Its ambition of 50,000 satellites by 2035 is a company target, not a fleet in orbit today; the first satellite is described in 2026 reports as a demonstration mission. Whether the idea can deliver useful light or electricity at a reasonable cost remains unproven.
How would a company sell sunlight at night?
A mirror in low Earth orbit could catch sunlight and reflect it toward a moving patch on Earth’s night side. A customer might pay to illuminate a chosen location, such as a solar farm. The satellite’s orbit carries it across the sky, so the reflected light would move too; a particular site would receive a pass, not a permanent second sun.
Reflect Orbital has discussed uses including extra light for solar farms, outdoor lighting, agriculture and emergency response. These are proposed applications, not demonstrated results: reporting available in 2026 does not establish commercial power generation, increased crop yields or emergency-service performance.
What do 50,000 mirrors mean in practice?
Nature reported on 17 July 2026, with a clarification on 18 July, that Reflect Orbital aims to have 50,000 satellites by 2035. That is a stated future ambition, not the number currently operating. The company has described its goal as achieving “full noon” brightness at selected locations; that is an aspiration, not a measured outcome.

One mirror would illuminate a limited area
ABC News reported on 19 July 2026 that a proposed 18-metre mirror would produce limited illumination compared with daylight, across a patch roughly five kilometres wide. A separate preprint by Kocifaj, Bakos and Kundracik, posted on arXiv on 6 August 2026, modeled a proposed 18 × 18-metre pilot mirror at about 600 kilometres altitude and an illuminated patch with a radius of about 2.5 kilometres. The patch descriptions are broadly comparable in scale, but they come from different accounts and modeling assumptions; neither is a field measurement of an operating service.
More brightness requires much larger mirrors or many satellites
For a sense of scale, ABC News reported contextual illumination levels of 0.3 lux for moonlight, 500 lux for office lighting and 100,000 lux for midday sunlight. Those comparisons help explain why a bright spot on the ground is not the same as making night into day.

ABC attributed to Monash University astronomer Michael Brown an estimate that 3,000 satellites, each carrying a 54-metre mirror, could produce 20% of midday illumination. That is an expert estimate, not a verified operating result; the 54-metre mirrors are also modeled proposal parameters, not demonstrated hardware performance. Reflect Orbital’s 50,000-satellite ambition should not be read as a promise that each location would receive daylight-level illumination continuously.
Low orbit helps brightness but limits time over a target
In ABC’s account, keeping the orbit relatively low helps keep the reflected spot bright, but satellites move quickly relative to a ground location. Brown estimated that a pass over a given location could last up to 3.5 minutes. How much useful light a customer could receive would therefore depend not just on fleet size, but also on mirror area, orbit, the target’s location and how often satellites pass over it.

Could reflected sunlight generate electricity economically?
Lighting a solar farm at night is not the same as proving that the arrangement can produce affordable electricity. The proposal has to deliver enough useful light to a panel, for long enough and at a cost that makes sense compared with other ways to provide power. The sources available in 2026 do not establish commercial customer results or a complete, independently validated cost model.
Brown estimated to ABC News that an hour of daylight at one location could cost US$10–20 million under the proposed pricing assumptions. This is an expert estimate, not a price quoted by Reflect Orbital or a definitive cost study. ABC’s account also contrasts the proposed service with grid battery storage. The comparison highlights the economic hurdle; it does not establish the cost of a specific battery alternative.

For a buyer, the important unanswered question is therefore not simply how many mirrors could be launched. It is how much reliable, usable illumination a service could deliver per dollar after accounting for launch, satellite construction and operation. The available reporting does not settle that question.

Bright reflected light could affect astronomy and nighttime conditions for people and wildlife. Nature’s July 2026 report describes astronomers’ concerns about telescope impacts. The National’s 11 August 2026 report, updated 13 August, summarizes a petition by environmental and conservation groups raising concerns about nighttime environments and potential human and wildlife effects. These are concerns about possible impacts, not proof of population-level harm from an operating constellation.

The 6 August 2026 arXiv preprint by Kocifaj, Bakos and Kundracik modeled atmospheric light pollution under specified assumptions. In its scenarios, effects extended roughly 30 kilometres for one satellite; in a modeled 400-mirror, same-patch scenario, the glow was obvious from 80 kilometres. The modeled results depend on atmospheric and ground-albedo assumptions. They are simulations, not observations of a deployed 50,000-mirror fleet, and should not be treated as measured outcomes.
Has Reflect Orbital been authorized to launch the full fleet?
ABC News in July 2026 and The National in August 2026 reported that the US Federal Communications Commission approved or licensed the first demonstration satellite. Reflect Orbital described the licence as a first step toward testing the technology’s efficacy and safeguards. The reported milestone concerns a demonstration satellite; it does not establish authorization for a 50,000-satellite constellation. The exact scope and conditions of the reported authorization are not established by those accounts.
Has anything like this been tried before?
ABC News reports that Russia deployed the 20-metre-wide Znamya 2 reflector in 1992. It reflected a spot of light across Europe, and the project was soon abandoned. That history shows that orbital reflection has been attempted; it does not demonstrate that Reflect Orbital’s proposed service is commercially viable or that its proposed scale would work as intended.
