The company wants its battery information to become a common way to compare used EVs; that remains an ambition, not evidence of an industry-wide standard.
What Recurrent does for used-EV shoppers
Recurrent provides analytics and reports intended to make a used EV’s battery performance and real-world range easier to understand. Its premise is practical: mileage alone does not tell a buyer how a particular vehicle’s battery performs. The company launched in 2020 as a Pioneer Square Labs spinout, founded by Scott Case and Kyle Rippey, with a battery-condition report as its first product. Axios reported on the launch, and Recurrent described its origins in its launch post.
Recurrent’s reports draw on driver data and analytics rather than relying only on a vehicle’s odometer reading. GeekWire reported in January 2024 that Recurrent scores appeared on Edmunds and Cars.com, helping put battery information in places where shoppers encounter listings. That is a distribution channel for Recurrent’s information, not proof that every used-EV listing or marketplace uses it. GeekWire’s funding report gives the dated details.
What the $16 million Series A means
ArcTern Ventures led the $16 million Series A announced in January 2024. Automotive Ventures, Goodyear Ventures, Wireframe Ventures, Pioneer Square Labs and others also participated. GeekWire reported that the round brought Recurrent’s cumulative funding to $19 million at that time. That $19 million is a historical figure, not a current total: Recurrent’s press page now rounds its venture funding to roughly $20 million, a company-presented figure. Recurrent’s press page does not provide an independently reconciled financing history.

The company said the Series A would help scale its used-EV battery reports. For shoppers and sellers, the relevant question is whether more vehicles and more places to see the information make battery performance easier to assess—not whether the funding itself establishes a new technical standard.
Why Recurrent wants battery scores to become a “common currency”
“The auto industry needs a common currency for understanding and comparing used EV batteries, like the odometer was for used combustion vehicles,” Scott Case, Recurrent’s co-founder and CEO, told GeekWire in its January 8, 2024 report. The analogy captures the company’s goal: a recognizable, comparable signal that could help buyers, sellers and businesses discuss battery performance.

But “aims to be standard” describes that goal, not an established market fact. The available sources do not show that Recurrent’s score is a regulated test, a physical battery inspection, a warranty determination or a universal measure adopted across the auto industry. A report can make vehicle information more legible without replacing a mechanic’s inspection or answering every question about a particular battery.
How Recurrent says its business works
In its current media brief, Recurrent says individual drivers receive free insights about range and vehicle performance, while dealerships and wholesale auctions pay for bulk reports. The company also says driver insights and shopper information appear through dealer and shopping sites. It describes aggregating individual vehicle data to train its models and outlines a privacy approach; these are Recurrent’s descriptions of its own service and data handling. GeekWire reported more than 100 paying dealerships in January 2024, alongside customers such as online sales sites and vehicle auction houses. It also reported about 25,000 participating EV drivers, roughly one million miles driven daily, and coverage spanning 65 makes and models at the time. These are dated snapshots from the 2024 report, not current counts.
What Recurrent’s newer data milestone says—and does not say
In a January 2026 retrospective, Recurrent said its dataset had grown to more than 50,000 vehicles and over one billion miles of real-world driving and charging data. Those are company-reported cumulative figures in its five-year data retrospective, not independently audited metrics in the cited sources.

The 2026 cumulative mileage figure is not directly comparable to GeekWire’s 2024 report of about one million miles driven daily: the figures describe different periods and measures. The 2024 article also described coverage across 65 makes and models, whereas the 2026 retrospective describes a cumulative vehicle and mileage dataset. Neither milestone, on its own, proves the accuracy of a specific score or broad adoption of a shared industry standard.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a used-EV buyer should take from this
Recurrent is trying to address a real information gap in used-EV shopping: how much battery performance and range a vehicle may have in real-world use. Its reports and marketplace placements may add useful context, but a score should be read as one source of information rather than a complete vehicle diagnosis. The sources describe Recurrent’s analytics and data model; they do not establish that its reports detect every physical battery fault or determine warranty coverage.
