Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, Redbox’s parent company, reportedly missed a $4 million payment to NBCUniversal. A separate reported figure—$16.7 million—was the amount a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ordered the company to pay, not the missed installment. Bankruptcy filings later documented broader cash and debt pressures, though they do not independently establish that those pressures caused the missed payment.

The corporate distinction matters: the report names Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, Redbox’s parent, as the company that missed the payment. It does not describe a payment by Redbox Automated Retail as a separate entity.
What the bankruptcy filings show about financial pressure
Management described difficulty financing operations
In a declaration filed June 29, 2024, chairman William J. Rouhana Jr. described an unsuccessful effort to obtain up to $40 million in working-capital financing. According to the debtors’ account, a loan facility was offered but was not approved by the prepetition agent. The declaration says that without the financing, the companies had difficulty securing new content, could not pay for all movies offered by providers, and lacked sufficient cash flow and working capital to operate efficiently. These are management’s statements in a bankruptcy filing, not an independent judicial finding about the causes of insolvency. June 29, 2024 declaration

The petition reported substantially more debt than assets
The Chapter 11 petition attachment reported consolidated assets of $414,075,844 and consolidated debts of $970,002,065 as of March 31, 2024. The filing says the figures were based on the company’s Form 10-Q filed May 20, 2024. They are group-wide consolidated figures for Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, not a Redbox-only balance sheet. Chapter 11 petition attachment
A separate creditor alleged an overdue film obligation
In another bankruptcy motion, distributor Bungalow stated that Redbox Entertainment owed a $500,000 minimum guarantee for the film The Bell Keeper as of June 29, 2024. This was a separate obligation from the reported NBCUniversal payment, and the amount is an allegation made by a creditor in its motion. The motion also said Redbox was no longer operating and that the film was no longer being distributed. Bungalow’s bankruptcy motion
