Search for the name, review the full checkout price and renewal terms, then connect the domain to a Bluehost site or configure its DNS for another store platform. Registration buys the address only; it does not create an online store or include hosting by default.
Is .shop a good domain for an online store?
.shop is a generic top-level domain that signals a shopping or commerce purpose. It can suit retailers, creators selling digital products, subscription businesses, service providers, dropshippers, and local businesses with an online storefront. It is not limited to a particular country.
Choose it when the extension makes your brand clearer or gives you a shorter, more memorable address than the alternatives. A .com may be preferable if customers already know your brand by that address, or if you expect to expand beyond commerce. Compare availability, memorability, trust, and cost—not an assumed search-ranking advantage. The extension alone does not guarantee better rankings or establish that a business is legitimate.
Before registering, check that the name is easy to spell and say aloud, look for matching business and social-media names, and investigate potential trademark conflicts. A name being available as a domain does not establish trademark rights. Decide whether Bluehost will host your store or whether you only need it to register the domain, and prepare a backup name or extension.

How much does a .shop domain cost at Bluehost?
Bluehost’s .shop page advertises a broad range of $2–$30 per year. That is not a guaranteed quote: price can depend on the specific name, a promotion, premium-name status, and account region. Check the selected domain’s checkout total and the renewal price in your Bluehost account before paying. Bluehost’s domain-pricing guidance says prices can change and directs customers to the account renewal center for current rates.
- Registration and renewal can differ. A low first-term price does not establish the price for later years. Check the renewal rate and the billing term shown in checkout.
- Premium names may cost more. A search result or promotion does not guarantee that a particular name qualifies for the advertised price.
- Do not assume .shop is free with hosting. Bluehost’s published free-domain eligibility list includes some extensions, including
.store, but does not list.shop. Verify the live offer and cart rather than relying on a hosting promotion. - Privacy and taxes need a checkout check. Bluehost’s registration guide says privacy is included in the registration flow, but availability can depend on registry restrictions. Confirm the privacy line item in your own cart. EU customers may have VAT added separately to advertised prices.
- Registration is not refundable after completion. Bluehost says a registered domain cannot be canceled for a refund, so verify the spelling, extension, registrant details, term, and total before submitting payment.
For budgeting, compare the amount due today with the renewal amount, any privacy or protection charges, taxes, and optional hosting or email add-ons. Do not treat the advertised range as the cost of running a store: hosting, ecommerce software, payment processing, email, and other services may be separate.
How to register a .shop domain with Bluehost
Register through the Bluehost website
- Open Bluehost’s For Business menu and select Domain Name Search.
- Enter the name with the
.shopextension and submit the search. - If the exact name is available, select Continue. Review whether it is a standard or premium registration and check the displayed price.
- Review the cart, including the billing term, privacy or protection options, and any add-ons.
- Create a Bluehost account or sign in. Enter accurate registrant contact information and billing details.
- Check the spelling and extension once more, then select Submit Payment.
- Follow the registration-verification request in the email Bluehost sends. Keep access to the registrant email address.
Register from an existing Bluehost account
- Sign in to the Bluehost Portal and select Domains from the left-hand menu.
- Choose Add a Domain, then select Get a brand new domain.
- Search for the name with
.shop, confirm availability, and complete checkout.
Bluehost also documents a route through Marketplace → Domains. Portal labels can vary for legacy accounts or different products. The current registration instructions are at Bluehost’s domain registration guide.
If a name is unavailable, Bluehost may suggest alternatives or offer a backorder option. A backorder is a request to try to acquire a domain if it becomes available; it is not immediate registration or a guarantee. If checkout fails after a name appeared available, recheck the spelling and premium status, then try an alternative. A search result is not proof that the registration has completed.
What registration does—and what to do next
Keep these functions separate when planning the store:
- Registration gives you management rights to the domain through a registrar, subject to the registration terms.
- Hosting provides the server or platform where a website runs.
- DNS records direct website, email, and other domain services to the systems that provide them.
- Connecting assigns the domain to a particular website or platform.
- Transferring moves registrar management from one registrar to another; it is not required just to use a domain with a different host.
After purchase, look for the order confirmation, a domain-management entry in the Portal, and any registration-verification email. Complete verification promptly, review auto-renewal and payment details, and decide how to connect the site and business email. A domain by itself does not provide a product catalog, checkout, payment processing, shipping, inventory management, hosting, or a store.
How to connect the domain to Bluehost hosting
If you buy a domain and hosting together, Bluehost may associate the new domain with the default site automatically. For other setups, use the connection controls in the Portal. Bluehost’s documented path is:
- Sign in to the Bluehost Portal and open Domains.
- Select the
.shopdomain. - In the Connections panel, find the website or hosting service and select Add.
- Choose the intended website or hosting plan and complete the connection.
The exact interface can vary with account type, hosting product, and whether the domain is new, external, or already attached to another site. See Bluehost’s domain-assignment instructions. After connecting, confirm that the intended site uses the domain as its primary address, that HTTPS is active, and that redirects do not conflict.

