The Associated Press described the penalty as nearly $20 million, or about $19.5 million; the legal penalty is denominated in pounds. The ICO says Reddit appealed the fine on 1 April 2026, and the sources available here do not establish the appeal’s outcome.
How much was Reddit fined?
The ICO’s enforcement record lists a penalty of £14,472,500. The Associated Press’s approximate conversion—about $19.5 million—accounts for the rounded $20 million figure in the headline. The dollar amount is a conversion, not the currency in which the regulator imposed the penalty.

Why did the ICO fine Reddit?
The regulator’s case focused on age assurance and the protection of children’s personal data. The ICO said Reddit did not have robust age assurance and therefore lacked a lawful basis to process personal information belonging to children under 13. It also said Reddit had not carried out a data protection impact assessment to assess and mitigate risks to children before January 2025.
The ICO’s enforcement record identifies UK GDPR Articles 5(1)(a), 6, 8 and 35. That list describes the regulator’s stated legal basis for enforcement; it should not be confused with a separate ruling on the outcome of Reddit’s appeal.
The concern was not limited to age checks in isolation. The ICO said the shortcomings meant children’s information was processed unlawfully and could leave them exposed to inappropriate or harmful content. This was a data-protection enforcement action, not a fine described in the cited sources as imposed solely for content moderation or solely under the Online Safety Act.
What did the ICO and Reddit say?
UK Information Commissioner John Edwards said: “Children under 13 had their personal information collected and used in ways they could not understand, consent to or control.”

Reddit disputed the regulator’s position. The company said: “The ICO’s insistence that we collect more private information on every UK user is counterintuitive and at odds with our strong belief in our users’ online privacy and safety.” These are the parties’ attributed positions, not findings about the appeal’s merits.
Is Reddit appealing the fine?
