Re:

Received an email in my spam box, I think this is a scam but curiosity is biting me

A spam-folder warning is not proof, but an unexpected email asking for money, passwords, or urgent action should be handled as phishing. Here is how to verify it without clicking.

If an unexpected message is already in your spam folder, the safest assumption is that it is not worth investigating inside the email. Do not click a link, open an attachment, scan a QR code, reply, call the number shown, or use the message’s unsubscribe button.

Spam filtering is useful evidence, but it is not conclusive: legitimate emails sometimes get misclassified, and phishing emails sometimes reach the inbox. The safer test is independent verification. If the email claims there is a problem with your bank account, card, delivery, subscription, or payment, open the company’s official app or type its known web address yourself.

What to do with a suspicious email in spam

  1. Leave the email alone. Do not interact with links, buttons, images, attachments, invitations, or QR codes.
  2. Report it as phishing or junk using your email provider’s reporting control.
  3. Delete it. There is rarely a financial benefit to studying a suspicious message, while a single click can expose your account or device.

Replying can confirm that your address is active. An unsubscribe link may be controlled by the scammer rather than by a legitimate mailing list. A phone number in the message can connect you to someone pretending to be your bank, retailer, or payment provider.

Does the spam folder prove it is a scam?

No. Filtering systems make predictions based on factors such as the sender, content, links, reputation, and authentication. They can make mistakes in either direction.

CloudValley Laptop Camera Cover Slide, Metal 0.023 Inch Ultra-Thin, 2 Packs
  • Privacy Protection: CloudValley webcam cover is designed for those who prioritize privacy, security, and peace of mind when using laptops, tablets, and computers
  • Fashion Design: The space aluminum alloy webcam cover features a subtle design which compliments the beautiful aesthetic of top devices
  • Ultra-Thin Design: Measures only 0.023 (0.6 mm) inch thin, ensuring it does not interfere with closing your laptop or device while providing reliable camera coverage
  • Broad Compatibility: Works flawlessly with most laptops (MacBook, HP, Dell, Asus, Acer, Lenovo), All-in-One PCs and leading tablets including iPad, Surface Pro, Galaxy Tab, Fire HD, and Google Pixel Tablet
  • Simple to Use: Only need to align to the webcam, attach and press it firmly for 15 seconds. Does not interfere with web use or indicator light

Nevertheless, an unsolicited message in spam deserves maximum caution when it asks you to:

  • sign in or confirm a password
  • provide a one-time code, Social Security number, card number, or bank details
  • pay an invoice or “secure” an account
  • open a document or enable macros
  • resolve a suspicious-login, delivery, refund, or billing problem urgently

The Federal Trade Commission warns that phishing emails often impersonate banks, utilities, retailers, payment services, and other familiar organizations. Their goal is usually to steal credentials, payment information, or identity details.

How to check whether the claimed problem is real

Do not use the email as your route to verification. Instead:

  1. Open a new browser window or the organization’s official mobile app.
  2. Type the website address yourself, use a bookmark you created previously, or find the address through a trusted statement or card.
  3. Sign in there, without using any password or link from the email.
  4. Check your account notifications, messages, orders, and transactions.
  5. If necessary, call the number printed on your card, bill, or official statement.

For example, if a message says your debit card was locked, do not click “Restore access.” Open your bank’s app or call the number on the back of the card. If there is no matching alert in the real account, the email becomes easier to classify without exposing yourself to its contents.

If curiosity makes you inspect the message

Reading the visible subject and text is less risky than clicking or downloading, but it is not risk-free. Some emails contain tracking images that can tell the sender that the message was opened. Avoid all active content, including:

  • links and “view document” buttons
  • QR codes and calendar invitations
  • PDF, Word, ZIP, disk-image, and other attachments
  • image-loading prompts
  • reply, reaction, and unsubscribe controls

You can reduce external-image exposure in Gmail by going to Settings → See all settings → General → Images → Ask before displaying external images → Save Changes. Gmail proxies and scans images, but Google notes that senders may still sometimes learn whether an image-containing email was opened.

Inspect the real sender, not just the display name

A display name such as “Your Bank” is easy to fake. The useful detail is the actual address and sending domain. A message from [email protected] is different from one sent by a lookalike domain, a random mailbox, or a domain with an extra word or altered spelling.

Gmail

  1. Open the message without clicking anything inside it.
  2. Under the sender’s name, click the Down arrow.
  3. Review Mailed by and Signed by.
  4. Treat a question mark beside the sender as a warning that Gmail could not authenticate it.

Authentication is evidence, not a safety certificate. Legitimate mailing lists and forwarded messages can sometimes fail authentication, and a compromised legitimate account can send malicious mail.

Outlook

Outlook may display a question mark when it cannot verify the sender or a via tag when the actual sending domain differs from the visible From address. Those indicators call for caution, but Microsoft says they do not automatically establish that the message is malicious.

How to report it

Gmail on a computer

  • From the message list, select the email and click Report spam.
  • With the message open, choose More → Report phishing when that option is available.

Gmail says messages reported as spam are moved to Spam and automatically deleted after 30 days.

Outlook.com or new Outlook

  1. Select the email.
  2. Above the reading pane, select Report.
  3. Select Report phishing.

Reporting does not necessarily block the sender. Blocking is handled separately through Outlook’s blocked-senders settings.

Outlook mobile

  1. Select the email.
  2. Tap ⋮ at the top right.
  3. Choose Report Junk.
  4. Select Junk, Phishing, or Block Sender.

For a phishing message, the FTC also recommends forwarding it to [email protected] and reporting it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Warning signs that matter financially

Be particularly suspicious of messages that:

  • threaten account closure or demand immediate action
  • claim there was a suspicious login, unpaid invoice, refund, delivery issue, or failed payment
  • ask you to update payment information through a link
  • use a near-match domain or generic greeting
  • contain unusual grammar or formatting
  • request gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment-app transfers
  • send a document that asks for your email password or a one-time code

Urgency is a manipulation tactic. A genuine bank may contact you about an account, but you can still verify the issue through a trusted channel instead of following the email’s instructions.

If you already clicked

If you clicked a link but did not submit information, close the page. Do not download a file, approve browser notifications, or install anything it requests. Update your device’s security software and run a security scan.

If you opened an attachment that may have installed malware, disconnect from anything unnecessary, update your security software, run a scan, and remove anything it identifies. If the device behaves unusually afterward—such as showing pop-ups, new extensions, or unfamiliar login prompts—avoid using it for banking until it has been checked.

FAQ

Can I safely open a scam email just to see what it says?

You can usually read the visible text, but it is safer not to. Opening may load tracking images, and the message may contain links, attachments, or other active content. If you inspect it, do not click, download, reply, scan, or enter any information.

Should I click unsubscribe on an email in spam?

No. If you suspect fraud, the unsubscribe link is still controlled by the sender and can confirm that your address is active or lead to a malicious site. Report the message as spam or phishing instead.

How can I tell whether an email really came from my bank?

Do not rely on the display name. Check the actual sender address and authentication details if needed, but verify the claimed issue by opening your bank’s official app, typing its known website yourself, or calling the number on your card or statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I gave a scammer my bank or card information?

Contact the bank or card issuer immediately through a trusted number, monitor and dispute unauthorized transactions, change any exposed or reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and use IdentityTheft.gov if sensitive identity information was disclosed.

The Bottom Line

If an email is unexpected, sits in spam, and asks you to sign in, pay, confirm details, or act urgently, curiosity is not a good reason to interact with it. Report it, delete it, and verify any claimed account problem through the organization’s official app, website, card, or statement.
