Recommended Virtual Currency: How to Choose Without a Universal “Best”

No virtual currency is right for every buyer. Understand the difference between direct crypto ownership and exchange-traded exposure, then weigh custody, costs, market risk, and your circumstances.

There is no single virtual currency that can be recommended for every buyer. For this guide, “virtual currency” means crypto assets—not every digital payment balance or game token. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes Bitcoin and Ether as highly speculative investments whose prices can fluctuate widely. Which, if any, is appropriate depends on your goals, risk tolerance, jurisdiction, and how you plan to hold it.

What “virtual currency” means here

The term can cover different things. The SEC’s investor education material defines virtual currency as a digital representation of value that can be digitally traded and functions as a medium of exchange, unit of account, or store of value. Some tokens may represent other rights and, in certain cases, may be securities. See the SEC’s Investor Bulletin: Initial Coin Offerings.

Legal definitions can also be narrower and depend on jurisdiction. For example, Minnesota’s 2023 law excludes certain publisher-issued value used solely in online games from its definition. That illustrates why “virtual currency” does not automatically mean cryptocurrency in every legal or commercial context; see Chapter 57 – Minnesota Laws 2023.

Why there is no universal best cryptocurrency to buy

The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy said in its September 9, 2024 bulletin: “Investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative investments.” The bulletin also notes that crypto assets differ in their characteristics, design, and risks. It does not establish that either asset is suitable for a particular investor, and the title alone cannot determine a choice for your finances or location.

There is no current price, return comparison, or investor-specific suitability analysis established here. A past rise or fall would not settle which asset is right for you. Treat the decision as a question of risk and exposure structure, not as a search for a guaranteed winner.

Choose how you want exposure before choosing a route

For Bitcoin or Ether exposure in the United States, the broad routes covered by the SEC are direct ownership and exchange-traded products (ETPs). These are not interchangeable: they differ in custody, structure, costs, and how closely the investment may track the crypto asset.

Route What you hold or get exposure to Custody and access Costs and tracking
Direct ownership The crypto asset itself. You may control the private keys yourself or rely on a platform or custodian. How you access the asset depends on that arrangement. No ETP sponsor fee applies to direct ownership, but platform and other transaction costs may apply; costs vary by provider and are not stated in the SEC bulletin.
Spot Bitcoin or Ether ETP The SEC describes these products as holding the underlying crypto asset. The product’s structure may avoid some direct wallet and trading-platform risks for investors, but it has other risks and does not eliminate crypto-market risk. Sponsor fees apply, and the share price can differ from the underlying asset’s price.
Futures-based Bitcoin or Ether ETP Exposure through futures contracts rather than direct ownership of the underlying crypto asset. You hold shares in the product rather than managing the underlying asset’s private keys. Sponsor fees apply; the product’s performance may not match the spot asset’s price because exposure comes through futures contracts.

The structure and risk distinctions in this table are described in the SEC’s Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs) Providing Exposure to Bitcoin and Ether – Investor Bulletin, dated September 9, 2024. Exact fees and product-specific tracking results depend on the ETP and are not stated in that general bulletin.

What to check before choosing an ETP

“ETF” is often used casually for crypto exchange-traded products, but the SEC explains that spot Bitcoin and Ether ETPs are commodity trusts, not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Their offerings and securities register under the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. Do not assume that an ETP has the same legal structure or protections as a conventional registered investment company merely because it trades on an exchange.

  • Read the product’s disclosures for its actual holdings or futures exposure, fees, custody arrangements, and stated risks.
  • Check how closely the share price and returns may track the underlying crypto asset; tracking differences can occur.
  • Consider exposure to fraud or manipulation in the underlying crypto markets, as well as the possibility of substantial price declines.
  • Confirm that the product is available to you and understand the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.

If you hold crypto directly, understand the custody risk

A crypto wallet does not contain the coins themselves. In its December 12, 2025 custody bulletin, the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance explains: “Crypto wallets do not store crypto assets themselves; instead, they store the ‘private keys’ or passcodes for your crypto assets.” Those keys enable access to the assets.

Direct ownership therefore involves a custody decision: you may rely on a third-party platform or custodian, or take responsibility for controlling keys yourself. Neither approach removes risk. The SEC advises investors to research custodians, protect seed phrases, watch for phishing, and use strong passwords and multifactor authentication. A hardware wallet is one optional custody tool, not a guarantee of safety or a universally suitable choice. See Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors – Investor Bulletin.

Separate price risk from fraud and custody risk

These risks can overlap, but they are not the same. The crypto asset’s market price can fall sharply; a trading platform or other intermediary can fail or be compromised; and a scam or stolen key can lead to loss of access. The SEC’s May 7, 2014 alert discusses volatility, fraud schemes, and the absence of bank-like deposit insurance for Bitcoin held in wallets or exchanges. It is useful as historical risk context, not as a current market snapshot. The alert also warns that recovering funds after fraud or theft may be limited: Investor Alert: Bitcoin and Other Virtual Currency-Related Investments.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Define the exposure. Decide whether you mean a crypto asset such as Bitcoin or Ether, another kind of token, or an exchange-traded product. Do not treat game-only balances or every digital token as the same category.
  2. Decide whether crypto risk fits your finances. Consider whether you can tolerate a substantial loss and whether the exposure aligns with your own circumstances. The SEC’s warnings are educational guidance, not a personalized recommendation.
  3. Choose a holding route. Compare direct ownership, spot ETPs, and futures-based ETPs by what they hold, who controls access, applicable fees, and potential tracking differences.
  4. Verify the legal and product details where you live. The cited SEC materials address U.S. products and investor risks. Definitions, availability, and legal protections can differ elsewhere.
  5. Secure access if holding directly. Research any custodian, safeguard keys and seed phrases, avoid phishing, and use strong passwords and multifactor authentication.
