thousand Chapter MIPS Bike Helmet. The article reported the Tikka’s maximum output as 350 lumens.
Which offers and prices were reported—and what has expired?
The Verge’s August 26, 2025 article said REI discounts reached up to 30 percent and that many deals were set to end September 1, 2025. It also reported an extra 20 percent off one REI Outlet item for members using code LABORDAY2025. That coupon was part of the 2025 promotion and is expired; these figures should not be read as current REI offers.
The article listed Amazon as a retailer for several products, including the Garmin inReach Mini 2 and LifeStraw Peak Series Straw. That historical mention does not confirm current Amazon prices, product variants, or availability.

What to know before relying on the product details
The sale roundup is useful as a record of the kinds of gear featured, but its figures and product descriptions are dated to 2025. For example, the article reported Garmin inReach satellite service starting at $7.99 a month. Subscription plans and rates can change, so check Garmin’s current terms before choosing a satellite communicator.
Availability and sale pricing are separate questions from whether a product fits a trip. For satellite communicators, consider messaging and navigation needs as well as the recurring service requirement. For filters, match the device to the water source and treatment needs. For a tent or sleep system, account for capacity, packed size, insulation, and setup. For portable power, weigh output and charging needs against the unit’s capacity and portability. The 2025 roundup does not establish current winners or present-day prices.