How to use a Bluehost .shop domain with Shopify or another platform
You can register the domain at Bluehost and use it with Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, or another compatible platform. Compatibility does not mean Bluehost configures the store automatically, and Bluehost hosting is not necessarily required for a store hosted elsewhere.
- Create the store with the ecommerce provider and add your custom domain in that provider’s domain settings.
- Copy the exact DNS instructions supplied for your account by the platform.
- In Bluehost’s DNS management, add or update the specified records, or change nameservers only if the platform directs you to do so.
- Verify the domain in the ecommerce platform and allow time for DNS changes to take effect.
- Confirm HTTPS, the preferred canonical domain, redirects, and any required email records.
Before changing nameservers, record your existing DNS entries. A nameserver change can affect MX records for incoming email, SPF and DKIM authentication, DMARC policy, and verification records used by Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, payment services, or marketing tools. If your email provider uses Bluehost DNS, preserve the required records; if it manages DNS elsewhere, follow that provider’s instructions. Do not delete email records simply because the website is moving.
Bluehost estimates that nameserver changes may take about 24–48 hours to propagate, though changes can appear sooner and DNS resolvers may cache records for different periods. This is a typical window, not a guarantee. Its guidance on connecting domains is available at Bluehost’s domain-assignment page.
Should you connect an existing domain or transfer it to Bluehost?
If your .shop domain is registered elsewhere, you can connect it to Bluehost hosting without moving registrar management. In the Portal, go to Domains → Add a Domain → Connect an external domain, enter the domain, and add it. Select it, use Add in the Website card under Connections, then choose the hosting plan and connect it. You may need to point nameservers to Bluehost or configure specific DNS records. The external-domain setup is documented at Bluehost’s external-domain connection guide.

Choose a transfer only if you want Bluehost to manage the registration as well as hosting. Transfers generally require an eligible, unlocked domain and an authorization or EPP code from the current registrar. Privacy or other transfer restrictions may need to be disabled temporarily, and a newly registered domain may be subject to a 60-day transfer restriction. Bluehost says transfers typically take 5–7 days, but locks, verification, and registry conditions can affect timing. Its transfer pricing generally includes a one-year renewal; check the specific .shop price and conditions at Bluehost’s transfer page.
Connecting without transferring is often the simpler option if the current registrar has favorable renewal pricing, the domain is in a transfer-lock period, or you want to avoid disturbing a domain already used for email. Transfer may make sense if you want one account for domain and hosting and the transfer cost and future renewal terms are competitive. In either case, preserve the current DNS and email configuration before making changes.

|---|---|---|
| Bluehost domain registration | Domain and Bluehost hosting can be managed in one account, and a new domain may connect conveniently to a Bluehost site. | Specific registration and renewal prices, premium status, privacy, taxes, and checkout add-ons. |
| Bluehost domain with Shopify or another hosted store | You can retain the domain at Bluehost while using another platform’s storefront. | Whether Bluehost hosting is needed at all, and whether DNS and email records are configured correctly. |
| Separate registrar | May suit buyers prioritizing domain-only management, registrar independence, or a different renewal and privacy offer. | Renewal terms for the exact domain, privacy eligibility, DNS controls, and the extra setup across providers. |
Keeping registrar and host separate can make a later hosting change more independent, but it means managing more than one account and dividing support between providers. For a WordPress store, Bluehost also promotes WooCommerce hosting; plan contents and pricing are product-specific, so check the current offer at Bluehost’s WooCommerce page. A buyer comparing domain-only options can check another registrar’s current terms directly, such as Namecheap’s .shop registration page; promotional and renewal pricing can change.
Common .shop setup problems and fixes
The name looked available, but checkout will not complete
Another customer may have registered it first, the name may be premium or restricted, or the price may have changed between search and checkout. Recheck the spelling and price, try the standard ASCII spelling if relevant, and choose a backup if needed. Do not treat a search result as a completed registration.

The domain is registered, but the website does not load
Check that the domain is active and verified, connected to the correct site, and using the required nameservers or DNS records. Then confirm the site’s primary domain, allow for propagation, and check SSL and redirects. Bluehost lists incorrect nameservers, DNS propagation, domain conflicts, and pending transfers among possible connection problems in its domain-assignment guidance.
Email stopped working after a DNS change
The website may be working while email records were removed or replaced. Restore the email provider’s required MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records, confirm whether the provider expects nameserver delegation or individual records, and test both sending and receiving.
The domain was registered with the wrong spelling
Bluehost says a registered domain cannot be edited. The practical remedy is to register the correct spelling separately, if it is available, and decide whether to keep or let the original registration expire. Check the new name and price before buying.
The domain expired or auto-renewal failed
An expired domain can stop serving the site and email. Bluehost says it may hold an expired domain for up to 30 days as a courtesy before it may enter redemption; its cited pricing guidance lists a $99 redemption fee. These policies and costs can vary by extension and agreement, so check the renewal center for the current deadline and fee. Keep payment details current, enable renewal reminders, and retain access to the registrant email. See Bluehost’s domain-pricing and renewal guidance.
