A check for more than $800 bearing the name “Vona S. Robinson” is not authenticated by the name or amount alone. The name appears in a reproduced Treasury form, but no cited official source connects that form or its signer to your specific check. Before spending or returning any money, ask your bank to examine the check and verify the payment independently with the U.S. Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service.
Does “Vona S. Robinson” prove the check is genuine?
No. A 2023 document from the Inmate Tax Assistance Project reproduces a Treasury form with a signature block reading “VONA S ROBINSON, Director, Regional Financial Center.” That is limited evidence that the name appeared on the reproduced form; it does not establish who issued your check, whether it is authentic, or why you received it. View the reproduced form.
The check’s amount and any accompanying explanation also cannot authenticate it. The check image, check number, payment date, issuing office, and reason for payment are needed to investigate this particular item. Only your bank and the relevant government payment office can help verify it.
Why you should not spend or return the money yet
A check can look legitimate and still be fake. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that fake checks may resemble personal or business checks, cashier’s checks, or money orders and may use the names of real institutions. A bank may make funds available before it discovers a problem; that availability does not mean the check has finally cleared. If it is later rejected as fake, you may have to repay the bank. The FTC’s guidance on fake-check scams says detection can take weeks.

- Compact print pad contains a special inking solution that wipes away clean.
- Inkless thumbprint pads are an easy and inexpensive way to provide extra security and to prevent check and identity fraud.
- Includes: 3 Pads in Black Ink
- Adhesive sticker on bottom of the pad - stick it to your desk, or any smooth, clean surface
- 1-1/2-in. diameter (each)
Be especially cautious if anyone sent the check unexpectedly and asks you to refund part of it, pay a tax or fee, or transfer money. A check for more than the supposed amount owed followed by a request to send some back is a known fake-check scam pattern. Do not send proceeds through gift cards, money orders, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers at someone else’s request. These methods can be difficult or impossible to reverse.
How to verify the check safely
- Contact your bank through a number you find independently. Use the number on your bank’s official website, your bank card, or a statement—not a number supplied in an unexpected letter, email, text, or phone call. Ask for the fraud or check department and explain that you want the specific Treasury check reviewed. Ask whether any credit is provisional, whether a hold applies, and what to do with the paper check. An available balance is not proof the item is genuine.
- Contact the Bureau of the Fiscal Service. For questions about government checks or direct deposits, call Federal Disbursement Services / Modernization, Innovation, and Payment Resolution at 855-868-0151. Confirm the number on the Bureau of the Fiscal Service Contact Us page.
- Check whether an offset affected a federal payment, if relevant. Call the Treasury Offset Program’s automated line at 800-304-3107. It can identify the amount, date, and creditor agency for an offset. Questions about the underlying debt must go to the responsible agency, which maintains the records and makes decisions about the debt. The Fiscal Service contact page provides the offset number and the Bureau’s contact information.
- Keep the check and related records while you verify it. Save the envelope, letter, emails, texts, and any sender details. If your bank considers the check suspicious, follow its instructions for the paper item.
What to do if you already sent money
Act immediately and contact the company or service used to send the money. If you paid with a gift card, contact the gift-card company and ask whether the funds can be recovered. If you wired money, call the wire service and ask whether it can reverse the transfer. Recovery is not guaranteed, but speed may matter. The FTC also lists the FTC, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and your state Attorney General as reporting options for suspected fake-check scams. See its fake-check scam guidance for reporting information.
