Regular vs. Direct Mutual Funds: Costs, Advice and Switching Risks

Regular and direct plans share a scheme’s portfolio but differ in expenses, support and investor responsibilities. Understand TER, advice and switching risks before deciding.

In India, regular and direct plans of the same mutual fund scheme hold the same portfolio and are managed by the same fund manager. The difference is how you invest: regular plans use a distributor and include distribution costs in a higher total expense ratio (TER); direct plans remove that distributor route, so you handle fund selection and transactions yourself or arrange separate paid advice. The lower TER is only one part of the decision—support, execution responsibilities and the costs or tax consequences of switching matter too.

What changes—and what stays the same

A regular plan and a direct plan are two plans of the same scheme, not two separately managed portfolios. The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) says they share the scheme portfolio and fund manager, but have different expense ratios and separate net asset values (NAVs). NAVs differ because each plan’s expenses differ.

The plan choice does not, by itself, change the scheme’s investment objective or holdings. But the investor experience can differ: how a fund is selected, whether help is available, and how consistently transactions and investment decisions are handled.

Compare the costs using the scheme’s current TER

TER, or total expense ratio, represents a scheme’s operating costs as a percentage of its average NAV. AMFI lists costs such as management, administration, sales and marketing, transactions, registrar, custody and audit. NAV is disclosed after expenses are deducted. Since the regular plan includes distributor-related costs and the direct plan removes that distribution route, the regular plan generally has the higher TER.

#1 Best Overall

There is no established market-wide figure for the typical current gap. Check the exact scheme and plan: AMFI says TERs are disclosed daily on AMC and AMFI websites. Expense limits and permitted allowances are subject to current rules, so do not assume a fixed percentage difference across schemes.

SEBI Investor illustrates the effect of expenses with a hypothetical ₹1,00,000 investment earning a hypothetical 10% annual return, using a 1.5% expense ratio for a regular-plan example and 0.5% for a direct-plan example. Those are illustration inputs, not current market averages or a return forecast.

What the regular-plan distributor may provide

With a regular plan, a distributor may help with fund selection, paperwork and transactions. The AMC pays distributor commission within applicable expense limits; the investor does not pay that commission directly as a separate bill, though the distribution cost is reflected in the plan’s expenses.

AMFI says half-yearly Consolidated Account Statements (CAS) for periods ending in March and September show actual AMC-paid distributor commissions against an investor’s investments in absolute terms. AMFI also lists transaction charges permitted in specified circumstances; these do not necessarily apply to every investor or distributor.

What direct investing puts on the investor

Choosing a direct plan means taking responsibility for researching and selecting schemes and carrying out transactions. A lower TER does not ensure a suitable fund choice, timely decisions or steady investing. If you would rather not make those decisions alone, direct investing can be paired with separately paid advice.

AMFI’s investor knowledge center says: “Thus, Direct Plan makes sense only if you have adequate knowledge and capability to select good funds yourself; or, are willing to seek professional advice of a registered investment adviser for a fee.” This is a general caution, not a recommendation for a particular plan or adviser.

How to get advice, and how its payment differs

SEBI describes investment advisers as registered professionals who provide advice tailored to financial goals and risk tolerance. Their fee-based compensation differs from a mutual fund distributor’s AMC-paid commission. These compensation categories do not, by themselves, establish whether a particular professional is suitable or conflicted.

Before hiring an adviser, confirm the person’s SEBI registration, what services are included, the complete fee schedule and any relevant conflicts. A direct plan’s lower scheme TER does not include the cost of separate advice.

Should you switch an existing regular holding to direct?

Do not treat a regular-to-direct switch as merely changing a label. SEBI-filed scheme disclosures warn that the switch may be handled as a redemption followed by a new purchase; an applicable exit load and capital-gains tax may arise. Whether either applies depends on the scheme’s current terms and your holding and tax circumstances. It is not correct to assume every switch triggers a charge or tax, or that none will.

  1. Check the scheme documents: Review the current Scheme Information Document for the relevant plan’s switch or redemption treatment, exit-load terms and any exceptions.
  2. Check your tax position: Confirm the possible capital-gains treatment for your specific holding with appropriate tax guidance before placing the transaction.
  3. Compare the whole decision: Weigh the future TER difference against any applicable switching costs and the value of distributor support or separately paid advice.
  4. Proceed only after verification: Confirm the current terms and transaction details with the AMC or the relevant service channel before submitting instructions.

Questions to ask before choosing a plan

  • Can I select and monitor suitable schemes and execute transactions without distributor support?
  • If I want personalized guidance, am I prepared to pay an adviser separately and verify their registration, fees and service scope?
  • What are the current regular- and direct-plan TERs for this exact scheme?
  • If I already hold the regular plan, what do the current scheme terms and my own tax circumstances mean for a possible switch?

For current plan-level TER disclosures, consult the AMFI expense-ratio guidance. For the roles of direct plans, distributors and advisers, see AMFI’s Direct Plan page and SEBI’s investment-adviser guidance.
